Crooked Billet, Ware

A bit out of the way for a visitor to Ware and at the top of a backbreaking hill. You wouldn't pass this pub by accident. Great selection of real ales however, fantastically kept and served with a smile. 2 televisions with different games shown for the football fan. Not in the best position in the bar however and I always leave with a neck ache if I get in the seats below the main screen.

Probably the best beer in Ware though for the hardy real ale drinker.

High Oak, Ware

I like the High Oak. Don't go in as often as in the past due to work commitments but always very friendly staff and well kept ale. Usually Greene King IPA & Bombardier plus a guest on offer. Great viewing on the big screen if you like the Football/Rugby/Cricket etc... & without the chavvy element you get in the pubs in the High Street. Regular Darts team during the week & a very amiable Veterans football team drink in here during the winter.

White Horse Hotel, Rottingdean

Stayed here over the weekend. Good accomodation and excellent service from the restaurant. Girl behind the bar though frowned as if she had bet her mortgage on Ricky Hatton winning on Saturday night.

Some interesting local characters frequented the bar early Saturday evening as well as guy in drag who I assume was on his stag weekend.

Beer ;GK IPA, Old Speckled Hen plus own brew were OK, but not fantastic.

The Plough Inn, Rottingdean

Popped in for a half of Harveys summer ale which was fine having just completed a 4 mile run along the front to Brighton. Food menu looked interesting but not too many customers when I visited.

The Victory Inn, Brighton

Decent pint of a local ale in here. Also good food from the luchtime menu. Great place to just sit back & read the Sunday papers.

The Bodega, Newcastle

Great pub. Beautiful decor. Wide range of ales & plenty of room. Excellent quiz night on a Thursday evening.

The Coach and Horses, Norwich

Visited this pub over the weekend on a football tour. Great range of beers brewed on site at their own Chalk Hill brewery. My favourite was the Gold @ 4.3 %. Very drinkable on a warm summers afternoon.

Worpell, Ware

Went in here last week as part of a local pub crawl. Very pleasant small pub with husband & wife landlords. Greene King pub with IPA & Abbot. Had a guest beer on (Old Hooky) which was great.

The White Horse, Hertford

A roaring fire was most welcoming on my arrival yesterday evening. Two bars downstairs and an array of smaller rooms which were full of families upstairs. Very friendly landlady nade us feel at home immediately. Full range of Fullers Ales plus a guest(Adnams Southwold). Had the Discovery which was excellent. Will be going back again.

The Feathers Inn, Wadesmill

Great carvery still in Dec 2007. Beer a bit pricy though. Greene King IPA & Old Speckled Hen available.

The Navigator, Ware

Now called The Navigator but already dubbed The Chavigator by some local Ware drinkers. Very large interior with big screens for the football fans. Pleasantly suprised to see 2 Real ales on when I visited. Brains SA & Black Swan and only 1.55 a pint as part of a special Rugby World Cup promotion that had seemed to overrun. Served rather colder than I would like but tasted great. Well priced food menu which I understand is very popular with the lunchtime office trade. Fantastic location on the banks of the river Lea.

Trafford Arms, Norwich

Visited this pub during a football tour having played the resident team on a Saturday afternoon. Very busy and with good reason. Fine selection of around 9-10 real ales and good food served too. We shall be renewing the fixture again next season.

The Fat Cat, Norwich

Great range of ales and a good atmosphere. Visited on a crawl of Norwich with some hardened real ale fanatics. This was my favourite on the day and comes highly recommended.

The George IV, Great Amwell

Went here for Sunday lunch recently as i hadnt visited for years. Now run by a local family who were very friendly and hospitable. They had Greene King IPA & Speckled Hen as well as Adnams bitter. I had the IPA which was fine. Spacious restaurant at the rear but they also serve food in the bar if you prefer. It appeared that the restaurant was only open on a Sunday. Very good food & service but not cheap. Also, 10% service charge is automatically added to the bill which I disliked.

Thomson's, Edinburgh

Hadnt been in here for a few years and was impressed with the changes made. Bright and airy with plenty of choice from a full range of real ales and single malts. The "mind the step" notice is on the wrong side of the toilet door however and I for one tripped up on a couple of occasions when exiting the Gents. Be warned.

Ossians, Edinburgh

This place has changed hands in the past 12 months and not for the better. Their own brew Ossians bitter has now gone to be replaced by the acceptable but not difficult to find Deuchers. Only had one pint in here and moved on. Shame.

The Golden Rule, Polwarth

Fantastic Saturday spent in this pub last weekend. In a group of a dozen Englishmen up to watch the Hearts game we were made fantastically welcome by staff & locals alike. Apart from a visit to Tynecastle for the second half of the football we spent the whole day here watching England beat Australia then France beat New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup. Three Real Ales on and very tasty pies in gravy for a mere 1.60. Toasties that id have to pay 3.50 for back in London cost a mere 1.10 here. Cant praise them highly enough.

The White Swan, Hoddesdon

Visited this pub last week and was disappointed with the quality of the ale. The Black Sheep was undrinkable and way past its best. The Greene King IPA was passable but ive tasted better. No sport on the telly when I visited so pretty quiet all round. Decent size pub with plenty of bar stools at tables which I liked. Will give it another go as i may just have caught them on an off night.

The Guildford Arms, Edinburgh

My favourite Edinburgh pub. Vast range of Real Ale & single Malts. Always pretty busy when ive been in there so seating is at a premium. Have a restaurant although i have never eaten there so cant comment. Fantastic ceilings worth a visist on their own as is seeing a new customer try to negotiate the revolving door by pushing it the wrong way. A real treat.

The Bow Bar, Edinburgh

Always pay a visit to the Bow Bar on a trip to Edinburgh. Great selection of real ales and single malts. Ideal for the real ale enthusiast. Also, nobody under the age of 40 seems to go in there, hence the lack of TV, fruit machines & juke box. Great.

Jolly Fisherman, Stanstead St Margarets

Excellent location on the riverbank and ideal for a summers day. I found the prices rather high though, and the choice of ales was very limited on the day of my visit.
