The Fulford Arms, Fulford

We visited this pub which was just across the road from our holiday cottage on a Tuesday evening when they had a quiz night. It's not a huge pub and seems to attract a younger crowd (although the quiz night may have been the reason for this). During a break in the quiz proceedings, everyone was welcome to help themselves to free bread, bacon and scrambled egg - never seen that before in a pub but nearly everyone dived in! (Maybe it's a Northern thing)?

The lone barmaid was very friendly. We had a great evening here. Apparently they have 2 new chefs starting in May so if we return to York, we'll definitely check it out again. The Real Ale loyalty card scheme is a good idea.

The Bay Horse, Fulford

Whilst on a short break to York we discovered the Bay Horse just down the road from where we were staying. we were looking for a nice pub with home cooked food and this certainly didn't disappoint. It's a lovely little pub. The food was very reasonable priced, extremely tasty, huge portions and well worth the visit. The barmaid was lovely, very friendly and nothing would have been too much trouble for her. Highly recommended on every level.
Well done Bay Horse!

The Golden Fleece, York

Definitely a pub for tourists who believe in the hauntings. We found it okay as a drinking pub but the food was awful and the barmaid became rather surly when we dared to point this out. For a pub that boasts 4 chefs including one specialising in vegetarian food, it's truly disappointing.

Ship Anson, Portsmouth

We also went to this pub for lunch during our visit to the Historic Dockyard and what a great little find. The food was cheap, of really good quality and freshly cooked (and hot when it arrived at our table). The girl who served us (long dark hair, didn't get her name) was more than helpful and all of the bar staff were really friendly, chatty and happy in their work. I could do with a local like this. Loved it.

Cock O' The North, Bel Bar

We came across this pub by accident a couple of years ago before the re-furb and liked it then. The patio area is lovely in the summer and the food was really quite good (i did't see any sign of microwaving then).

We went back last weekend and wow! what a difference! The interior has been completely re-modelled. The lighting and soft furnishings really make it quite plush - loads of cushions everywhere too. The food and service was excellent. It's so nice to find somewhere that cares about it's food, customers and reputation. We were lucky to get a table as it filled up really quickly. I think it'll be somewhere where you'll have to book in advance. Definitely not a drinking pub - the accent is on the food, Well done!

Duke of Edinburgh, Wood Green

Love this pub. It IS a hidden gem Strongers and I hope it stays that way - stuff 'Spoons (sorry, "Spouters" - like the change of name makes any difference), the Goose, the Anglers, Tollgate and the Nelson. I agree about the Scottish manager but I'm not sure he's there any more - haven't seen him on my recent visits. It seems to have 3 or 4 older Turkish men doling out the orders (Sopranos spring to mind ha) but the back garden area is the only place we go - great heating, covered areas, backgammon boards, hopefully more live music and fantastically fresh food that's really inexpensive and in large portions. I've said too much - I want it to stay a hidden gem.... I can't fault it though :-)

The Earl of Camden, Camden

OK if you like a round of a pint of Fosters and Stella at 6.65 and crap, refried food - they make Wetherspoon's food look good (and that's saying something) - substandard and not good given previous experience - nip up the road on the same side instead for better prices and better food!

The Common Room Bar and Lounge, Dungannon

Had a great night in here last September when Twister were playing (twisterbanddotcom). Good pub for live music - check it out.

we want more rock!!!!

The Occasional Half, Palmers Green

This place is busier at the weekends but they've noticeably lost many of the previous regulars. I'm no shrinking violet but some of the new regulars are a bit loud and lary and swagger around as if they own it. There's more of a thuggish air to it which is a shame. The stench of ammonia from the men's loos is rank - and the "ladies" should be re-named! Hopefully it will improve..... Bar staff are really nice.

