The Shoulder of Mutton, Castleford

An absolute classic pub. The sort of honest, working man and woman's boozer that are now too few and far between. Tetley Bitter and Tetley Mild on permanent with 2 changing guest ales, inc. the new Castleford brewery Revolutions.
All presided over by local character "Tetley" Dave.
If you've never been you're missing a treat.

Glassblower, Castleford

Cheap and relatively cheerful - it's a 'spoons, so the McDonalds of alehouses, but a decent enough choice of beers.
Just avoid the punters that have been there since breakfast time.

The Unicorn Inn, Selby

Recently become free of tie and getting some interesting beers in. This pub might be on the comeback trail!

The Black Bull, Ripon

Can't get excited about this place - tremendous location and a very nice building, but sullied with numerous fruit machines, tacky plastic menus, plasma screens and surly bar staff.
The one saving grace was that it had an Acorn Brewery guest ale on.

White Swan Inn, Richmond

A little tired and tatty, though with a choice of cask ales, including one from local micro Mithril.
Worthwhile to visit just for that.

The Holly Hill Inn, Sleegill

A friendly welcome was had here, along with excellent and reasonably priced food. A choice of 3 cask ales - nothing particularly interesting, other than the house beer, produced close by by Wensleydale Brewery.
The best of four pubs I sampled in and around Richmond.

The Black Lion, Richmond

Dull and uninspired, but does at least offer a couple of cask ales.

The Bishop Blaize, Richmond

It's tough to find a decent pub in Richmond town centre if, like me, you are seeking an opportunity to drink quality cask ale in a comfortable, welcoming environment. This place has at least made an effort to appeal to the cask ale drinker by having two pumps on (serving Old Hooky and Landlord on my visit).
That said the blue lights, pumping tunes, pool table, fruit machines and 4 cocktails for a tenner unfortunately seems to attract a clientele that undoes this good work. My over-riding memory of this place will be of a coven of four hefty lasses, displaying pounds of wobbling flesh, supping cocktails, whilst trying to appeal to the local menfolk using a combination of intimidation, graphic language and the promise of an accommodating, yet frightening evening of congress.
I drank my well-kept and reasonably priced Landlord swiftly while studiously avoiding eye contact with all and sundry - not an experience I'd want to repeat!

The Chequers Inn, Ledsham

Very attractive pub, externally and internally. Cosy selection of rooms to hide away in. Good selection of beers, well kept - but not cheap!
Food also of high quality and with prices to reflect that. This is maybe not an everyday pub, unless you are on a Leeds solicitor's salary, but an essential visit for a traditional pub lover. Recommended.

Blacksmiths Arms, Naburn

Surprised there are no reviews for this place - it's always busy when I go. Admirably it seems to be the hub of the village, offering a variety of services to the locals. The beer is pretty good and the pizzas worth trying if you're hungry. Popular for Sunday lunches. Worth a try.

The Black Bull, South Milford

Decent pub - good selection of real ales. Strange atmosphere though, feels like a town centre pub, even though it's in the middle of a village. Nevertheless, should I find myself in South Milford I always like to call in here.

The Cross Keys, Hillam

Roomy pub with a quieter front room. Decent ales available - sampled the Landlord the last time I was there. The larger room caters mostly for diners - it seemed rather quiet last time I was there, but perhaps this is a function of the size of the place as opposed to any comment on quality.

The Fox and Pheasant, Hemingbrough

Uninspired.

27 Apr 2010 11:46

The Crown Inn, Hemingbrough

A choice of real ales. Roomy comfortable pub in the middle of the village. Worth a look if your passing.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Hambleton

Food ok - beer ok - a couple of real ales usually available. Obviously being run on a tight budget as bar staff double as waiters, great when you've just arrived, gagging for a pint and the poor lad is down in the kitchen carrying back four plates of food and assorted sauces and condiments.
Still, I suppose one should be grateful it's still operating.

27 Apr 2010 11:38

The Red Lion Inn, Hambleton

Not particular exciting - one real ale (John Smiths Cask) which is not one of my favourites. On the positive side, the place is clean and tidy and easy to park outside. That's about all the enthusiasm I can muster.

The George and Dragon, West Haddlesey

My experience of this pub is not so negative as others. The six or seven visits I've made have been ok. The ale is kept well and there is always a choice, although their house pint is well worth sampling. Yes it's small and yes, it's frequented by regulars who dominate interaction with the bar staff - I'd also agree that the food offering is nothing special, but generally it's a pleasant enough place to spend an hour or two.

