Food-oriented pub in the shadow of the pike and on the edge of town. Very attractive location with extensive beer garden. Enjoyed a well-kept pint of Brakspear Bitter but £3-20 pricey for Ashton. Worthe a visit. 7/10.

The Hartshead is hit and miss. Run by the Vintage inns chain. It is convenient for me so I go a lot. The staff are mostly great. The same dish can vary enormously on each visit. I've had the mushroom stroganoff vary from absolutely wonderful to tough & dry with inedible mushrooms. One lunchtime my friend ordered a ploughmans lunch- that was fairly good value. I had the tiniest piece of asparagus quiche with about 3 rocket leaves and it cost 6. I complained to a member of staff that it was overpriced compared to the other dishes. I was told to go onto their website and log a complaint. Guess what... The link didn't work.It is frustrating when something lika that can't be resolved on site. However the location is lovely and the pub cosy.

The Hartshead is in a prime location, sitting as it does in fields below the beacon tower of Hartshead Pike. It was previously a keg-only pub but now has the cask marque so I thought I'd pay it a visit. Very disappointing. Just 2 cask beers, ridiculously overpriced and the Black Sheep tasted foul. Not end of barrel off, but as though spoonfulls of salt had been added. It's a shame as it has a great garden area and appears to serve good food. Fine if you only want keg and a meal but not a place for good beer.