The Marlborough Head, Marble Arch

After a really hot day shopping in the West End we were gasping for a cold pint and happened across this little gem. Yes, it's a bit of a novelty with the goth/gargoyle decor but it's a lot better than some pubs I've been in. We had burgers (as it was easier to stay put and have another beer) and very nice they were too. The boyfriend had beef burger - nicely cooked, I had falafel burger - again very nice, very tasty. Food was A1 really - good size portions, freshly cooked, freshly prepared. Couldn't fault it to be honest. We'll definitely head for here again if we're forced to do another shopping trip in the dreaded West End.

The Great Northern Railway Tavern, Hornsey

OMG! Went in here for a quick pint prior to going for a meal across the road in the Spanish restaurant. We walked in and very rapidly did a quick-about-turn. What a DUMP! It stank of stale smoke depite the smoking ban many months ago. It was a shadow of it's former self many years ago - a real disgrace from the days when it used to have live bands. I really hope it closes down and either re-opens as a successful live musc pub or..... gets turned into a block of falts. Quite frankly this is a pb that can only be dscribed as one whorelies on sad old male drunks and benefit single parent mothers on benefits - such a shame to have to make a living ouf of these sad sad people

Interan,
I don't drink in the Salisbury and I've reported you for removal - I feel you have targetted me purely because you are friendly with the owners - yet I have posted my findings as an unbiased customer

My point was that the comment below was ignored and mine selected from BITE and taken and added to the Garden Ladder's website. I DO think that is cheeky and I stand by my opinion but I really don't want to argue the point on here as that's not what this website is about.

I used the link to go to the website and would have been happy to add a further comment on there had it been possible.

"What a pretentious bar this is, pretends to be a freehouse but is nothing more than a jumped up wine bar with the usual suspects.
Food is small, over cooked, and overpriced for what there is,
The Salisbury serves better food and beer.
The staff are arrogant and ill mannered, the worst of whom turned out to be the owner."

The Queens Head, Harringay

I see it's re-opened (blimey)! I thought the same as you t-sean - more flaming flats but seems we were both wrong - so far anyway. Not been in there yet but there's an over 21's with ID rule and it's under new management. I'll venture in soon and hopefully will be grateful it's remained a pub!

The Occasional Half, Palmers Green

I agree with you London 28 regarding the landlord. He greeted us at the door last Saturday evening, chatted with a few guys outside, came in, stood drinking at the bar on his own and when it got busy, he buggered off upstairs and left the barmaid completely on her own. It was really busy but hats off to her, she was a little gem working so hard to clear the tables once she'd served all the guys standing round the bar. it's a lot busier these days but I don't reckon it's down to the guvnor's poeple skills by any means.

28 Jun 2008 00:15

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

Seems to have picked up again lately. Quite busy early evening but dies down again after 8ish. Food not as good as before and menu still more or less the same a year later. Agree with comments below on the owner's wife.

Very quiet when we visited - menu somewhat limited and very average. Disappointing and dead.

Not a great ad when you see the manager and staff sitting in the pub eating KFC!!!

30 Mar 2008 16:10

Yates's Wine Lodge, Wood Green

I heard yesterday that it's been closed. No great loss but another pub gone in the area - there won't be any left soon!

These are all gone now:
The Litten Tree
The Nightingale
O'Rafferty's (formerly The Fishmongers)
The Freemasons

and O'Connor's freehouse in Palmers Green

No big deal about some of them as they'd become rundown but when is someone going to open a decent pub in this area????

29 Mar 2008 17:10

Goose, Wood Green

Went in there last Saturday after reading the 2008 comments here about new managers and cleaning - it still had an acrid stench of ammonia which is enough to make you move on fairly quickly. I didn't see anyone eating there so that's probably why....

5 Mar 2008 21:52

The Wishing Well, Palmers Green

great little pub - didn't see any care in the community on any of our visits there (unless you meant us hahaha) and there were plenty of women - maybe you're just too fussy "anonymous".

Haven't been to the one in N12 - any good London28?

4 Feb 2008 00:15

Whole Hog, Palmers Green

Well done becky! Too many pubs closing down and being replace by flats. Any chance of you doing food -and for us veggies too?

