The White Horse Inn, Beverley

wow - what a beaut! BIg fire, low ceilings, dimly-lit, great (cheap) beer and a multitude of rooms. Goes straight into my top ten. I'm going back just to sit there for the day!

The Tut 'n' Shive, Bishop Auckland

town's haunt for young goths, with regular live music so perhaps surprisingly has a good choice of proper beer. Usually 2 ales, sometime 4, plus Old Rosie cider. Beers can be from anywhere between Cornwall and the Orkneys, and there's usually a fairly hefty dark brew on offer. Juke box can be loud and heavy of an evening!

The Victoria Hotel, Durham

great collectin of whisky - and whiskey - good range of ales, probably basically the same layout since it opened. Several separate rooms, which is a welcome novelty these days. Unspoilt beaut a bit of the twon circuuit, but a favourite on the proper beer circuit.

The Half Moon, Durham

now taking advantage of the new opening hours (not full advantage, thankfully!), always a quality pint from a good range of beers in a proper pub where you can generally get a seat apart from Fri/Sat evenings. Sky TV will be back soon, apparently

The Grand, Bishop Auckland

brewery out the back, at least six proper beers plus cider, live quality music (usually free. Beers generally brewed on site or from smaller brewers. Well worth a try

The Cork and Cheese Ale House, Southend on Sea

Cracking boozer, a jewel in an eysore of a town centre, and a pub this town centre does not deserve - a real gem, with good cask beer, Belgian/Dutch bottles, and friendly staff. Don't take anoy notice of the "full of old men" comments, as they're obviously made by someone raised on alcopops and cheese pasties.

The Queens Head, Lichfield

excellent pub - good quality and choice of beer, no noise, great pork scratchings, and top cheesy food! Clean and friendly, even toward us visiting Sunderland supporters, to whom this is now a favourite stop on the way to games in the West Midlands

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

best pub in london, absolutely unchanged in the twenty-od years I've been visiting-apart from the appearance of seats out the front! Comfy, great decor, with no music or noisy bandit. Colourful characters abound, and we once met John Hurt in the bar, amongts the pseudo literati that flounce in from time to time! Excellent beer, and now a guarranteed meeting place for those from my part of the world when "in the city."

down to earth pub with two big rooms, up to 7 good quality real ales, and cheap accommodation. Live music friday or saturday (usually free)5 minutes from railway station through ASDA car park.
