Ye Olde Mitre Inne, Barnet

popped in for a quick one, quite some time since the last visit (ah the joys of internment by children). We were pleasantly surprised, fruit/games machines were gone and just a nice quiet atmosphere will definitely come back again

David's Place, Aldeburgh

well went here a few weeks ago - on a friday night, it was very busy and in the back yard there was an impromptu jam with a flute, drum, ukelele(well something similar) and improvised beer keg. It was a great night

The White Lion Hotel, Aldeburgh

well i have been for a drink here in the bar - mainly prior to a drink. This is a premises fronting as a pub but really is a hotel and a restaurant. It'sinnocuous, tedious and expensive i really wouldn't bother as it just doesnt have the feel of a pub yet rather a hotel bar

The Mill Inn, Aldeburgh

This is a relaxed easy going pub, i would suggest for the over 50's but is has a nice atmosphere and no rowdiness. I was intrigued by the woman with the cockatoo sat in the bar. We had reason to stay overnight recently, nice room (not ensuite though - but reflected in the price), nice breakfast (although the miniature sausage were a surprise. Forgive me for lack of info re beer - i drink wine - but its a nice atmosphere and non=threatening

The Cross Keys, Aldeburgh

have been going in periodically, and its not much different. This pub lives on the fact it is extremely old, but its tedious and not really much fun. Haven't bothered risking the food for at least three years or so as the menu hasn't changed and that worries me. Harry the barmaid left some years ago and she was the only fun bit of the pub - though she still works in the high street. I think its a shame this should be a great pub but the landlady/absent landlord really let it down - surly, miserable and overpriced wine

David's Place, Aldeburgh

well here i am again - i should really stop writing as its always the same. The hippy couple here again - discovered the male half is a paperboy as spotted him one morning - yes im getting away from the point but seeing as they are a permanent fixture. The sixties music tonight is great, i have wifi here (only place in aldeburgh),Again i just can't stress the relaxed atmosphere here - almost the feel and look of a french bar/cafe. I still love it

The Dolphin Inn, Thorpeness

well we popped in around a month ago - and the usual landlord and lady were not there - dont know if they have left - but to be honest they werent terribly chatty or welcoming in anycase. We ordered food and drink and again my opinion hasnt changed. It still has no atmosphere as there are NO LOCALS. But its clean, the food is good - and to be honest the last entry - they charge aldeburgh prices and seeing as there isnt too much competition in thorpeness they can get away with it. It's not a pub to spend any longer than your meal in as it has no soul.

David's Place, Aldeburgh

in dps now - it is easter friday, its heaving and its a hoot - the usual crown are in the ageing hippy couple are here - their permanent haunt - the music is loud but talkable and the usual mix of old to young - i can't recommend it enough - its a great people watching bar

Joe McCollams Bar, Cushendall

i waited for several months to go to this pub and once i got there it was fabulous. You walk in and you think the bar of at least 12' x 12' is a tad small - but then walk through and find a multitude of rooms with roaring fires. On a Friday and Saturday night local musicians pop in and play different instruments in different rooms. The night we went in we even had a local farmer burst into song. i knew it was going to be good and it certainly provided what i wanted. GO GO GO you will find a real irish welcome (cripes i sound corny) and something i havent found so far in another northern irish pub - it was great. usual choice of beverages but the atmosphere is incredible

Weavers Bar, Barnet

reiterating what others have said. Its a jekyll and hyde pub. One side (alas unpatronised) is almost your trendy wine bar and looks lovely the other is like a jd wetherspoon with like clientele. It looks great from the outside but on the 9 occasions i have been in i have always asked why i bothered afterwards. Its naff, its populated by it appears the locals from Mays Lane rather than the better side of the tracks

The Rose and Crown, Carrickfergus

when i asked my husband to take me to one of the worst pubs in carrick he took me here. Spit and sawdust. Made me smile that they could only provide half pint glass for wine - not that no glasses weren't clean just didnt have any need for any (perchance i am a posh bird for drinking wine from a wine glass). We went at christmas and laughed the whole night and amazingly managed to escape with no injuries. Dont go ladies and gents unless for a one off to see how the other side live

13 Mar 2008 00:39

The Joymount Arms, Carrickfergus

this is a real nice pub. Its mainly used by yoof at weekends but populated by alsorts during the rest of the week. Has a multitude of snugs with some tvs, some music, nice atmosphere.

the restaurant next door is damned good for carrickfergus and would recommend

The Marine Bar, Whitehead

never managed to find this bar open. If you didnt know this bar existed you would never find it, tucked down a residential side street with no signs. Apparently only open on weds fri and saturday night - and is believed owned by same licensee as whitecliff arms in whitehead

2 Mar 2008 12:45

The Whitecliff Inn, Whitehead

this could be a great pub, it is huge, has pleasant clientele, and no trouble. The back bar has plasma and is a sports bar and is populated by the younger drinkers, whereby the front bar is let down by plastic covered seats and cruddy patio furniture for tables and chairs. Saying that though its got a nice feel to it and is always welcoming. The barstaff are pleasant so a thumbs up