4 Feb 2008 00:05

Goose, Wood Green

Went in here this evening for a pint or 3 but we were driven out by the permeating smell of the men's loos wafting over the back part of the pub.

29 Dec 2007 23:57

Yates's Wine Lodge, Wood Green

Third recent visit where we popped in for a few drinks and a bite to eat and third consecutive visit where the "chef" has decided to bugger off early despite us checking what time food is served before we ordered our drinks. Hopefully it wil close down soon and some other enterprising pub will take over with decent food which is exaclty what this area needs. Wood Green is such a run down chavvy dump - and it's getting worse - if that's possible!

22 Dec 2007 21:37

Spouter's Corner, Wood Green

Doyle
Contact head office - I did and got a result (albeit for another Wetherspoon's branch) but the Wood Green one is notorious for rude & lazy staff - and managers - and being short changed too!

25 Nov 2007 01:09

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

Went in here last week and it was really dead. We had one drink and left. It's not the same as it was when I originally posted on here.

Also, I think it's really cheeky that the Garden Ladder has pinched the best comments from here to put on their own website. Why don't they design their website so that people can post comments directly on there or are they too selective?

Spouter's Corner, Wood Green

breg1234

and after this review in July 2007 you still went back? sheesh! dunno what flooding BITE with the same posts for so many Wetherspoon's pubs is going to do though - try anger management classes

The Sheepwalk, Leytonstone

atmosphere gone down hill since the sarcastic irish bar staff left, and you don't see many of the regulars that use to drink there, nowadays. the lager tasted like it was past its sell by date the last time i went in, the toilets as ever are in a right state at nights. music quite good though prefer when they use to put it upstairs and give us a choice whether to go up and watch it or not. having said all this you can always get served and i would rather pay an extra 60p per pint than stand in a queue with all the kids in wetherspoons just up the road....no, don't get me started on wetherspoons.

What else did you expect? It's Wetherspoon's for god's sake! No self respecting person hands over their hard earned wages to THEM!

The Nelson, Wood Green

Passed it this evening en route and yes, the paint job is unbelievably awful - puke insporing in fact. it was really bare and hardly anyone in there. maybe the interior desginer is colour blind, actually no, just blind.

27 Aug 2007 23:16

Henleys Bar, Wood Green

Was a lovely little pub but not so now. You feel as if you've walked into somewhere you shouldn't have as the locals definitely give you the "once over" on your way to the bar.

27 May 2007 17:49

Yates's Wine Lodge, Wood Green

Not too bad for a couple of pints on a Saturday afternoon having braved the shopping crowds. Much better than the bloody awful Wetherspoon's and the Goose. I do agree with previous comments about pulling the whole place down and starting again. It could be such a successful corner if someone put their thinking head on and designed it to keep the troublemakers away. The constant police presence just about says it all, doesn't it?

26 May 2007 00:24

The Ranelagh, Bounds Green

A year later and I still like going to the Ranelagh. We mostly sit outside as it's such a nice area to relax in. Becoming more popular and lots of families come in - the garden area can be full of kids roaming and exploring but they all get scooped up early evening and taken home for bedtime. Food still not great in terms of size of portions and lack of veggie choice. They don't serve the standard lagers any more - no carling for lightweights like me or stella for my partner. Not mad about the ones they sell now so we've wandered down Green Lanes recently to a new pub with better food and our choices of drinks.

26 May 2007 00:09

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

A nice little find and a very welcome one too as the Green Lanes/Wood Green area is sadly lacking in decent pubs with good freshly cooked food and a more grown up clientele. Have been there quite a few times now as they serve really lovely food. The only downside is the lack of vegetarian choice on the menu but hopefully that will improve (I'm getting sick of the pasta dish and the risotto altough both are lovely - it would be nice to have a wider choice). Background music is really good too. This is my new local!

