On a trip to The Whip inn and passed this pub and it was in darkness friday night so we asked about it at The Whip and it has apparently been closed for about two weeks. The new owners lasted about a year and its currently on the market leasehold. Just goes to show its all well and good having all the gloss but you have to supply the goods.

Great little pub on the green in a quintessentially english village.
Nice buzz to the place very friendly.
Very small but appears to have a large garden for the summer.
Beer in excellent condition. Friends in the village consider it to be the best pub in the village now it has new management.

The Hop Pole Inn, Aylesbury

Very fine pub including new brewery and recently opened beer shop. 10 ales 8 on when i last visited tried 4 all good. Seems very strange that its not in the good beer guide but one of the other customers said there had been an issue with the cellar and warm beer for a while which has now been sorted. Seems a bit odd that the local camra boys didnt liase with Vale brewery about it or maybe they did.
But as our conversation continued and others joined in we went through the other pubs in the aylesbury wycombe area and since ive been in the area I have been to them all in the last 18 months the general agreement was that the best 4 are The hop pole eight bells long crendon The whip Inn lacey green & The royal standard woburn green (no particular order) We also covered several other pubs from the area which led me to ask if anyone knew why the current pub of the year was the Wheel in naphill which is a good pub but not really a pub of the year. I was amazed to find that if a pub in this area wins it is barred from winning for 5 years so all the best pubs are currently out of contention. How wierd is that Ive been a camra member for years and lived in several areas and often the best pubs win year after year as they should.
Anyway I only started out to comment on the Hop Pole so I shall finish by saying its an excellent pub and top notch in the area.

The Manor Arms Hotel, Abberley Village

Been here a few times when walking in the area and always found it friendly and the beer to be in good condition. Also the small back bar is dog friendly. Worth a visit if you are in the area

Lots of one time only postings here.
But as we were nearby on a walk we thought we would have a look in. Seem to have spent some money on the refurb and it looks good but im not sure its a drinking venue. We got pounced on almost before we got in the door and asked if we would be dining. I dont normally dine in wellies and this was no exception. The staff appeared a bit uncomfortably about us staying at the bar for some reason and kept suggesting we sat down. I Like Drinking At The Bar so we did. Unfortunately I got stung for the round 2 doom bar & a peroni in a vase Im pretty sure it was 12.50 ouch! west end prices in a rural pub. The others didnt fancy paying for another round so we continued on.

Red Lion, Marsworth

Excellent pub tip top beer and a good range that changes regularly.
Good location on the canal and pleasant beer garden.
Food lets it down a bit and the staff are not always exactly enthusiastic but nevertheless the best pub in the village

The Valiant Trooper, Aldbury

Always found the ales to be very well kept and a good range.
Whenever I have been in they always have a Tring beer which has been faultless.
Its also open all day which is handy. Proper pub well worth a visit

The Artichoke, Croxley Green

About 7 years ago I had a girlfriend in rickmansworth and we used to frequent both the artichoke and the coach and horses a 100yds away on the green both good pubs. Village green sort of pubs as you would expect. NOW
plastic plam trees pool tables dirty glasses horrendous. Is the landlord trying to shut the pubs for expensive housing or just inept.

The Bootlegger, High Wycombe

Worth a visit good range of ales various handpumps 6 available when we were there. Huge range of bottled beer not my thing and appeared pricey but the handpumps were well priced at 3.
Appeared to be no food but a range of takeaway options they would organise for you.

The Wheel, Naphill

Popped in whilst in the area nice little pub couple of small bars and eating area at the back. Only had greene king ales which are not my personal favourites but nevertheless in good condition.

King William IV, Speen

Been twice only because the first time was shut saturday afternoon which seemed strange but my mate lives in the village and says it has odd hours.
Beer was reasonable food probably better than the ale the only choice was rebellion

The Whip Inn, Lacey Green

Decided to visit some pubs on the 300 bus route unfortunatly we didnt get to far as The Whip was the first port of call and we never got any further.
What a great little pub 6 ales mainly from micro breweries all in great condition. It was surprisingly busy midweek but you can see why.
Whist we were there a chap came through with boxes of fish which the landlord told has had just come of the boats in Devon and delivered direct. So as it was 6.30ish we stayed for cod & chips it was the best ive had in years.
Brilliant beer great food open all day more pubs like this please.
