The Railway, Mortlake

Oh my God....what has happened to this place. Haven't been for a while but used to pop in to a roaring fire in winter and a warming terrace in Summer - lots of good german lagers too - food was right up there - lots of choice - a real saturday evening treat with friends...

But......... i stood in awe - horrific fairly lights hanging out an upstairs window! the broken outside lights and the torn awning were just the start of it...once in it felt like a charity shop without charity - literally broken furniture, broken wall-lights...and to top it off only one beer! no wine!! - the place is barely open...

Apparently its been taken over - who by one asks - steptoe and son! - what a shame - it really was a cracking place and not so long ago!!

a fantastic pub. Great centre bar with guest ales and a warm reception. Superb views of the thames and an outside bar in the summer too. Can't go wrong.

The Old Ship, Hammersmith

Used to a be a master of river side pubs...easy to have a good pint on comfortable seating close to the lazy thames........but then.......it became apparent that one couldn't have a quiet pint in the outside seating area without at least ordering a two course meal...to sit there without food is a no goer - you are moved on very quickly to the grubby picnic tables around the side of the pub. It wouldn't be so bad if the food remotely compared to the Black Lion (50yds away) or the Dove (500yds) away...but it doesn't. The grub is overpriced and sadly very very ordinary pub grub...it's a shame. Also watch out for the student invasion on summer nights - seems to be the warm up pub for the walkabout!
WE suggest - Great views - but simply sit on the wall out the front with a tinny or two...don't bother with the boozer.

The Coat and Badge, Putney

went in here with a friend and his son for a quick drink before a fulham game, we bought drinks and a snack and found a seat and sat happily for 15mins. We we were then set upon by one bar maid after another literally demanding that we moved to cater for those eating sunday lunch...one even suggested the 'sunday lunch crowd' had booked...she was so condesending! And on asking the said customer - they hadn't booked. The manager arrived - he tried to find an alernative table but didn't make much effort and didn't. Frankly a crap experience in a bog standard pub with rude staff and why oh why the 2.2 crowd are so keen to eat in there gould only knows! Ah but it is middling putney isn't it..

The Ship, Mortlake

Cracking boozer on the river, loyal to locals and great for visitors...nice little patio and if you vist more than probably likely to get a welcome nod or 2 from the locals..good beers, not bad food and a lovely community feel that is lacking so very much these days...

one warning - steer clear on boat race days! its right on the finishing line and well vey busy.

One Paradise Road, Richmond

ha ha - hilarious place - tries hard to hit the cool wine bar accolade and in the 90's had a reasonable rep for good jazz and cosy drinking but now it seems to have become a venue for literally the oldest swingers in town! a definate no no for the under 50's.

The Defector's Weld, Shepherds Bush

it feels like 2am all the time, dark and grim - half-full of very young BBC admin-type staff! Music is unforgivingly random and loud. The garden is a concrete slither of an area next to smelly loos and the service is simply very slow with v.young and arrogant staff...I complained only to be told that I didn't have to go there..and it was our xmas do - through choice of course...good point...I won't.

Ye White Hart, Barnes

True a great location and have spent many an evening taking in the river over a cold beer or a glass of red...BUT since the 'lip service' revamp twinned with the hike in prices and yes the quite unfriendly and dreadfully slow staff...this once top pub is now little more than an also run in the local pub pecking order...
