full last night when i visited, but that was a friday night. the last visit prior to that was on a thursday about two weeks ago and surprisingly, this place, which used to be guaranteed to be heaving, was only one third full.
i can't fault the service on the last two occasions, but you'd never say it was an exceptionally friendly place.

This place has gone so downhill. My partner and I were the first customers there today at twelve. The barman was rude and almost hostile to my partner and then when I paid £1.30 for crisps - extortionate - the barman was unbelievably rude. At this point we just left and went to another bar next to Charing Cross which was friendly. Why be rude when the place is empty. Apparently a lot of other gay men have found the same. Comptons should be careful, unless it sorts out the basics of good quality service then I can see it closing!

WHAT HAS HAPPENED ? Awful !!! Bar Staff with absolute attitude. Not too busy when I walked in, but took an eternity to be served. One barman looked at me, I asked for a pint and he sneered at me as he was wiping the bar down telling me 'don't you think I'm busy at the moment ?'. Stop mincing around in ripped tops discussing each others facial hair and concentrate on the customers paying over the top prices for not brilliantly kept bitter.

Has to be the most unpleasent experience you could ever wish to be in, exspensive drinks range which is very limited to bargain basement boose from tesco's, draught beer that give's you the s--ts, because they are so drug fu-ked they can't be bothered to clean there line's properly, I have never come across so many bar staff with so much attitude, get over yourselves, tops off or not you all probably have tiny cocks anyway, your are on minimum wage you bunch of fuc--ng tossers. As I predicted 15years ago bars are now more poly A sexual, open to everyone, far more interesting is it to be chatting to some blond rugby type hunk, than exchanging make up tips with some freak in a policemans outfit. GET OVER YOURSELVES.

Have to agree with the last few comments, back in town this last week and what has happened to the service in Comptons, very poor, quite unfriendly and very pricey..seemed quite quiet as well...prices have shot up, maybe its part of the new owners aims to give an excuse to straighten it up? A very poor pub in soho now compared to many other places.-

Its not that I object to tipping in bars and when on vacation in the USA I tip very well. However tipping is for good service, well perhaps not good, for Excellent service. A smile, a hello, an attempt to interact with the person you are serving.
A major problem in the UK is a lack of service especially in gay bars. Get over yourself. You are not there to preen and ogle the man you fancy whilst ignoring the person you are serving. I discovered this weekend that a particular barman was overcharging me or rather adding 10% of the price and putting this in his tip box. A tip is for me to decide. Unlike the USA where bar staff do not earn the minimum wage you are earning a living. A tip has to be worked for and one offered for good service.
At least the little trays for change have gone.
Time for some customer service training in this bar. it is not the first time i have had to complain about the bar staff at this venue. drinking is not cheap in London in comparison to Manchester but beer here is very expensive. the place was generally empty in comparison to a few years ago. price or bad service not sure ? A long way to go really. 5/10

This used to be my favourite gay pub but, sadly, has gone way downhill in last few months. Lager is now 4 per pint and bitter 3.80, and, on my last 2 visits, the bar staff (Sunday lunchtime) were rude and disinterested (which several other customers also commented upon). The friendly regular crowd appear to have deserted it and it was frankly quiet & uninteresting....what a shame!

Nice to see the old pub getting back to what it once was with the return of Neil as manager for the new owners. Customer service and bar staff have improved no end recently. Also have a 1am licence at the weekend

Whatever happened to Lord and Lady Compton? ...soho institutions of there time...pub has never been the same since...

Hi i was the first DJ there ever when lord and lady Compton had this place, it was full every night. In 1994 it had the upstairs bar reopen, and the DJ was moved up there. Then in 1996/97 it had another refit whit the new sound and lights. We managed to take this bar to no 4 best pre club venue in Mix Mag and no 7 pre club venue in DJ Mag. Also did 50 grand on one gay pride day some going that no other team have ever beaten yet. The music was always good, always ahead of every other west end venue, and the place had a very good mix of girls and boys in there. If you ask me they need to get back to that, lets hope the new owners will do this and re crown her as the no 1 gay venue in Soho.

Comptons has just been sold by M&B to the Faucet Pub Company, will be interesting to see what happens to this long established Soho institution...
|
Mike just loves this place: bit too beary for me.
|
No women for some reason? Lots of bald headed men in jeans and boots. Perhaps this is the local conservative office club?
|
Popped in again this Sat, has the mgt changed at Comptons? The atmosphere did not seem so good and all new staff...
|
Was out with some Gay Friends around Soho and as a Beer Bellied Real Ale swilling CAMRA member, I didn't expect to find anything decent but the London Pride was very drinkable, albeit it in plastic glasses but it was our choice to drink "Al Fresco". Exceptionally busy on a Saturday night but bar staff were very quick and no issues in getting served. The other ale on offer was Speckled Hen but am not a fan of GK! Cider was in bottles and from the Westons range. The atmosphere in Old Compton St. on a Saturday night is great so if you're in Soho, and fancy a decent beer, then worth a visit.

Gets very busy and congratulations to the barstaff who manage to serve everyone quickly .Worth a visit.
|
Can be very cruisy, and desperately crowded, but if you can get a seat, it can be pleasant enough. Upstairs can be a nice place to meet people, and very comfortable.
|
Not so keen on Comptons these days, popped in again over the weekend; has been a massive change of bar staff for the better I would say, but certainly doesn't have the charm that it used to..used to be really friendly but now very much just like many other west end pubs. Makes me laugh how there are posters in the pub saying they are now charging st8 prices, not rip off gay prices...do they mean we were being ripped off before?
|
I thought I was transported to a national front disco, i have never seen so many skinheads in all my life. This place is a real charm free zone

Whats happening at Comptons?? The majority of the excellant/regular bar staff have all left and reappeared at the Duke of Wellington/Admiral Duncan/Gay and Comptons are advertising for staff all the time...same manager though he has been there for years, maybe getting stale as hardly ever seen behind bar...
|
Been using Comptons on and off for almost 18 years. Busy place but relatively good service with enough staff who generally offer good service. Very busy especially at weekend. Cant understand why they have not got a later licence now, still closing at 11pm on Saturday nights, which is crazy in my opinion.
|
Worth a visit if in soho as usually busy and cruisy. Can be full so unless you get there early you probably won't get a seat. Service is usually friendly and good central stopping off point on your way around soho!
|
despite a recent redecoration and an attempt to make upstairs "posher" this is still a cruisy bar - very likely to get action in the toilets if that's your thing. But it is always packed despite Monday night being the only night with reasonable bar prices. Most of the staff are in their early 20s and obviously never learnt to smile, are the gayer than gay type, look like they've never pulled a pint before and definitely not worth your few extra pence in tips.

Bar staff need some lessons in being friendly, wouldn't bother going back.

a popular, cruisy smokey gay bar - that was 5 years ago on my recent visit this time around an almost breathable atmosphere, drinkable hand pulled London Pride, i could chat to my drinking partner without having to shout above the music, quite some imporvement but a hell of a long way to go, but then this is Soho...

Busy gay bar, pack you in, decor dirty and tired, "cruisy".
|
Very busy gay bar. Nice if you can get upstars seat by the window and watch the street below. A bit impersonal. Nice staff.

Loud, nasty and very commercial-gay.
