The Rose and Crown, Godalming

THIS PUB REALLY IS PRETTY GOOD. A LITTLE CRAMPED WHEN BUSY BUT NOT BAD AT ALL. FRIENDLY OWNER, OPEN FIRE, GOOD TERRACE AND GARDEN. RATHER A BRACING OUTSIDE LAV DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. BUT ALL IN ALL VERY WORTH A VISIT.

The Anchor Inn, Godalming

THE ANCHOR WAS THE KIND OF PUB THAT YOU DONT THINK WOULD EXIST IN LEAFY SURREY. THROUGHOUT THE NINETIES YOU COULD WALK INTO ONE OF THE MOST BOHEMIAN BARS IN WESTERN EUROPE {THAT INCLUDES AMSTERDAM IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN}IN LAUGHABLY CONSERVATIVE GODALMING. THE THE POLICE NEVER ATTENDED, WELL NOT IN UNIFORM ANYWAY, AND TROUBLE WAS RARE IF EVER DUE TO THE HIGH ON LIFE {AND MOST OTHER THINGS} ECO-FRIENDLY, TREE HEAD CROWD. THEN A DARK SHADOW MOVED IN AS THE LONG TERM OWNERS MOVED OUT. SUDDENLY THE CUSTOMERS BEGAN TO RESEMBLE THE CAST FROM GRANGEHILL AND BOOTLEG BURBERRY AND ALCHOPOPS REPLACED BRAIDS AND BITTER. THE COPPERS CAME AND WENT AND CAME AGAIN AND THE AVERAGE DRINKER OF LEGAL AGE WENT AND DIDN'T COME BACK. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT A SAD STORY, THE ANCHOR HAS BEEN SAVED FROM THEME PUB ANONIMITY OR TOTAL DECAY BY OWNERS WHO ARE PREPARED TO INVEST TIME, WORK AND MONEY IN A TRADITIONAL BOOZER WITH A FANTASTIC GARDEN. IT MAY NOT BE THE PLACE IT WAS BUT THAT ISN'T ALWAYS A BAD THING.
