Grouse and Claret, Rowsley

Most of the negative reviews on this site appear to be written by members of the same group. They appear to have been annoyed that they were told to keep the noise down. One reason I haven't camped for years. I used to run youth groups and I hated bringing the generally well-behaved young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to campsites where a bunch of over-privileged brats were effing and blinding all night. Cornwall during public school holidays anyone? Anyway the "Dragon" is no longer there and the pub has recently been re-furbished. Pity the prices have gone up too, but then so has the quality. The popularity of this place should tell its own story. I go for lunch there every other week and it's always full. Beer is Marstons and well kept. House wine is higher quality than in most pubs. The pub is still a bit lacking in character - I preferred it how it was. I should add the staff are excellent. Another reviewer said it was a sort of upmarket Wetherspoons. Well the food is cooked fresh for a start, and there is a proper chef. Wetherspoons food is designed to be all microwaved by unqualified staff. No comparison.

The Golden Lion, Frodsham

Acceptable pub with a bunch of regulars who hog the bar and some very irregular types who hover near the fireplace. Not a bad pint though, and you could do a lot worse if you have to drink in Frodsham

The Red Lion, Sandiacre

Good beer, and lovely food when I went. Basic but friendly local. Even as a stranger, people talk to you.

The Wendover, Brooklands

The Wendover used to be a druggies' paradise but it cleaned up its act and is now a good pub. Probably not for long for the reasons of the smoking ban losing all the business. BTW I grew up round there and I can assure you it has been in Manchester since the war, when the council bought all the land round there from Cheshire to build the large council estate. Bingo_Accent is wrong, as the other astute people have pointed out. Isn't it funny how when people are in the wrong they get to insulting the people who are right, rather than check the facts.

The Park, Wythenshawe

Modern pub with little character but serves quite a nice pint. Frequented by some heavy characters, but also some ordinary working people. More anonymous than the nearby Gardeners' Arms, but you would be better choosing the latter.

Gardeners Arms, Northern Moor

This used to be my local when I lived around there. I still pop in from time to time. It used to be a smoky local pub whose only positive was that they kept the druggies who freqent all the other pubs nearby well away. They served the worst pint of Robinson's bitter anywhere - absolutely no idea, and I had usually to drink the Carling. However recently it has changed hands and the last pint I had there (about two weeks ago) was excellent. I had to have a couple more in fact.
The smoking ban has hit this working man's pub very badly - I can't see it staying in business much longer. What a lesson - like a lot of breweries Robinsons never listened to the complaints of non-smokers who wanted to have a drink but would have liked the extractor fans switched on. Someone I know received a very insulting letter from the Robinsons brewery when she complained about this, at this very pub. So remember this Robinsons, when you insult your customers who are making a perfectly reasonable request, try to treat them politely, otherwise they will join the mass of non smoking drinkers and pressure for a law to ban all smoking. You idiots brought this on yourselves.

The Fox and Crown, Newark

Lovely beer served in the old fashioned way - one notch short of surly. But if you fancy a pint in Newark while you are waiting for a train, at least you won't get stabbed, which is more than can be said for some of the other pubs in Newark, such as the ones frequented by friends and relatives of the burglars shot by the famous and unjustly imprisoned farmer Tony Martin.
In my youth all pubs were like this, so it's a trip down memory lane. You will be absolutely guaranteed no-one will say "Have a nice day".

The Quarry Bank Inn, Timperley

I find this a very cliquey pub, but it's the best in the area.

The Jolly Butcher, Baguley

I grew up in this area so could be classed as "council house scum". Since the average price of a council house in the area exceeds most people's earnings by a factor five, probably best to leave such a comment for others to evaluate. This pub is fine, and while I only go in on rare occasions, it's better than many others in the area, and does not kick off the way some others do. Pubs in this area survive by encouraging ordinary working class people. Several pubs have disappeared because they allowed drug dealing rif raff in, and ordinary drinkers deserted them (Royal Oak being a prime example). So don't knock this pub - you could do a lot worse. And I don't like JWL either, but it's better than Hydes. Elsewhere in the country people would be glad of the choice of real ales you still get in South Manchester. You could always try the Gardeners Arms on Wythenshawe Road and get the worst pint of Robinsons in England, and be choked by cigarette smoke in a completely unventilated pub (they don't switch the fans on because it wastes heat, I think).

The Queens Arms, New Mills

I live near New Mills and have been in all the pubs. The Crown is right opposite the police station and the travellers' site, and if you know New Mills that makes the pub a relatively safe place to drink on a Friday and Saturday night. The town kicks off big time, so the Queens is your only bet. It might be lively at peak times, but it is quiet most of the week. Very well kept Robinsons bitter - nearly as good as at the brewery pub on Hillgate.

The New Soldier Dick, Furness Vale

The beer is good, but I and my partner had the most bizarre meal at this pub recently, accompanied by lots of cursing from the chef in the kitchen. It is friendly, but the menu is pretentious in the extreme, and the chef on the day we visited was just not up to it. There is a good Chinese restaurant next door, and I would recommend eating there, and having a pint in the pub.

The Lantern Pike Inn, Little Hayfield

Good food, reasonable prices, good beer, excellent setting. Hard to park, and you can only get there by car/bike realistically, although occasionally buses do pass by.

The Waltzing Weasel Inn, Birch Vale

Nice location and you can get very good food. Sometimes though it feels very cliquey, with local yuppies hogging the bar. Expensive and really a restaurant/hotel. The beer is well kept, but most people drink wine. There are more authentic pubs around the area.

Strugglers Inn, Lincoln

Small but friendly and full of character. Good lunchtime food, but if you are eating in Lincoln as a visitor I would recommend Brown's Pie Shop, on the hill up to the cathedral - on the other side of the castle from the Strugglers. I thought btw that it was called that after the workhouse rather than executions. Whatever it refers to bygone days.

The Pyewipe Inn, Lincoln

A dreary over priced pub in a very nice location. All you can say is that it is probably par for the course in Lincoln, apart from some nice pubs near the cathedral. It is better than the next pub along the Fossdyke navigation canal, the Woodcock, which is dreadful.