26 May 2007 00:00

The Rose and Crown, Stoke Newington

This has always been a great pub with great food. It was my local for years until I had to move so can't visit as often as i would like. I wish there was pub like this in my neighbourhood - without the sports on telly though - that does spoil it.

PS: anonymous who thinks "Stokey" is a 'pet name' that has only been adopted by the middle class fools that have infiltrated the area - what nonsense. I lived in "Stokey" from 1982 and always remember it being called that......

26 Nov 2006 20:28

The Occasional Half, Palmers Green

not a bad wee pub - barstaff friendly, customers okay too :o)

25 Nov 2006 22:27

Mannions, Wembley

Nearly went in there as we wanted something to eat and a couple of pints before Wembley gig. Opened the door to go in and were faced by a brightly lit, broken down pub with ashtrays spilling their contents over broken down tables surrounded by broken down scruffy men. It looked so bad that we didn't even bother to put a foot over the threshold - looked very scary. Went to the Greyhound across the road and didn't stay there too long either - what is it with the pubs near Wembley Arena - don't they want the business? This pub should be shut down and re-furbed for sure.

25 Nov 2006 21:50

The Greyhound, Wembley

Felt like a piece of tumbleweed could've blown past us when we walked in as everyone in the place turned to look at us. Beer was okay, food we didn't try. Staff looked like they didn't want to be there. Customers were obvioulsy locals and acted like the lower end of food chain (really) and both gents toilets out of action so men were using the one of the 2 ladies loos. Both sets of ladies toilets were unbelievably filthy with no tissue or hand towels. Very hasty exit down the road to Blue Check Cafe bar who did superb food and drink - go there if you're going to a gig in Wembley arena.

25 Nov 2006 21:45

Monaghan's Tavern, Wood Green

It was a successful thriving pub when it was the Jolly Butchers. I'm Irish and went in here a while ago (just because we were passing and decided to try it out). There were 2 women there - both drunk and acting like trailer trash. I ordered 2 pints and one of the women said "I don't know where she's gone but I'll serve ya"! There were no other customers. A man joined them shortly after and they sat staring at us - so we drank up and left never to return. It's unbelievably awful and an embarrassment to the Irish!

8 Sep 2006 11:31

Goose, Wood Green

Follow up to my previous posting:
10/10 for perseverance from the area manager, Rory (shan't post his full name) - very courteous, very keen to put things right - spent quite a time with me on the phone gathering comments but despite this, the standards of this pub have gone downhill +++! He sent me an invitation/vouchers to try the food again. We were on holiday when he initially tried to contact me but he didn't give up so well done for that. We called in again today and found sticky tables, vinegar flies hovering around our table, no toilet tissue in 5 of the ladies loos (on a quiet Wednesday afternoon). The bar staff all seemed to be Polish (no problem with that) but, mostly couldn't understand very basic Ebglish. My partner literally had to point to the menu in his endeavour to order food and then it took 3 off them discussing amongst themselves before pressing the buttons on the till to submit the order. One managed to say that the prices on the menus were wrong, they had gone up but "they couldn't be bothered to amend them" ("they" being Mitchells and Butler) so we paid more than the menu stated but didn't receive a receipt!?!

I won't have another rant but I won't go back to this pub again. It's mostly full of dirty, broken down alcoholics and benefits people who spend their time scrounging off the other decent customers who look like they actually work for a living - a disgrace of a pub but in keeping with the other Wood Green chavvy dumps. Sorry Goose but you did it to yourself.....

21 Jun 2006 20:42

The Ranelagh, Bounds Green

I love this pub. I never knew it before the refurb but the pricey drinks are worth it as it keeps most of the chavs and all of the riff raff away. Tonight we decided to sample the food there. The prices are a bit steep for what you actually get and being a regular at the Bejoy Indian a few doors away, I can only say that the Ranelagh actually sends people there as their portions are absolutely abysmal with NO vegetarain option on their regular menu. I had the haddock fishcakes - 2 smallish cakes on a spoonful of wilted spinach, 6 "home made" (and pretty tasteless) wedges with a lemon wedge. 8 quid - and I still considered going to Bejoy. My partner had the 8 oz burger with 6 wedges - a few pence under 8 squiddlies. He was still hungry.