23 Feb 2008 21:37

The Royal Oak Bar, Carrickfergus

has been done up a couple of years ago and is basically a sports bar wtih plasma screens everywhere even in the gents toilet. Its always busy and no trouble but it just has no soul at all

23 Feb 2008 21:33

Millars Bar, Ballycarry

this could be a lovely pub = set in a very old village house - but in fact inside it is kind of like drifting back to a seventies cafe with cruddy seating and strange clientele

23 Feb 2008 21:32

The Central Bar, Carrickfergus

this is a ghastly pub with ghastly clientele and ghastly food - avoid it at all costs

23 Feb 2008 21:30

The Millbay Inn, Islandmagee

it has shut down

20 Aug 2007 20:59

David's Place, Aldeburgh

ok so davids place has not been sold on as flats but is now owned by the same people who run the cabin(posh cafe in the high st) now providing free internet and wifi. Only wandered past since but am reliably informed by a regular that update of furniture is all thats changed - hoorah for dp's

23 Jul 2007 20:20

The White Hart, Aldeburgh

great atmosphere though horribly smoky, good selection of live music - not much seating and quite small - in fact on warmer days many sit outside the front of the pub.

31 Jan 2007 16:05

The Dolphin Inn, Thorpeness

Has fairly new landlord and lady - a huge chunk of the beer garden has been sold off to build four houses which now overlook the rear of the pub - saying that still a huge garden and not spoiled. The food is actually quite pleasant and improved - i believed they finally managed to get a chef - after some time looking for one and the standard of food has gone up and is not obviously microwaved.

Only pity is there isn't an atmosphere - due i suppose to a transient clientele and being such a huge pub - if you do want some kind of atmosphere go to the small snug on the left with the pictures of the pub before it burnt down and was rebuilt.

31 Jan 2007 16:03

The Mill Inn, Aldeburgh

We went to this pub a few times last year - new licencee's who are extremely pleasant - and the chap is also the chef and responsible for the food which is quite pleasant and reasonably priced. He also happens to be a member of the lifeboat crew (hence the patronage by said crew. The pub is small and cosy and the landlord/lady very pleasant and accommodating - i would recommend

31 Jan 2007 15:56

The Cross Keys, Aldeburgh

Again been going to aldeburgh for 7 yrs and this was my first port of call the first time. This was a great pub, with good food. Alas the food is now cruddy and second rate. But for us its the hot gossip in regards to the the licensees - which i wont go into here, but suffice it raises an eyebrow and makes my husband return.

This is a kids pub despite being the oldest pub in the village

David's Place, Aldeburgh

Been going to Aldeburgh for 7 yrs and only popped in here last two years. David has indeed passed and his daughter is now running the joint. Rumour has it has been sold on to be a rental home. This really is a dive but there is something so retro and comfy about the whole place, it just keeps drawing you back. The crowd are as diverse as you can get - a drunk hippy middle age chick who smokes herself to death to the local youth of the place - all chatting and having a great time. In fact last year - at the aldeburgh festival phil et gil played impromptu outside the bar - says it all

31 Jan 2007 15:48

The Square, Barnet

Revamped and renamed (King George public House) - also does Thai food, nicely done out with leather seats and plasma tvs - for some reason always empty in the day - and rowdy with bouncers on a friday and saturday night. The staff are none to pleasant to ladies with babies who briefly stop in their car parks in cars too.

27 Aug 2005 18:58

Ye Olde Mitre Inne, Barnet

This is a nice traditional pub - which though has a no smoking section - it makes no difference. They have started doing cheap food - though not tried it, drinks are averagely priced, but do a good deal on a bottle of wine.

27 Aug 2005 18:42

The Orange Tree, Totteridge

Family friendly pub - with no smoking section. Food is good, drink competitively priced - go there quite regularly.

27 Aug 2005 18:38

The Haven, Whetstone

A great restaurant, wine bar is over priced and seems to have a clientele which are reminsicent of the song - the oldest swinger in town.

27 Aug 2005 18:33

The Green Dragon, Barnet

You have to drive to this pub, which does a limited but great menu - its cosy and friendly and well worth a visit and particularly a meal.

27 Aug 2005 18:31

Ye Olde Monken Holt, Barnet

The monk has recently re-opened after refurbishment - a really rather pleasant extension to the rear. Has a smaller beer garden - and now is family friendly which it wasnt in the past. Friday and Saturdays the place is heaving often with live music and attracts the older crowd - so not rowdy. Food is not terribly good - but reasonably priced.

27 Aug 2005 18:23

Railway Bell, New Barnet

Large JD Witherspoons pub, cheap beer, cheap food - and i certainly would not recommend eating here - the food is dire. Fills up with kids on friday and saturday nights....

27 Aug 2005 18:19

The Builders Arms, New Barnet

I can only concur with the other comments - a friendly pub which incidentally welcomes dogs with open arms, two separate bars - which keeps us old fogeys apart from the younger generation. Drinks fairly priced and great friendly staff.

27 Aug 2005 18:17

The Wishing Well, New Barnet

This has been the litten tree, and now renamed the stable - to say this pubs clientele is rough as old boots would be an understatement - dont bother.
