The White Lion, Streatham

Closed (at least temporarily as of about a week ago) after a big fight which included police. Really. You're across from the cop shop almost, on a road which has a poice car never more than three minutes from driving past with lights flashing, and you want to start a fight? Been in there a couple of times, never liked it much anyway. Leigham is a good nearby option for a real boozer or Five Bells (with a weekly guest ale plus others on tap)or Taylors ten mins walk towards Streatham HIll Station or Bedford Park five mins walk towards Streatham Station.

The Meyrick Arms, Clapham Junction

Bugger. Missed it. Just wanted to see the legend. He who hesitates is lost,

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

Heaps of ale, never had too much of a problem getting served even when busy and can usually find a seat if you keep your eyes open for those finishing their drinks. Been dirnking her on and off for 12 years. This is a good pub.

The Pied Bull, Streatham

Sawthe livemusic in here one Sun arvo, pleasant enough. Since then they scrapped Sky Sports and sports generally, or so the bar man told me a couple of months back.

Jack Stamps Beer House, Streatham

Still no Foxtons (the credit crunch rocks) and there are three ex RE offices ready for the taking.

Viva la revoluzion - KILL THE GOAT, KILL THE GOAT.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

It is what it is; dirty full of muttering deadbeats and smelly work dodgers. The Guinness was good.

Taylors, Streatham

Very good Sunday roast, had lamb, great gravy. Would have qualified as a great sunday roast if there had been a bit more meat, thought it was a bit stingy in this respect although it was late in teh day and they may have been trying to make remainders stretch. Still no action on Jack Stamps next door.

The Five Bells, Streatham

In there a week ago, good food, friendly bar staff (cool boss and take no shit bar lady) and wasted merry locals - a slice of life. They have guest ales which are behind the bar but conditioned - tell you what is in and what is coming. Recommended. Live music Saturday nights. Much better than the Horse and Groom, slightly better than Taylors, up there with the Leigham and the Bedford Park but probably not quite as good as the Leigham. It might ruin it, but I can't help hankering for live football to be shown in there.

The Goat, Battersea

Shockingly poor overpriced food that you wait too long for. Staff who don't give a stuff and service that takes forever. I mean, dear jesus, I can only imagine the positive reviews on this site are from the workers there or relate to some point in the week when the chef is on his game and there are four staff and seven customers. DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB and then maybe it will close and somethng good can happen to this space. Boycott the Goat.

The Leigham Arms, Streatham

At first impressions, great pub. Three rooms and a beer garden and a front area, no teev in front bar which is great for those who don't want it. I only went in for one (which is of course three), it is a locals bar but commitment will I am sure bring the same from the pub. One point, there seemed to be a lot of glasses on top of beer taps and not much choice for a Saturday arvo but that could have beena delivery problem. Like some else already said - a proper old boozer.

Do we know how many people have been run down by stepping straight onto the road?

The Prince of Wales, Brixton

Was there Saturday night, good place (especiallysicne I am not normally a doof-doof dance type person) with a good area out the back for smokers. Personal choice but I'd put the Effra and the Windmil above this place but the Dogstar and the 'spoons below.

The Bedford, Balham

Great place. Grotty back bar for old men, gastro-esque front bar full of bright young things (I know it is wrong to hate them for being bright young things but...), a great venue in the round and good upstairs as well. The beer garden sucks but hey (out the front is good for people watching) and prices are London prices as opposed to what they should be (Streatham prices). The chips are the best in London (IMO) but the food is probably too expensive (Tazine over the road is good, BYO booze from the Threshers Offie). I have worked out what makes it good as well, there is probably a higher female-male ratio in here than most pubs. Very pretty boys and girls, very amiable.

The Horse and Groom, Streatham

Nice enough inside, some big plasmas, nice enough crowd, good prices. There is a blonde barmaid who needs to be pushed out the door though and a manager who needs a dry slap. Busy (but not crowded) and she is the only staff member on, 10 mins to get a drink. She makes a dog's breakfast of porung a Guinness and it tastes the worse for it. She doesn't aknowledge the fact you are looking to get a drink (no peripheral vision, god knows if she has spotted you, and no I was not waving a twenty note around like I was in a strip joint) and they will not get more regular custoemrs if they neglect anyone who is not a regular to serve the regulars when it is bloody well my turn to get served. Smiling and fawning over regulars at the pool table end of the bar while treating others like something on her shoe is not good customer service. Grrrrrrr.

The Prince Albert, Brixton

Good ales, one seasonal, but it has a lyric from 'Guns of Brixton' by the Clash above the bar which seems incongrious since the pub appears gentrified. But that might say moer about me than the pub. Good service, good price, good ale. Better than the Dogstar.

The Beehive, Brixton

Was in here Saturday night. Fine. It is a 'spoons. Better than Balham, worse than Victoria. Unbeatable prices, coz it is a 'spoons; shit atmos and clientele, coz it is a 'spoons.

The Windmill, Brixton

Yeah, my first thought was community centre (do take the time to check out the actual Windmill in the park, quite surreal) but serves a good Guinness, friendly locals, quite good. Will be back to see bands and I do like the late opening aspects (they have a sign above the bar for last trains from Brixton Tube). That's a good sign.

The Effra Hall Tavern, Brixton

Was open open Monday when I went in there. Okay Guinness, toilets at street level (so no narrow staircase into a stinking sewer), pleasant locals and good beer garden. The best I have found in Brixton but the search continues and there is something to be said for the Windmill..
