The Ship and Whale, Rotherhithe

Took some friends from out of town yesterday afternoon/ evening with the plan of kicking back in the big comfy seats, putting back a load of lagers and tucking into a nice big roast dinner. Havign told them all continuously about how great this place is and a fantastic way to waste away a Sunday, I was absolutely amazed by what has happened to the place. Gone are the big comfy sofas, replaced by some rickety wooden chairs. The Orangeboom, always a treat, was flat. Tried the Holsten, even more flat. We all ordered a roast, the food was below average. None of the old style plate full of food with loads of roasties and swimming in gravy like your mum would make. Instead its an undercooked mess of a dinner, with soggy boiled veg and barely enough food to satisfy any of the group,and its not exactly cheap either. The plan of kicking back for the rest of the day was quickly replaced by getting the bill and getting the hell out of there as quickly as possible. This is the first time that I have ever felt the need to write a review of anything on the internet, my sole motivation being that the owner reads this and puts things back to how they were. There is a worrying lack of good pubs in the area and this was the best pub going, it seems a shame to let it fall by the wayside.
