Surprising pub, looks small from the outside but very large once in. Polite, helpful barman, not got a smoking area. Only ale on was 'Doom Bar' but well kept.

Had a nice pint in here on a Friday lunchtime. Lively, not too busy. Could have a conversation. One minor complaint, don’t have football on big screens if it’s an obscure Spanish game. You didn’t look overly full of Spanish supporters!

Never tried the food but to be honest it looked a little bit better than spoons. On the beer front it was not that impressive with the best coming from purity brewery. Ok if your a cask marque scanner don't ask the blonde behind the bar where the certificate is, as you will get into a complex conversation that basically ends up with you being passed over to the nice gentleman with a brain who actually realises what the certificate is. Note to pub please train your staff on the things you advertise in the pub.

My husband and I have been visiting Shrewsbury every year to see our daughter and we always make a point to go to the Hole in the wall for a meal.
The food is very very good value for money, and we have never had a bad meal once.
The staff are very friendly including who we also to believe to be the manager and my husband has noted even one of the slightly eccentric chefs (that we do not believe we had seen last year) seems happy and very bouncy when he has come out to the bar for a drink and only makes the place seem more family run.

I would recommend this pub to everyone

I think this is a wonderful little place! Shrewsbury is such a beautiful town and there are so many places to eat that it is difficult to choose....however if like me, you want a happy medium of dining then this is the place to go.
My husband and I are from Telford and are relatively new to the Shrewsbury scene. We have eaten at The Hole in the Wall on a couple of occasions as we like the accessability of the venue and the varied and value for money menu. Previously we have been more than pleased with the acceptable service and food. However, today was a little bit different. Having ventured around town we again decided to lunch here, I like to avoid change so opted for an old favourite. The pub was quite busy (bustly not lively) but we were not kept waiting, although my salad came out not as described and not consistent with previous orders of the same dish!!! Now I hate to complain but I also feel that I do the chef a disservice if I don't point out my disappointment so I called over a member of staff and voiced my concerns. The young man swiftly whisked my plate away and said he would speak to the kitchen only to return moments later with a complimentary voucher for a free meal and to inform me that a revived meal would make it's way to me shortly with the chef's regards!!!
Wow!!! You don't get that kind of service in many high end hotels...have to say I am hugely impressed with the politeness and professionalism of the staff, the good will of the chef and the speed and grace in which the situation was dealt with. I was not expecting that at all and have to say that I think the staff on duty on 04/08/2011 are a credit to the company. I always enjoy my time here but now I will enjoy it all the more knowing that customers are still made to feel valued and welcome!

Stayed in Shrewsbury for a night last week and visited this pub, after reading previous comments on here I have to say I was amazed.
I had a Gammon and Eggs and my husband had the Mixed Grill, the quality of the food and service were absolutely amazing, my husband also had a pint of Pedigree (he is in to his Real Ales) no complaints here, he claimed it was "The perfect pint"
I asked a member of staff about the history of the pub as it seemed old and rather ornate, he explained that it was once 2 pubs and that there are records dating back hundreds of years, he then directed me to several photos and details around the pub offering up futher information.
Definately a top ten pub out of the many I've visited, freindly staff, great atmosphere, immaculately clean (even the toilets) not forgetting top class ale and pub grub !

Visited Hole in the Wall again earlier this afternoon and enjoyed 4 pints of Carling with some steak and chips. Delicious! I've always enjoyed coming here over the years and despite the negative remarks from other BITE members this place has always been a mainstay on my list of Favourite Pubs in Shrewsbury town centre.

I must leap to the defence of the Hole In The Wall here. I've never had a bad pint whenever I've visited this place. True, food can be a while if it's short-staffed but the folks here are quite friendly. Came here yesterday afternoon and enjoyed 2 pints of Spitfire Bitter which were excellent. (Had to have Spitfire really because 10p of every pint sold goes to the Help For Heroes campaign so I felt I had to do my bit to help these guys). Overall I find this place a good one to come to when out and about and its also an ideal place to start a pub crawl round Shrewsbury.

Actually managed to get served , wish i had`nt , worst pint of Hen i`ve ever had left most of it , wifes lager was flat , bloke in front of me complained about his Guiness , barman (barchav) threatened to chin him , avoid like the plague .

This pub is a bit of a Wetherspoonalike but without the beer choice. The menus look like JDWs and the dcor is fairly similar but with more comfortable seats. Two handpumps on the bar selling Bombardier and Old Speckled Hen. The main problem was that I couldnt get any!!!! There were only two people in front of me and one of these was just paying. Five minutes later I still hadnt been served. The girl behind the bar seemed to have no idea how to use the till and the couple in front of me had ordered main meals and some side orders. Another bloke wandered behind the bar served himself a drink and toddled off during this time. Get some decent staff on or at least train the poor sods whore working here! No wonder it was dead at 8:30 on a Thursday. I walked up to the Yorkshire House and got myself a pint there, I suspect Id still have been waiting in here. Pathetic!

Avoid - either head towards the Welsh Bridge and go to the Armoury or Montgomery's Tower, or head towards Swan Hill and go to the Admiral Benbow or Coach & Horses.

Awful! No atmosphere, poor beer, slow service (too few staff for a bar that size, especially one doing food orders) and NO CRISPS! Seemed popular with its regulars. Heaven knows why?

Cheap drinx but the first two pints of cask we asked for were both off even though they refused to turn the pump clips round, just pretty naff basically 4/10

The beer and food here were OK, especially for the price. The staff were quite polite - could have been a bit more attentive, but I've had worse.

It's alright, but nothing special.

Awful! The bar staff were swearing at each other whilst serving us, not a good start. The beer was very cheap but on tasting it you can see why, we had the Tim Taylor Landlord and it tasted like they'd added salt, we managed half a pint each then couldn't take any more and went somewhere else.

Never been a favourite of mine. In the day its popular with the work shy, of an evening can get very busy.

Food is average, beer is cheap.

Despite having a chalk notice facing the door as you enter The Hole in the Wall advertising the large list of real ales to be available, to the best of my knowledge, this pub has had NO real ales on for several months. Not even Banks!

Sometimes there is a wait of up to 1 to 1 1/2 hours for food, sometimes there is no chef on.

The food used to be good, but the last few times have not been very good. Carbonised (I am NOT exagerating!) chips being one example.

The staff are becoming experts in the arts of serving their mates first, and/or chatting amongst themselves or to off duty friends rather than serving customers.

It used to be a nice, clean pub, it is now rather dirty, even early on in the day.

had a fantastic evening in this pub last week, the food was good, hot and not overpriced, there is a second bar called the crypt which is great for chilling out in, all the staff were friendly and had an excellent experience, will definately be visiting again!

Was very disappointed with warm Banks' beer and poor food - burgers burned on the outside and barely cooked in the middle, salad was just lettuce, no pots of ketchup nor mayo, onion rings undercooked, bacon too hard to eat.
keith253 - 6 Feb 2007 17:50
Beer not too good. Food cheap and good value.
