My favourite of the few pubs we visited in our mini-crawl of the Unthank Road area on Friday night (although not my partner's as the only wine offering comes in 187ml bottles of Stowells). Friendly backstreet pub in a traditional style whose walls are decorated with hundreds of beer mats. There was a TV showing some football but this was unobtrusive as the sound was turned down and replaced by 1960s music instead. Handpulls were similar to the ones on sale when Blue Scrumpy visited in 2013: London Pride (£3.30), Wolf's Golden Jackal (£3.20), Tipples Moonrocket (£3.50) and my choice, Derby Brewing's Quintessential for £3.60.

The Eaton Cottage is an attractive looking pub from the outside and is surrounded by foliage and vines (as I remember)! It is located in the suburb of Eaton. As in most places we visited, the locals were friendly and eager to offer advice. Beers on were Wolf Golden Jackal, Fullers London Pride, Tipples Moonrocket, Thwaites Wainwright & Green Jack Gone Fishing. The cider was Westons Old Rosie. There are 2 small rooms. Both have TVs which offer differing sports options. A nice little local pub, but a bit of a trek away from the city centre and other decent Norwich watering holes.

Visited yesterday afternoon, its seems to be a converted terrace of a couple of houses, lots of interlinked rooms, nice selection of ale, and a pleasant seating area outside. Was a bit annoyed at having to wait Wetherspoons style for the barman to appear though.

Nothing fussy, just well done. Friendly clientele, lovely atmosphere, ever rotating ale selection.

Probably one of the best pubs in the world (I only exaggerate a little bit). Seriously though, it's a great pub serving well kept real ales, and I wish I lived a bit nearer so that I could call it my local.

The Eaton Cottage is a brilliant pub, I'm glad that I live within a ten minute walk of it. The ale is excellent (especially the straw dog) and relatively affordable compared to some other pubs nearby, it has two nice outside seating areas and the clientele provide a good atmosphere (nice mix of locals and students, unlike many other pubs in NR2 which cater mainly for students and their tastes - i.e. loud video juke boxes, expensive ice cold designer drinks and tasteless food). Occasional good live bands and screens for football which don't make the place look like a ghastly 'sports bar'. They even do stones ginger wine for about 1.10, which is a nice warmer before heading home on winters nights.

Visited here after the Unthank in the hope of sampling some decent ales. I certainly wasn't disappointed as the quality and selection was very good. The White Horse Village was in superb condition and I will certainly be making a return visit in the not too distant future.

Friendly local with a choice of six ales including the house beer brewed by Winters Brewery

As i have moved nearer to this pub, I decided to visit it. I was really impressed with the beer and staff. The pub itself is well run and the selection of ale is excellent. London Pride and Summer Lighting are very good! Nice setup on the sports front with screens in either bar area, and the evening's entertainment is good. I work as a Bar Manager and in my opinion, this is how a pub should be run. Suffice to say, the place is now my local!

Pretty decent juicer, ring a ding dong. Theres slugs and spiders in the secret back garden (which incidentally is also if a wonderful place to have a chat), relaxed folk in the front garden, and always half a bakers dozen of ales to quaff.

Drop by - you can even spend your euros there!

Well kept pub, good selection of beer and well kept. Well disciplined, no obvious chav types, fair few students as well as genuine locals. Thursday night see's Lee Vassey, Norwich's own legend in his own lunch time. It's always packed, too packed as it happens but no one seems to mind.

On a recent trip to Norwich I whiled away a very satisfactory afternoon watching an underperforming England side struggle against Bangladesh. The cricket was poor but the beer and atmosphere were top drawer. Good rack of well kept ales at very reasonable prices.

Great beer. superb little courtyard, best boozer in town. Chavs not welcome, and definitely no estate agents with stupid haircuts and cheap suits......

Without doubt, the best pub in Norwich. Best beer, best atmosphere, good live music too. Not for birds, this is a blokes pub - Sorry girls...

The Eaton Cottage lies inside Norwichs Golden Triangle a mostly terraced residential area heavily populated by post-first year UEA Uni students.

I can imagine that opening description would put a whole sway of people off going within three miles of watering holes in the area. After all, even as a recent graduate, I have to admit that pubs who brazenly go after all that student loan money are usually nightmares packed full with pretentious tossers of both sexes and all manner of annoyingly garish adverts promoting piss poor offers. Personally free hand grenades are the only feature that could draw me into these hell holes.

Thankfully though Golden Triangle pubs mostly avoid this standard tactic, and the Easton demonstrates that good boozers can exist in student areas. This might be because its on the edge of the triangle and caters more for the none-student populous, and certainly if youre looking for cheap offers you wont find many in here. Still this allows the atmosphere to be good and none student, while there is a pleasing selection of drinks of all kinds. The pub itself is a little small and can get rather smokey, but it has a real portion of character thanks to its old style dcor. A very good 8/10.
