Nicely decorated interior, like many of the Nicholson establishments are. Sadly, that's where my appreciation ended. The pint I sampled was of poor quality. I left without finishing it.

Was in this week for a couple of pints - what a stunning makeover this place has had! I've never seen the Conan looking so good! Really good selection of real ales on, my favourite was "Dark Island" from Orkney. The usual suspects were there (Cally 80 and Deuchars) and a few rarer ones including Brew Dog "Punk IPA". For the top shelf lovers there was a healthy selection of malts taking up half the bar. Didn't eat on this visit, but all the food coming out looked really good - and edible!!! Bar staff were looking really crisp in shiny new uniforms - a welcome change to the random t-shirts of old! I bet the owners are kicking themselves that they didn't spend some money and TLC on this place before the summer - would have been packed every day... Looking forward to going back in again to see what other ales they'll have on...

1.89 a pint for the deuchars ipa/marstons epa and a warm welcome from a cute barmaid is a good start from this mitchells & butlers affair. The place was sadly empty though even though it was 11pm on a bank holiday monday! 6/10

When I visit Edinburgh I try to get around a few pubs in this area. Over the years this has been a decent pub with reasonable beer and pub food.
No longer. This place is going downhill fast. Last week Friends and myself arrived for a meal around 3pm. There were several free tables but they were all uncleared. We cleared one ourselves and sat down. After several minutes we managed to ask a waitress to please wipe the table. Only to be told "you will need to wait". At that point we should have got up and left but we stayed. Regretfully.
The food was very poor. Frozen chips undercooked and green. The selection of "todays seasonal veg" was half a plate of brocalli. Suet Ale pie needed a pickaxe to get into it. We waited almost 5 minutes standing at the bar trying to pay the bill whilst the manager and the barmaid chated to each other.
As for the beer, my sons Deuchars was flat and my cider had a head on it bigger than Alec Salmond.
Avoid this place.

After frequent visits ( more than they deserve) to this pub I now feel the need to write about the terrible service in this establishment. Although the food ordered was of decent quality and value, this was overshadowed by dirty tables, unclean surroundings ( some sort of moulding fruit on the radiator!) and terrible service from both the waitress and bar staff. A little manners go a long way. Unfortuantely it appears everytime I've been in here, regardless of who is working, the bar staff are very rude.. including what I assume was the manager.. leading by example I see!

We visited Edinburgh this week and, for a tourist wanting a good pint and decent food, this pub hits the spot! I had the impression on each of our three visits that all the customers were enjoying themselves. The real ale was well kept, and wine bought by the bottle was fantastically good value. The service was cheerful, and the tasty no-nonsense food was rapidly served. As a result, there was quite a rapid turnover of diners so, if there's no table free when you arrive, you may not have to wait long for one.

Two real ales, both well kept. This is an efficently run pub with friendly staff. Food was very good (same menu as The Kenilworth BTW) with decent portions and only took 10/15 minutes to turn up from ordering. The Conan Doyle attracts a cross section of people such as American tourists, youngsters popping in for a couple of post work drinks and older men watching the football on the big screens. Is it my imagination or are pub toilets generally cleaner in Edinburgh than the rest of the UK? Needless to say these were up to scratch. As for the aforementioned American tourists, my wife and I were sat next to a group of four in here recently. When they got up to leave, one of them back handed me across the nose whilst putting her coat on. Was an apology forthcoming? Like hell it was. No reflection on the pub of course, just don't sit too near to any Americans in here!

Hven't been in it for years, but I am sure it can lay claim to being the first pub in Edinburgh with a Space Invaders machine!!
