I'm surprised by some of the reviews on here. The rebuilt Chieftan is surgically devoid of atmosphere, despite the comfy furniture and reasonably priced, adequate food. Drinks are more expensive than a lot of other pubs locally but this is offset by the 2 for 1 offer on food if you're eating there. Apart from that there's not much to recommend it for. It's basically a one-box chain pub, with (unusually) upstairs toilets which can be a bit of a challenge when you've had a couple of pints. No pool table. No dartboard. No jukebox. 1 fruit machine. And a load of fixtures & fittings from a 'pub warehouse' (old books on shelves, many cliche'd pictures, cosmetic fireplaces, unmatched 'retro' light fittings)

Only been here once but the food was nice, the bar staff were friendly and the meals are very reasonably priced. Clean and tidy.......

I wasn't in WGC when the 'old' Chieftain was standing. The new version is decent tho'. Beer seems OK, nice enough decor, albeit fairly standard for chain pubs nowadays, and staff were polite.
If this was in an area with a reasonable choice of boozers, you may walk past it, but in WGC, where a good pub is rare occurence, it's a welcome addition.

Interesting history! Its over the road from a really crappy hotel and its very unusual in these days of pubs closing down every week to see a new build. We popped over for a meal. Very busy (good sign), choice of four real ales (good sign), nothing on the menu over a tenners (uhmmm.). The food is shipped in on the back of a truck, which is a shame, the service was good and it was very neat. Hurrah for a new pub.

The new Chieftain is now open! and nothing like the old the old boozer, it`s now a one bar pub nicely decked out with stainless steel bar top, comfy sofa`s and funky wall paper, ( no sign of skid row ) I knew this Pub when it was a 4 bar welwyn garden city landmark, and the various migrant families that gave the place its unique character. But that was then, and this is now! as for the beer it sells that has remained basically the same, McMullens standards and all the various lagers, the place even sells espresso coffee (Shock Horror) the menu looks pretty good currently doing a 2 for 1 deal. All in all, i really like the new look Chieftain, with a better management team the place will be a great addition to a town that lacks decent Pubs. Viva La Chieftain.

Re-opens 28th February 2011.

What can i say, possibly the greatest pub ever. It was burn't down and has now been rebuilt. Used to have a reputation of a rough pub but i think its just posh snobs that say that. Either that or you went in mouthing off. Hopefully the new pub hasn't lost its magic!

Apparently it's opening again soon...

Hello, hello, is anybody there? This pub burnt to the ground about 2 years ago or more. It is an ex-pub. Probably an insurance scam as it was actually a really old inn that had gotten very rough and nasty in its latter years, unfortunately. Say hello to another block of flats very soon no doubt. I'm sure the land was sold at a nice profit.

Burnt to the ground. Probably see flats built on the site in due course.

Deceased.

I heard rumours about it being a rough pub but when I went in I had no problems - mind you I probably looked a bit scarier than everyone else in there. :)
Friendly in a northern way (I'm from manchester so no prob for me)
Cheap food.

The big empty bar has more going on in it than the cosier one (not really cosy), but this pub hasn't got much to recommend it. The Hollybush down the road is a better choice.

Good place to go if you fancy a good hiding of an evening. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

One very ill advised visit about seven years ago. Can only pray they've refurbed since: just like the Slaughtered Lamb, but with a funny smell.

Too pricey!!!!!
