Park Tavern, Chichester

It seems the Park Tavern's previous problems with rude staff are a thing of the past. The new landlord is very pleasant and seems to really be turning the place around at last! The Gales Seafarer is a great pint the dogs tottering back and forth through the bar add to the the pleasant atmosphere, we will be going back!

The George and Dragon Inn, Chichester

Things have taken a turn for the better recently, the staff are friendly and attentive, the food is excellent again (try the Dragon breakfast for a great way to start the day!) and the range of beers is good. More points scored for the fact they now keep Tribute as well!

The Evening Star, Brighton

You must seek out the Evening Star on a trip to Brighton, by far the best pub in town! And there are a few...

The White Hart, Headington

What a fantastic pub, one of Oxford's hidden 'village' boozers, and only a stone's throw from the busy London Road. The south facing garden is a delight in sunny weather, the food is good and the beers are well kept. In a city crammed with pubs this is one of the best, worth a visit.

The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean

The rightly famous "Pub With No Name" has a fantastic atmosphere, if you can find it.... Although some earlier negative comments have found fault with the food and the staff we have been going there for some time and always enjoyed our visits, with no problems to report. The beers are great and the Edward Thomas room with its fire and display on the life and work of the local poet is a wonderful spot to while away a few hours with friends. Hopefully the few problems people have encountered recently will be ironed out and all will be well again with this brilliant pub. Definitely worth a visit.

The Harrow, Steep

The Harrow is a wonderful old-fashioned pub that rightly deserves to be on the list of the best in England. Two bars, with separate access from outside, service through a small hatch in one, and a tiny bar in the other. Excellent beers, very well kept and served straight from the barrel. A joy to sit outside in the summer despite being only a stone's throw from the busy A3, which strangely does not impinge on the atmosphere of the place. Toilets are old and a little shabby, and on the other side of the road, just as they should be, even if it means a quick dash on a wild winter's night!...Absolutley a must visit pub by anyone's standards.

The Queens Head, Petersfield

Lovely village pub, especially the quaint back bar with its long benches and dart board. Good beers on offer, friendly staff. A great stop-off at any time of the year.

Wests, Chichester

Wests is an odd pub, the surroundings are great, the soaring roofs and church architecture give it the edge over some other pubs in Chichester for character, but the service can be appallingly slow. The circular bar seems to create the effect that the staff rarely know who to serve next because the customers rotate around it desperately trying to get their attention! Having said that they keep some good beers and a new menu of top pub grub including a well-stocked salad bar if that takes your fancy. All in all worth a visit, but prepare to wait when it's busy.

The Vestry Hotel, Chichester

Popped in for a drink with friends a couple of Saturdays ago, but many tables had been cleared away to make room for a dancefloor in front of the DJ desk which meant standing room only. The music was really loud, and the drinks were served in plastic glasses, not great really.

The Mainline Tavern, Chichester

The Mainline has now closed and been converted into flats.

The Coach and Horses, Chichester

Sadly, another of Chichester's fine old pubs has bitten the dust in the face the relentless pressure from breweries who prefer to flog off under-achieving properties to developers rather than plough any cash into their boozers. The Coach and Horses finally closed in March 2010, last vestiges of pub fittings last seen being slung into a skip outside. Shame.

The Slug and Lettuce, Chichester

I know it doesn't exactly fit Beer in the Evening but they also do delicious breakfasts here, give it a try!!...

The Old Cross, Chichester

A nice pub, well presented, with friendly staff but unfortunately a lack of customers! The staff almost look startled at being disturbed when you go in. This is strange for a pub with no obvious defects, hopefully things will pick up.

The George and Dragon Inn, Chichester

We've been put off the George & Dragon recently by the seemingly increasing rudeness of the staff, culminating in a recent incident when the barman refused to replace a drink he had mis-prepared, asserting that he was right and we were all wrong. We'd now rather go to other pubs where the welcome is warmer!

The Crown Inn, Churchill

Quite simply one of the best pubs I have ever been to. Fantastic ales straight from the barrell, I had the Palmers and highly recommend it. Food is only served at lunchtime, of which I heartily approve! We had the beef sandwiches which were absolutely superb.
Gorgeous surroundings at the end of a track, no pub sign, it just looks like a cottage but those that find it will not be disappointed! A must see.

The Market Porter, Borough

Popped in for a pint last saturday after grabbing some lunch from the market, it was very busy but I've been here before and find that it's worth the hassle of the crowds. Quite a large pub, especially for this location, and a fine array of beers available. In my opinion one of London's best, give it a try!

Fox and Hounds, Funtingdon

Great food in comfortable and welcoming surroundings. Good range of beers. The array of comfy sofas make this an ideal spot for chilling with a pint when the weather's bad!

The Boathouse, Instow

Fine beers and fine food in a lovely location opposite the beach, with a beautiful view across the Torridge Estuary to the sea and Lundy Island in the distance. I had a delicious chicken dish with salad, but be warned, this place is extremely popular, we just happened to be there as it opened it's doors at 6 and witnessed the hilarious sight of people dashing from their parked cars to get in, within a couple of minutes every table was taken!

The Red Lion Hotel, Clovelly

After being fleeced for 5 just to walk down into the village, this place is a welcome stop off! The food and beers were great, we had some fine pasties. The snug is unspoilt and comfortable. Cracking view of the little harbour, and a good place to recharge your batteries before the slog back up the hill to the car.

