The Hanover, Brighton

Overall this is a decent pub with very nice staff and fine selection of local ales (Langham, Dark Star, 1648 etc) at very good prices.

The food is OK too - nice stone-baked pizzas (though I find they can sometimes be under-cooked) and the roast is pretty good, though a bit thin on the meat side I find.

However, this pub should be re-named "The Crèche". I know that pubs need to make a special effort to welcome families but it has gone to an extreme at this boozer. Sundays are naturally the worst - you will find at least 20 young kids quite literally running about screaming when you visit. Early evenings on many weekdays are just as bad.

If you can stomach the screaming kids, I would reccommend this pub.

The Gladstone, Brighton

A decent pub that is often let down by complacent staff. My last three visits Ive had to ask the same bar girl to fill my pint properly. Good garden though and the food is usually pretty good too. On a good night, it can have a great atmos, on a quiet night, the bar staff seem more interested in chatting with their friends. Pretty pricey too.

Ship Anson, Portsmouth

My experience of this pub was pretty poor. The bar-boy was slow and borderline rude - he made it seem it was such an effort to serve us. Didnt bother to change a barrel, just said i should have something else.

The food we had was dire. The classy menu included a "pizza burger". Wow.

Locals were pretty rough too.

Aviod!

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

My girlfriend and I visited this pub on Sunday 21st March 2010 for Sunday lunch. Well, we wish we hadn't.

Let me tell you about my beef roast. It took an awful long time to arrive, and when it did I was not impressed. The meat was fine but the potatoes had no flavour at all and the yorkies were genuinely like polystyrene. The veg came as a side dish and consisted of the most horrid soggy courchettes, over-cooked borccoli and 4, yes count them, 4 slices of carrot.

The choice consisted of either roast beef or lamb - needless to say there was no vegetarian option so my girlfriend "enjoyed" a plate meat and gravy-less roast.

The choice of ale was not exactly wide either although the Hophead is lovely. For cider drinkers there is stowford press on tap.

On the plus side, there is a large playground if you have children and lots of tables.
