We had the misfortune to enter the May Garland after a game of golf, about 8.30pm, four of us in good spirits in need of a little refreshment. I asked for two pints of Harveys, a Fosters and a soft drink. The woman behind the bar said nothing and walked out of the bar, we were slightly bemused but she was replaced by an incompetent who didn't know one pump from another. He started pulling the Harveys from the wrong pump, when corrected, continued using the correct one - no clean glass. The Harveys, when it arrived was cloudy and did not taste "right" and we complained. There were about four other people in the bar having a meal, one of which it transpired was the landlord. He took exception to our complaint, stormed behind the bar and pulled a 1/4 glass and said that there was nothing wrong with it, however, it was still cloudy. At this point he started getting angry and we could tell that he'd had "a few". I asked him to refund the entire round and we would leave. I told him that it was the weirdest pub I'd been in at which point he became aggressive, pointing fingers and we left. We will not make the same mistake again.

My husband and I visited the May Garland a couple of months ago. We were looking forward to a drink and spot of lunch after a morning walk on the Cuckoo Trail. The landlord was unwelcoming and only served us at all once he knew we'd be paying for food as well. On finally getting into the pub we found it was totally empty despite it being 1pm - never a good sign. With hand on heart I can say that the meals we had (lasagne and chilli) were the worst meals we've ever had in a pub in the UK. There are some really good pubs in the area - this is definately NOT one of them.

On reflection, Im never happy to judge a pub harshly. But the beer selection was rubbish theres no getting away from that. Six hand pumps only one working. And that serving Harveys Best. Not a bad beer, but Harveys Best is to Sussex what MasterBrew is to Kent. You get it everywhere.
The landlord simply couldnt care less that much was obvious. But the food was OK. Its just that having become something of an aficionado of pub grub lately, I have had a lot of pub meals which have been a lot better. This place is a victim of the rising standards of pubs in general its got a bit of a mountain to climb to reach the standard of the rest.

It could do better, and so in my book that rates 4/10. Sorry.