The Hartland Quay Hotel (Wreckers Bar), Hartland

Utterly breathtaking location at the bottom of a slope surrounded by majestic cliffs and crazy jagged rocks sticking out of the sea. The staff are friendly and helpful, the menu and beers looked good but on this occasion the recommendation comes from the fact that we had what is undeniably the very finest cream tea I have ever had, and I've had a few!! If you are in this part of Devon this place is an absolute must! Be aware that you will need 1.50 to drive down the cliff road to the car park beside the hotel, cheap at the price I reckon!

The Hoops Inn, Horns Cross

A pretty thatched country pub, very good food and beers served by friendly staff. I don't agree with previous comments, we found the staff pleasant and helpful and the prices were pretty average really, some dishes may have been around the 15 mark but I had a fine bangers & mash for 6. The back bar is the place to sit if you can, it still retains the feel of an old village pub. Worth a try.

22 Aug 2007 09:54

The Black Rabbit, Offham

The food may not be up to it's old standard here but that aside it has one of the finest locations in the area with a beautiful view of the castle across the watermeadows. A good pint by the river on a sunny day with a view to die for, not too shabby really!

22 Aug 2007 09:48

The Fountain, Chichester

This is a great boozer, one of the few left in Chichester that hasn't been turned into a wine bar/restaurant. They serve good food and stock a wide range of ales. Regular live music nights make it a good bet at weekends for something a bit different. One criticism is that we were moved from the back room because they were closing it up, which is fair enough, so we sat outside only to be asked five minutes later to move inside because of some rule about people drinking outside the pub after a certain time, which is a bit odd.

22 Aug 2007 09:37

The Crown and Anchor, Chichester

A great pub in a fantastic location. On a summer evening with a stunning sunset across the creek there can be few finer places. The food here is good, and they stock a good range of beers, although we were slightly surprised to find Peroni oon tap being sold at 4 a pint, and when we asked why it was so expensive we were told it was because it's a very good beer, and being near Chichester people will pay high prices! So steer clear of the outrageously priced Italian lager and you'll have a cracking visit!

22 Aug 2007 09:32

The George, London Bridge

What a fantastic place! The ancient galleries above the yard give a wonderful old-fashioned atmosphere (just don't look at the ugly brick backside of Guy's Hospital at the end of the yard!!)There must once have been hundreds of pubs like this around London, but now this is one of the only ones left, hence it is owned by the National Trust. Good beers, plenty of space to sit outside and the Borough is becoming a fantastic place to grab something to eat too. What could be better!

The Hole In The Wall, Chichester

Now fully refurbished and nicer than before, late closing (1am) fridays and saturdays, good atmosphere. Pool table. Can get a bit smokey.

The George and Dragon Inn, Chichester

The best pub in Chichester, especially if you can get a seat in the back yard in the summer! Great beers & food.

27 Feb 2006 08:58

The White Horse Inn, Bradford on Tone

Good beers and a sunny garden, slightly raised from the street, perfect for watching the world go by. Good food, skittle alley.

27 Feb 2006 08:54

The Talbot Inn, Ripley

Large old coaching inn on the former London to Portsmouth Road. Apparently often used by Nelson on his trips between the two. Cosy old fashioned bar, good simple bar food, large garden & pretty former stable yard with an unusual arch. Definitely worth a trip!

The Royal Oak, East Lavant

Very pretty pub which has unfortunately been restaurant-ified. The food is undeniably excellent but the prices are astronomic!

30 Sep 2005 08:56

The Richmond Arms, West Ashling

Very friendly village pub, excellent range of ales if that's what you're after. Top notch bar food. Pretty location by the Mill Pond.

30 Sep 2005 08:22

The White Hart, South Harting

Large inside, full of character. Very large beer garden with amazing views of the South Downs. Excellent food.

30 Sep 2005 08:15

The Coach and Horses, Compton

Friendly village pub, nice staff who didn't mind our group invading. Proper bar billiards, good beer.

30 Sep 2005 08:12

The Barley Mow, Walderton

Excellent food, friendly staff! Perfect stop-off on a walk over Kingley Vale. Try the skittle alley too.

27 Sep 2005 14:01

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

My favourite London pub, it really has to be seen to be believed just what a tiny space it is squeezed into! The only access is down a tiny alley from either Hatton Garden or Ely Place and it's a complete gem! Last visited on a monday afternoon when it was really quiet, it then filled with office workers but I know from previous visits that it then becomes quieter and really cosy later in the evening when all the suits have scooted home on the trains! Well worth a visit.

23 Sep 2005 16:59

The Kings Arms Hotel, Kingsbridge

The food here is top notch and the staff are really friendly. The only problem on our visit was the slightly odd woman who got up and started singing (badly) into a karaoke machine which was bad enough but when the volume was cranked up to a level that made blood seep from our ears we decided we'd had enough and decamped to somewhere quieter! I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time so give it a try (the fish & chips make it worth it!)

The Happy Medium, Chichester

Quite a quiet pub, very friendly staff and a great place to get a game of pool. A good place for a quiet chin-wag with friends. They also have a tv for the big sports events, although last time I visited there was a documentary about stuffing animals on which added a slightly surreal air to the evening!

21 Sep 2005 16:23

The Vine, Pamphill

This is a wonderful pub, we stopped there on the way to Devon on the recommendation of a friend. The bar is probably the tiniest I've seen, and the place is really old fashioned which makes it worth a visit. We enjoyed a fantastic ploughmans and a game of draughts on one of the outdoor sets fixed to the table tops in the garden. This has got to be better than motorway services. It is quite hard to find, so keep your wits about you, it's worth it!
