The Downside Inn, Downside

Quality, home-cooked food made to order at reasonable prices. The owners are obviously passionate about their food and the quality of the ingredients used. The pub also has a beer garden with views across to Glastonbury Tor.

The Holcombe Inn, Holcombe

Quality food though expensive, especially for lunch. Nice setting and lovely decor inside.

All day breakfast is the best in Hailsham.

The Railway Tavern, Hailsham

Friendly little pub. Nice beer garden.

The Kings Head, Lower Horsebridge

Has acquired good local reputation for its food especially the Sunday carvery. Our experience has always been of prompt, polite service and a good range of food and beverages. The owners appear to be ploughing their profits gradually back into refurbishing the pub. The current work being done on the garden and the need to refurb the bar toilets is the only reason I've given it an 8 and not a 10.

Best pub in the area.

Quirky, good beer, good food, very reasonable prices and efficient service.

The Kings Head, Lower Horsebridge

Under new management again!

Only popped in once since the change of management but the place has been spruced up, the bar moved and new carpets laid. The restaurant was looking much improved, though we didn't eat on this occasion.

The new owners are obviously putting much effort into refurbishing the place but still have work to do.

The beer and cider was good and we'll try the new menu out soon.

The Grenadier, Hailsham

Always found the bar staff quite welcoming. It's great for us smokers that the landlord has made a real effort to create a comfortable area with heating in the back garden.

My only criticism is that they don't sell any of the mainstream brands of cider such as Strongbow. If they did, I would go more often!

The Corn Exchange, Hailsham

The Corn Exchange is in the heart of Hailsham's High Street. The decor is modern and clean and a nice environment has been created by the landlord, particularly in the larger bar. There are two bars and an attached venue used as a nightclub at the weekends.

The pub attracts a mixed crowd in terms of age, from shoppers during the day to the younger crowd on a Friday/Saturday night.

Food is served all day and is generally reasonably priced compared to some pubs in the area. They do a cracking all day breakfast which also includes toast and a cup of tea. Lovely!

The May Garland, Horam

My husband and I visited the May Garland a couple of months ago. We were looking forward to a drink and spot of lunch after a morning walk on the Cuckoo Trail. The landlord was unwelcoming and only served us at all once he knew we'd be paying for food as well. On finally getting into the pub we found it was totally empty despite it being 1pm - never a good sign. With hand on heart I can say that the meals we had (lasagne and chilli) were the worst meals we've ever had in a pub in the UK. There are some really good pubs in the area - this is definately NOT one of them.
