The Fez Bar, Putney

Spent New Year's Eve there.

It wasn't bad once we were inside - good music, not too crowded, reasonable prices and lots of bar staff.

But, having put our names on the guest list, we arrived just a few minutes after the ridiculous 11pm deadline, we then had to Q in the cold and pay 20 each, instead of 15.

The Dukes Head, Putney

I suppose you could say that this pub has been 'Putnified'.

Not sure yet if that's a good or a bad thing!

I've only been there a couple of times since the refit, so I'll hold back from giving it a 'proper' review until I've been there at least a dozen times.

But I will say that I'll miss the small outside bar they used to open downstairs in the Summer.

The Coach and Horses, Soho

Norman Balon once banned smoking in parts of this pub, but all the regulars stuck two fingers up at him, ignored the ban and kept puffing away. Norman eventually admitted defeat, after trying to ban various people ... it could only happen in the Coach.

Poor old Norman, he's hasn't been around much which probably explains why standards there have slipped, especially the service - too many rude, amateur bar staff.

The new owners (of French House fame) should sort that out, though I wonder what Jeffrey 'Just the One' Bernard would have made of it all.

French House, Soho

Tiny, smoky, crowded, they only serve halves, full of luvvies, journalists, aspirant poets ... brilliant.

Ah yes, one of Soho's legendary drinking dens. Where so many new novels have been spoken about but never written, where pretty young wannabe actresses fall in love with inflated, drink-soden directors.

Have been a regular for 10 years and still get served by some of the same professional bar staff. Great pub for the booze or the conversation ... vive la French House.

Star and Garter, Putney

Went in for a quick lunchtime drink on a Sat about two weeks ago.

Ordered a bottle of Becks (I think!) and I then had the temerity to ask for a glass.

The barmaid (I'm being generous) pulled out a dirty glass, saw that it was dirty and still gave it to me.

I didn't use it but regret not telling her off.

That's what you get for going to the M Bar since 1998.

The Litten Tree, Putney

Bring back the old Slug & Lettuce please!!!

And put this sad establishement (in a brilliant location and in a wonderful old building) out of its misery.

Amen.

The Idle Hour, Putney

Very civilised ... nice place for a gentle start to the evening but if you're not eating then there are livelier places, especially for a Fri or Sat night out.

The Blue Posts, Soho

They serve a nice pint of ale in this place and that's saying something for this part of the world.

Go upstairs, where they've got a dumb waiter to bring your beers up.

Very nice place.

Bar Lupo, Soho

Stay well clear of this awful place.

The beer is almost always warm and it's full of suits on a Fri night.

The Fez Bar, Putney

I'm not saying it's a great club, it's never been a GREAT club, even when it was called the K Bar.

I'm just saying that it's not as bad as some of you make it out to be (and I have no vested interests here).

If you want to go to a great club, you'll either have to go to Soho or Manchester or Bolton or some other town in northwest England where they know how to club big time.

Star and Garter, Putney

Is this me getting old or is the music in Bar M getting louder and louder?

It's a Bar - with a great location - not a club. I couldn't have any kind of conversation with friends at 20.30 on a Sat night not long ago.

The Slug and Lettuce, Putney

a badly laid out establishment i'm afraid

too small and access to the bar is hampered

I miss the old slug & lettuce up the road on the corner near the bridge (now a horrible Litten Tree)

The Whistle and Flute, Putney

A really good pub spoilt by two large TV screens. They serve a nice pint of ale and in the winter its warm and full of amiable people taking it easy. You don't need two big screens distracting you from your beer and Saturday night conversation.

Having said that, it's much better than the horrible pub (can't remember name) it was a few years ago before the refurbishment.

The Fez Bar, Putney

You can knock the Fez Club, but as a resident of SW London, I can tell you there aren't many clubs to go to in the area if you don't fancy going to the West End. I've had some great nights there, I've never been asked to put my ciggy out and the doorstaff are good once they know you.

Decor better but gents are still a bit ropey. For those who don't like the M Bar and want a more traditional pub full of old men, there's one next door called The Duke's Head. Views of the Thames aren't that good though, funny that for a bar by the river!!
