The White Horse Inn, Beverley

wow - what a beaut! BIg fire, low ceilings, dimly-lit, great (cheap) beer and a multitude of rooms. Goes straight into my top ten. I'm going back just to sit there for the day!

The Tut 'n' Shive, Bishop Auckland

town's haunt for young goths, with regular live music so perhaps surprisingly has a good choice of proper beer. Usually 2 ales, sometime 4, plus Old Rosie cider. Beers can be from anywhere between Cornwall and the Orkneys, and there's usually a fairly hefty dark brew on offer. Juke box can be loud and heavy of an evening!

The Victoria Hotel, Durham

great collectin of whisky - and whiskey - good range of ales, probably basically the same layout since it opened. Several separate rooms, which is a welcome novelty these days. Unspoilt beaut a bit of the twon circuuit, but a favourite on the proper beer circuit.
