The Three Horseshoes, Barton under Needwood

Lovely traditional pub. Exceptionally friendly staff. Fantastic sunday lunches but limited times for food during the week. Good selection of beers. Small beer garden. Recommended...

Barton Turns Inn, Barton under Needwood

Canalside traditional pub. Friendly, attentive staff and they have an all day menu. Menu is basic and good value, excellent for a quick bite to eat. Good beers.

The Royal Oak, Kings Bromley

Just been done up. More of restaurant than pub. Friendly staff, OK food. Reasonable beer garden. All in all recommended...

The Middle Bell, Barton under Needwood

I have already posted info on this pub but wanted to describe more recent service which has been somewhere between poor and average. The food varies between quite good and good. The decor and comfort factor of the place is still modern and pleasant.

However, I am fed up with poor service both from the older staff and the teens they employ. If you want good service or even just service with a smile - do'nt bother going to the Middle Bell. It's lease is up for sale and I really hope a new landlord can improve matters!!!

Lord Burton, Burton-Upon-Trent

Saturday night visit... typical wetherspoons.. A real mix of people all enjoying cheap beer. Has a non-smoking area at the back of the pub, good range of real ales. Would recommend for a few beers before moving on to somewhere with more character.

The Shoulder of Mutton, Barton under Needwood

Went for lunch... food was good, the ale was very good (so my other half said). The outside courtyard was pretty. It also has a childrens play area. The pub inside was a little tired but had a pleasant atmosphere. Staff were friendly.

Would recommend!

The Green Man, Middleton

Nice country pub which we have been to on a few occasions and really liked it BUT last time we went was New Years Day and food was dreadful, not just ours, other people were complaining also. they did change one dish that was inedible but they did'nt even discount the bill.

They need to improve the food side of the pub.

The Orange Tree, Chadwick End

Bit too pretentious for me although the decor is pleasant and comfortable.

Food is expensive but nice.

The Oak, Hockley Heath

Has changed to Oro Market Place and restaurant. It is pleasant but expensive.

Driving into the carpark is a bit of a squeeze and visability is poor.

The Fleur De Lys, Lowsonford

It was very busy when we went there... perhaps the secrets out!! Very good - smoke free/good food/lots of charm.

The Bluebell, Henley In Arden

This pub was taken over a couple of years back...

They changed into an upmarket 'bistro' style of pub. I like it but it does get very busy. The food is good quality, but expensive (and yes, the portions are not huge) but there is a nice ambiance about the place now. Some limited outside seating at the back and at the front of the pub. The staff have always been extremely friendly which is a refreshing change.

Ye Olde Gate Inne, Brassington

Very old quaint pub... but not to my taste, from what we saw it has a small bar area and restaurant.

It did'nt seem particulary friendly, we only stayed for one drink though!

I would say it's more of a locals pub.

The Woodmans Rest, Shirley

Nice pub, friendly.

The Sharman's Cross, Solihull

Long time local of mine...

A good, large British pub... comfortable with plenty of seating.

The Crabmill, Preston Bagot

Upmarket pub/restaurant. Expensive but nice for a special occasion!

13 Dec 2006 17:25

The Red Lion, Solihull

Pretty good overall... comfortable with reasonable service.

The Nags Head, Henley In Arden

Smokey pub for locals

13 Dec 2006 17:15

The Bird in Hand, Beaudesert

Nicely decorated, efficient service... more of an eating pub.

Good value for food, it gets very busy every day of the week.

The Blacksmiths Arms, Branston

Popped in here for a quick drink on a Friday night.

Ended up in the bar which was very busy with rowdy working class blokes! We did'nt feel comfortable so drank up in double quick time and left. The bar staff were friendly enough though.

Cannot tell you much more as we didn't hang around ;)

The Gate Inn, Branston

Just moved into the area and tried it out...
Not to my taste, very small and basic but the staff were friendly enough. A typical 'men only' pub. Catch up with the times landlords ;)

It appears they have plans to extend and possibly renovate so it may be better then??

The Fox Inn, Dosthill

This pub has just renovated the old restaurant bit into a nice relaxed none smoking 'chill out' room with sofas and a cocktail bar, the only bad thing about this is that you still have to walk through the bar area which is scruffy and VERY smokey.

The room at the back is great IMO - perhaps the landlord will change the whole pub to no smoking :)

The Bulls Head, Wootton Wawen

Lovely Characterful pub that has been modernised but not to the extreme, it has a large beer garden, good sized lounge area with open fires and sofas and a restaurant.

It is a tad pricey both to eat and drink at but you get what you pay for, nice, relaxed surroundings.

13 Dec 2006 16:31

The Navigation Inn, Wootton Wawen

Ok, this used to be my local so I may be biased...

It is canalside and has a great walk along the canal after dinner, the beer garden is surprisingly peaceful even if the pub itself is on the main road.

The pub itself could do with a little renovation and is decorated in a typical pub style, it has a lounge area with a lovely log burner and a restaurant. The service is always friendly, and the food is always consistantly good value (it is reasonable cheap, basic fare).

The Old Boat, Alrewas

We went there for a meal and found out this was not a proper pub... it has been converted into restaurant only :(

However the food was very good, the service reasonable but I think it is a mistake to have it as a restaurant only... May be they will change back to a bar??? It also bans under 14 year olds so it is a very civilised place to go!!!

Nice location - you can go for a canalside walk to walk off your dinner!

The Royal Oak, Kings Bromley

Went for lunch here...

It has a restaurant and lounge. It has a nice beer garden too.
The food was good quality and reasonably priced. The bar staff were friendly and efficient.

The pub is not very modern but it is very welcoming and clean (the seating has cushions so you feel right at home)and it is what you'd expect of a true British pub.

The Middle Bell, Barton under Needwood

We went for a lunchtime drink here and I liked this pub, friendly and relaxed... should be more pubs like this around.

Yes, it has sofas.. thats GOOD - get with the year 2006!!! Nice modern decor, just what we, as a modern couple, like.

It is not a typical dingy old fashioned pub - thank God...
