Pitcher and Piano, Hitchin

Oh dear god!

Highlander, Hitchin

Good, home cooked food, but the menu has pretty much stayed the same for two or three years! They also have too many beers on - they aren't selling them fast enough to keep them in good condition, and the wine list could have a bit more choice on it.

Cromwell's Bar (at the Sun Hotel), Hitchin

It's closed isn't it?

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

Good choice of beers, lots of nice continental lagers (Paulaner is always a favourite for me) It is a bit pricey, but it has a good atmosphere.

The Strathmore Arms, St Pauls Walden

A wonderful pub, a step back in time, with excellent beer and brilliant value too. Talking to the Landlord, who has run various hostelries in Hitchin over the years (remember Assizes wine bar anyone?) the local Lord of the manor seems to have an enlightened approach to pub ownership, and knows it is a real asset for the community. Beautiful setting too, right in the woods.

The Rusty Gun, Hitchin

What a dissapointment! The Royal Oak has been transformed into "The Rusty Gun" Why the name change exactly? Anyway, that's the least of their problems; The menu promises so much, but delivers so little. I went with my family, and apart from having loads of dishes out of stock (is it some kind of boil-in-the-bag microwave restaurant maybe) the scallops were a tiny portion (two cut in half) the fish & chips was tiny, and above all, we waited ages for dishes to arrive. Really not impressed. To their credit, the beer is good, and the decor has been done really well, but the overall result is so unfortunate. No wonder so many pubs are closing.
