The Middle House Hotel, Mayfield

Middle House - following a few unsatisfactory experiences which prompted my mixed review of two years ago, I have fallen back in love with you again. What a relief! Best foody pub for miles around with a warm atmosphere and, as ever, top-notch staff.

The White Hart, Wadhurst

We had a swift drink and left as fast as possible. It's totally lacking in atmosphere. I'm sorry to leave such a bad review but this is just not a pub you want to spend time in.

The Star Inn, Heathfield

Overpriced food and painfully slow service despite there being few other diners. Whilst waiting 30 minutes for desserts, we overheard the landlord pontificating about the fact that it only takes one negative aspect to sour a diner's opinion of an otherwise good experience. It turned out that he had forgotten to send the order through to the kitchen. Oh the irony!

The Sussex Ox, Milton Street

At last, a pub experience that surpassed expectations! We made our first visit today and it will not be the last. Arriving at around 1 o'clock on a Sunday, we were told that all the inside tables were booked but we had a lovely lunch outside, enjoying the fantastic views of the South Downs. The staff were friendly and competent, the menu was interesting and welcoming for vegetarians, which is always a relief for me. I'd say there was something for everyone and nothing too budget-blowing despite good quality ingredients. Although the kitchen must have been very busy, food arrived quickly and the attention to detail, both in our meals and the general ambience, was excellent. If pushed to criticise, I'd say the chips could have been cooked for a little longer but this was a small matter in what was otherwise a very enjoyable experience. We envisage the Ox becoming a new favourite pub for us and hope to return for.an evening meal very soon.

The Oak and Ivy, Hawkhurst

I had the misfortune to order a veggie burger here recently. It consisted of a frozen burger slapped in a 'plastic' bread bun - dry, dull and totally lacking in any care. The chef and management should be ashamed. This is the worst kind of pub food. I could have made the same thing at home for 30 pence.

The Middle House Hotel, Mayfield

This is a very well-run pub that I've been visiting now for over 20 years. I've had many wonderful bar meals, served by friendly staff in comfortable surroundings. My only gripe is that portion sizes have got progressively smaller whilst prices have steadily risen to the point where I no longer feel I'm getting value for money. The standard of the food is excellent but until the management can relax their profit margins a little, I will be going elsewhere.

The Beacon Hotel, Langton Green

I was really hoping to like this place because the setting, with views over Tunbridge Wells, is so spectacular but I experienced overpriced and poor quality food - such a bad combination. I had an egg and spinach sandwich which had been made with stale bread and contained truly awful catering quality margarine. There is simply no excuse for abusing their customers' taste buds in this way when charging 9 for a garnished sandwich.
