Profile information

A real ale man through and through. Want pubs to be pubs serving fresh good value food. Hate the term gastro pub and overpricing by pubs that think they are restaurants. Basically a grumpy old man and have been for years according to Mrs S.

March Hare, Broughton Hackett

Rating wold be ten for the food especially the excellent carvery. However the landlord is now having a laugh with the price of the beer. It has always been above average for the West Midlands even for a country pub but since the refurbishment it has become ridiculous. Last week paid £3.75 for a good guest ale but less than 4% strength. Even Banks' Mild is well over £3 so now make one pint last with the carvery meal and move elsewhere to drink.

The Smugglers Den Inn, Newquay

Visited three times at the end of February. Excellent Suday lunchtime pint and was busy with diners with what seemed to be excellent roast dinners. Back on Monday evening for a lovely meal off the specials board- a little above average prices but restaurant quality and friendly attentive staff.
Another visit for a couple of pints on a chilly Tuesday evening after an abortive trip to The Old Albion in Crantock. Got talking to the landlord by a roaring fire- a very pleasant experience.
Would give it a ten but some people would say the food was too dear.

The Old Albion, Crantock

Have to agree with other comments. Visited at the end of February with very fond memories of holidays in yers gone by.
Didn't even stop to sample anything and moved on to the Smugglers Den the other side of Cubert. If memory serves me right this was nothing special in the 70's and 80's but is now superb.