The BBQ is also overpriced - he could have had a burger with salad leaves from that for a fiver. Go to Bejoy after a few pints in the Ranelagh. I still love the Ranelagh but won't eat there again. I'd give a 10/10 rating if the food was better. Service IS slow these days but hey, it's a sight better than Wetherspoon's!

17 Jun 2006 21:07

O'Rafferty's, Wood Green

Definitely closed now. Bought by Fairview (more matchbox housing for more chavs probably). Damn shame that, given it's history. What's happening with Wood Green pubs? The Litten Tree, the Nightingale, O'Rafferty's - all went into steep decline and are no more. Charlie Brown's used to be a lovely little pub when O'Rafferty's was the Fishmongers but maybe I'm being too nostalgic here *sigh*.

Not a decent restaurant in the area either! *even bigger sigh*

Wood Green's such a dive these days - no class - sorry - didn't mean to rant - I'll shut up now :o)

(it's true though)

11 Mar 2006 20:56

Goose, Wood Green

Went in here this evening with my partner - yes, drinks are fairly cheap but don't go near the food. I ordered veggie lasagne, which comes with garlic bread (as it always does no matter where you go) and a side order of chips (preferable to garlic bread as the garlic bread is inevitably variable in "quality" with pubgrub). My partner ordered a burger with chips. Both meals were almostcold on arrival and stone cold before we were halfway through the meal which was somewhat hurried due to the fact it was nearly cold on arrival. The lasagne was microwaved so that the edges were actually dried out to unbelievable proportions (microwaved more than once methinks) rendering the only edible part to the very centre of the dish. The garlic bread was part of a dried out burned baguette and was pretty good to do a drum solo on the table (demonstrated there and then to my partner). The burger was well overcooked (solid, very very solid) and was really plain and dry. Chips - cold. No salad, no onions - bugger all really. We struggled as we were hungry (any port in a storm syndrome) and gave up - it was truly awful. We did stop by the bar to tell the manager who was very gracious and apologetic. She offered us a refund and apologised again. We declined the refund as we didn't want to look like people who eat half a meal and go for the refund deliberately - customer feedback should be more important if the place actually wants to subscribe to some kind of quality (I hate to admit it but the food was actually worse than Wood Green Wetherspoons and the Tollgate and believe me, they take some beating but at least the manager wasn't rude and uncaring in the Goose - in fact she was lovely and said she would speak to the "chef").

Rating for the pub is good, for the food - abysmal, abominable (a couple next to us seemed to struggle with the veggie bangers and mash - it did look truly revolting). Rating for the manager 10/10!

11 Mar 2006 20:41

The Fox Public House, Palmers Green

definite improvement but the menu has bugger all for veggies so that's a big minus. Live band tonight called Short Tempers - okay for a cover band but the lead guitarist was also the lead vocalist - he's good on lead guitar but the bass player was the better vocalist so swop them over and it could be a good band. Shame the 2 fat girls dancing spoiled the view! 5 doormen/bouncers trying to look hard but made me laugh in their attempts to look hard - chewing gum vigorously only signals guys on speed - most amusing. Fecking cold pub though....

1 Oct 2005 23:23

The Queens Hotel, Crouch End

used to be a great pub when it had live music - sadly no more - it's just a big dump now :o(

1 Oct 2005 15:28

The Railway Tavern, Crouch End

Visited the Railway last Saturday night -nothing like it used to be in the 80's. They've changed it from 2 bars to 1 big one now which really shows how badly it's doing as there's just a big pub with hardly anyone in it. There's a pool table now which spoils it but that's probably an attempt to draw people i. Never go back they say - and I won't. Alex and Jeanie would die if they saw it now.

