The Plough, Whitchurch

Great local pub. It has bar area which can be busy on the weekend and a lounge area for a more relaxed evening. Also has a small side room which sort of works as an overflow section but you have to go back to the bar or lounge to get a drink. It also has a large skittle alley at the rear which can be hired out and is very popular.

It has two large outdoor areas, the front of the pub is popular with bar occupants while the pretty, leafy beer garden at the rear is a really lovely relaxing space.

The bar staff have been there for a long time and are super friendly with all the patrons. It's become a bit expensive of late and don't have a big range of drinks, another Brains pub, but always kept well.

During the day they serve hot meals which are really excellent. Proper home made pies and the like, delicious.

Fox and Hounds, Whitchurch

Decent local pub but can get very busy at times. Large beer garden which can be lovely in the summer if you don't mind small children running around all over the place.

Some drinks are extortionately priced, a friend ordered a bottle of Jacques and was charged 7.10! Food is standard pub grub but can be very slow service at times.

Has a sizeable car park.

The Lewis Arms, Tongwynlais

Many people have told me that this is a 'local pub for local people'. Couldn't be further from the truth. The pub lies on the Taff Trail and attracts hundreds of cyclists and walkers every week. In close proximity of lovely walks and a stones throw from the beautiful Castell Coch, The Lewis is very welcoming.

The staff are extremely friendly, as are the locals. The food and drink are standard Brains fare so nothing special there. Good pub quiz on Tuesday. Pretty front beer garden is popular on sunny days.

The Waterguard, Cardiff

Superb pub. Never too busy and it's Sam Smiths, what could possibly go wrong?

The Rummer Tavern, Cardiff

The Rummer is a nice little pub which attracts a decent punter. It doesn't attract the St Mary's St type thankfully. Sadly, it has a dearth of good drinks and these can be quite expensice.

Food is good though and have some very friendly staff.

The Pen and Wig, Cardiff

The only good thing about the pub is its very large beer garden but it gets packed out most days in the summer. Not enough room inside when the weather is bad.

The food is average but does have some nice ales which change regularly. They do have quiz night but I wouldn't recommend it.

Avoid this if you don't like students.

The Gatekeeper, Cardiff

One of the better Wetherspoons in Cardiff. Plenty of space and always a grand selection of ales. Can get rather busy at times, especially in its location opposite the Milennium Stadium.

Dempsey's, Cardiff

This pub gets quite busy in the evenings on weekends as it stays open until 2am. Luckily there's usually a really good crowd there; none of the revolution crowd or stag/hen weekends that have taken over Cardiff in recent years. Like one of the other reviewers pointed out, when it's quiet it is rather grim and I wouldn't bother in the day. The place has become rather shabby in the last year or two and could really do with a lick of paint. The toilets are in a bad state too and aren't cleaned through the night.

That said, a night in Dempsey's is always good fun. Don't expect any posh beers, the usual Brains crowd pervades.

If you're into jazz, there are some great acts upstairs put on by a lovely dedicated couple. Plenty of super local acts for a reasonable price and a nice atmosphere.

33 Windsor Place, Cardiff

I rarely go to this pub but always enjoy it when I do. It doesn't get a huge amount of business in the evenings but does a healthy lunchtime trade. Not surprising as they serve some really delicious meals. It has a pleasant outdoors area to the rear and nice seating indoors. They also have a small room upstairs which takes bookings; great for a large family meal.

A little devoid of atmosphere in the evening due to slow trade but nice for a quiet drink. Which can be pricey! I paid 3.95 for a pint of Peroni.