The Jug Inn, Chapel Haddlesey

A nicely located pub, recent changed hands. Previous vists were enjoyable, choosing from a limited supply of real ales accompanied by good pub grub style food.
The new owners appear to be offering more choice on the ale front, along with a more ambitious menu - it bodes well and I look forward to more visits.

27 Apr 2010 11:24

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Burn

High quality pub. 4 consistently well kept guest ales plus 2 permanents. A wide choice of other drinks for the non-real ale drinkers. Food three nights a week is good value and enjoyable in a pub grub style. The pub is nearly always busy and illustrates if you offer the right thing then the pub trade is still viable. Well worth a visit if you've never been.

The Fox, Thorpe Willoughby

The only pub in a largish village, therefore tries to be all things to all people. As it's quite a roomy place they can almost pull it off. A choice of real ales including Theakstons at a bargain price (2.20 at the time of writing). Very good value food served with generous portions. Worthy of support.

27 Apr 2010 11:14

The Wadkin Arms, Osgodby

Selected as a Pub of the Season by CAMRA some time ago - they do offer some quality real ales. On the occasions I've visited it's been surprisingly rowdy for a village pub and the layout of the building has irritated me. Illogical perhaps, but that's what personal reviews are all about! Decent beer though.

27 Apr 2010 11:10

The Ferry Inn, Cawood

An attractive pub tucked away down a narrow street in this historic village. Recent past has seen some ups and downs at the pub, but it warrants support. Good quality guest ales are offered and on the occasions I've tried the food it's been ok. Worth a try.

27 Apr 2010 11:06

Jolly Sailor Inn, Cawood

Pleasant pub located in the village centre with very little parking. Adequate beer and basic food offered. Not somewhere to make a special trip to visit, but if you're passing and thirsty you could do worse.

27 Apr 2010 11:03

The Black Swan, Wistow

Nicely located pub in a pleasant village. Unfortunately the pub has at some point been "improved" or modernised, which does absolutely nothing for its character. Beer and food ok, but overall emotion was one of disappointment.

27 Apr 2010 11:00

The Rose and Crown Inn, Selby

CLOSED

27 Apr 2010 10:41

The Albion Vaults, Selby

Beers from the Old Mill Brewery in Snaith - therefore, you can get a decent pint. A two room pub with a bit of character, that caters for the slightly more mature market in the town. Not bad, one of only three pubs in the town I'd feel happy taking my mother in law to.

27 Apr 2010 10:40

The New Inn, Selby

Half decent pub, you can get a hand pulled pint of fair quality and it's relatively clean and tidy. Far from perfect, but in a town singularly lacking in good pubs, this is one of the few I can step into without a sense of overwhelming foreboding.

27 Apr 2010 10:32

Cochranes Wharf, Selby

Making a concerted effort to stock decent ale, but it remains to be seen whether those efforts will be supported by the local clientele. Whenever I go it seemed to attract the type of customer who nurses half a lager and stands out by the front door having a smoke, gazing blankly at life passing them by.

27 Apr 2010 10:27

The Abbey Vaults, Selby

Handy for Morrisons....other plus points are difficult to pinpoint.

27 Apr 2010 10:24

Three Swans, Selby

Very little to recommend it - maybe call in to occupy the time whilst waiting for your Chinese or Indian takeaway from the restaurants opposite, otherwise, what's the point?

27 Apr 2010 10:22

The Griffin, Selby

Town centre drinking warehouse catering for the youthful masses, with mass produced swill on tap.
If that's your thing then great, it's cheap too. If you are more discerning then keep on walking.

27 Apr 2010 10:20

The Bay Horse Inn, Selby

Patronised by tired and emotional locals who have seen better days - much like the pub itself and the town it resides in.
Had a passable pint of John Smiths, but left before i got too affected by the overpowering sense of gloom and sadness.

27 Apr 2010 10:18

The Londesborough Hotel, Selby

An enviable position by the Abbey - has every chance to be the best place in town. That it isn't is indicative of its apparent desire to appeal to the lowest common denominator. All pubs in Selby town centre appear to wish to cater to the lager swilling youth market and this place is no different. Characterless, soulless, staffed by uninterested, uninvolved youngsters. A shame - could and should be so much better.

27 Apr 2010 10:14

The Cricketers Arms, Selby

Sam Smiths pub, therefore cheap and adequate if you find Sams ales palatable. Quite a roomy place on the high street. One of the better places in a town struggling for decent pubs.