1 Oct 2005 15:26

The Ranelagh, Bounds Green

sssshhhhhh...... stop telling everybody about it! I didn't know the pub pre-improvements. It's my new local and costs a bit more than most but it's worthwhile as it attracts the right age group/mentality which makes it "grown-up" and at last Wood Green pubs no longer exist for me (does a backflip).

One thing though - I tried the bbq - it is a wee bit pricey - a fiver for, well, not very much really - that's the only disappointment :o( Drop the price of this guys and you'll be perfect. No chance of a music licence I suppose.... (dreams on)

15 Sep 2005 20:07

Spouter's Corner, Wood Green

Sharpen up the service? Gawd, that would be a miracle! The service has always been bad here - even the managers (well, some of them) have been extremely rude when the staff have given you change of a tenner when you know you gave them a 20 note. Of course you don't get your money back... Complain about the food and you get patronised. Still, I have the comfort of knowing one of the arsey managers got sacked for stealing. Don't bother to complain to Head Office either - you get a bland letter saying they'll look into it - yeah, right.....

2 Sep 2005 18:19

The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay

MAD bar staff? Have they changed then? I visited once having read the comments on here. Yes it's old, yes it's grotty, the bar staff looked like they couldn't give a monkey's and the customers were nothing out of the ordinary - groups of friends getting pissed - not noticeably friendly to anyone outside their group. It's ok for a pint on the way past I suppose. We went there for the evening and left after a second pint *yawn*

31 Aug 2005 17:15

The Nelson, Wood Green

oh it's gone downhill so much. It's loud, horrible and completely characterless these days. Filling up with chavs and despite the new paint job on the outside, doesn't make you feel you want to stay for a 2nd pint. Still, it's in keeping with all the other dumps in Wood Green. There's nowhere without chavs or with good food.

17 Jul 2005 11:30

The Jolly Anglers, Wood Green

yes, they are trying but they still have a way to go. We tried it out again a couple of weeks ago (having been regulars in Caroline's days). We were put off by the mouthy fat bald guy throwing his weight around and acting as if he owned the pub. Quite a few council types getting drunk and keeping an eye on their shopping trollies - still very downmarket.... sad when you think of how it used to be

17 Jul 2005 11:24

The Waggon, Southgate

shame they don't put more effort into catering for veggies - how sick we are of being offered frozen spicy beanburgers. Very difficult to find a decent pub with decent veggie food these days - why? This is London in 2005! Even the heartiest of meat eaters enjoy a veggie meal.

22 May 2005 13:45

O'Rafferty's, Wood Green

it had lights on when I passed it last night..... no signs of demolition just yet

22 May 2005 13:15

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

Had my bag stolen in here on Thursday 28th April. According to the police, it's notorious for it! Happens all the time apparently! They could have put some notices up warning customers about this - the Wetherspoon's at the top of Wood Green has exactly the same problems. All the pubs in Wood Green have gone down the pan in the last 5 years. I'll have to move I think......

30 Apr 2005 11:41

Yates's Wine Lodge, Wood Green

Hard pushed to find chavs in Wood Green? You are joking!!! lol! The place is overrun with them!

4 Apr 2005 22:18

O'Rafferty's, Wood Green

It really has gone down the pan since Christmas. Last time I was in there was about 3 weeks ago. Dirty glasses everywhere (and I mean everywhere). 3 other customers + us 2 = 5 on total. Heard it's been sold and think it might be true.

Why are there no decent pubs in Wood Green anymore?

4 Apr 2005 22:02

The Mucky Pup, Angel, Islington

"please note - comments on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously".

So why are so many people offended by my comments? Surely the whole point of this site is to offer comments on what we have experienced - this is what I did so please people, just drop it now, enjoy your pub and stop using this site as a forum to get back at those whose opinions differ from yours.... okay? Good. :o)

10 Mar 2005 12:47

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

Fairly typical Wetherspoon's pub - takes ages to get served, food takes ages to arrive and isn't always properly cooked. I returned a beanburger that had been deep fried from frozen and was still cool in the middle - "they" weren't happy - ha!
Clientele - mostly broken down alcoholics who will always get served first as they SHOUT their orders at the barstaff - never mind the fact that you've just stood there for 10 minutes wondering if you're invisible....

