The Ash Tree, Ashton Under Lyne

Fondly known as the Ash Tray.Very blokey atmosphere. It gets busy and scruffy in here, tables not cleaned often enough. As the designated driver I can't tell you about the beer but food-wise I wasn't impressed with the coconut-based curry- no flavour. Friends had the pudding & chips and enjoyed it.The staff here seem really nice and are the most attentive I've found in a Wetherspoons in this area but are rushed off their feet.If you order coffees, they tell you to go back to your table & they'll leave it on the end of the bar when they've made it. Its easy to forget to look every 5 seconds while you're talking to friends and really I don't want to drink anything that's been hanging around on a crowded bar.

The Harts Head Inn, Ashton under Lyne

The Hartshead is hit and miss. Run by the Vintage inns chain. It is convenient for me so I go a lot. The staff are mostly great. The same dish can vary enormously on each visit. I've had the mushroom stroganoff vary from absolutely wonderful to tough & dry with inedible mushrooms. One lunchtime my friend ordered a ploughmans lunch- that was fairly good value. I had the tiniest piece of asparagus quiche with about 3 rocket leaves and it cost 6. I complained to a member of staff that it was overpriced compared to the other dishes. I was told to go onto their website and log a complaint. Guess what... The link didn't work.It is frustrating when something lika that can't be resolved on site. However the location is lovely and the pub cosy.

The Fleece Inn, Holme

I like The Fleece, the food is lovely as are the staff. I've also been to the quiz even though I lived miles away at the time and it was a really friendly night.

The Great Western, Marsden

Lovely location, grim decor. 4 years ago a friend recommended it for Sunday lunch... Has it changed hands since then?I'm puzzled by the good reviews from 2008. The food was awful. Lots of it but no taste and we are absolutely not fussy eaters! I had turkey- not nice. The roasties were vivid orange and the few veg nasty & soggy. 24 hours later I could still taste the grease, nothing seemed to get rid of it. And we paid a tenner for the privilege. The bloke behind the bar was initially gushing then really arsey. We didn't have any pudding but had to pay for it as it's a set menu. Even with the huge portions & dessert if you want it, the meal we had was not good value, we left most of it because it tasted awful. The real ale drinkers may be ok here but the only time I'd go back would be to take that buffalo head off the wall and give it a decent burial!