11 Oct 2004 19:17

The Rat and Parrot, Camden

Limited seating and we had to wait quite a while for a table as we wanted to eat. (Big sofas with 1 person hogging one to herself).Eventually we had to settle for a table in the non-smoking area (there are always empty wasted tables in these sections). My partner ordered steak from the very limited menu - no steak.... I had the spicy beanburger - uninspiring offer for veggies as always - this had been deep fried to a crisp. Homemade chips were a pleasant surprise though. There just wasn't enough seating and the bar itself could easily have been greatly reduced in size so that it could accommodate a few more customers. Nice pub though and nice atmosphere though I doubt we'll be back due to limitations of seating and menu. Staff were very polite - but please don't call female customers madam - I hate that.

11 Oct 2004 18:57

The Mucky Pup, Angel, Islington

Take the (albeit lovely)dog away and what have you got?

We visited this pub after reading all the reviews below. It was cold, drab, brown gloss and blown vinyl. Seating was limited 3 people shared 2 sofas in front of a dead fireplace. The walls had cheaply framed photos that were uninspiring and unimaginative yes there were a few that werent photos of the dog. (Dog overkill to be honest - even the chain-pulls in the loos had dog bones on them).

The back room was given over to a pool table and dartboard so a trip to the loo meant waiting for the dart players to finish their turn as you have to cross the dart-throwing path and then the same for the pool players.

No tables were wiped down (very sticky too) or ashtrays emptied whilst we were there. Although there seemed to be an extensive menu on the chalk board on the wall, we felt the veggie options were limited (why do we veggies always get offered spinach and ricotta or quorn?). Strangely no steak on offer for non veggies and no nut roast advertised which disappointed me (part of the reason for our trip)!

We did get served immediately on arrival but no welcome not even a smile. It wasnt particularly busy and we stayed for about an hour no-one made any effort to speak to us let alone get to know us. We got the impression from the comments on here that it was a warm and lively place but sorry guys, the whole place had an atmosphere of depression maybe we just hit it on a bad night? (Took us an hour and 2 bus rides to get there so we made the effort).

Disappointing.

Green Dragon, Winchmore Hill

I mostly agree with Amanda but it did look like a pub that wasn't sure what it wanted to be what with mixture of the ethnic sculptures and Thai menu -was probably once an old English pub (orginal beams etc)so it felt like there was some kind of identity conflict going on. Menu wasn't great for veggies and the night we visited, the clientele were quite loud and rowdy. A pub with great potential but somehow got lost along the way.....

Whole Hog, Palmers Green

This is in the process (apparently) of changing back from a Wetherspoon's pub (amen to that) so the food menu was in transition from Wetherspoon's slop to a new one - can't be any worse than Wetherspoon's can it? Nice interior, gets busy on a Saturday night, friendly mixed crowd. I'll be back :o)

The Fox Public House, Palmers Green

Quite a nice interior, friendly bar staff. Been here several times but recent visits have put me off - there were a few loud and lary thug-types (who seem to be regulars there) gave the atmosphere a feeling of impending fights - hence the bouncers on the door I guess. Shame that.

BRB at The Gate, Alexandra Park

Several visits to this pub but haven't tried their pizza. Did find it took a long time to get served at the bar - wouldn't be my first choice for an evening out.

The Inn on the Green, Palmers Green

We visited this pub last night after reading the above comment. Very friendly bar staff, nice interior but unfortunately no music (maybe it's not regular) and they didn't serve food on Saturday nights.

The Nelson, Wood Green

It's my local too but the latest management change has taken away the character it had. The previous manager Jez got live music in (albeit briefly), the walls were plastered with music posters and both gave it character. Now it's been sterilised with magnolia paint and bright lights....might not be my local for much longer I'm afraid
