The Tottenham, Soho

Updating my previous review - I agree this place seems to be going downhill. Last two times I visited although the place was packed (how could it not be in this location) they did not have two of the basic lagers, the bar staff were incredubly surly (after waiting ten minutes I actually had to wander down the bar and ask if this bloke was being paid to text on his phone other than pouring pints). It seems to have lost its way - like most of the tourists who end up there.

What a pub. To avoid.

The Merrymoor Inn, Mawgan Porth

It has undergone a renovation. The bar is nice, new furniture, a carpet that must have been chosen by someone who is colour blind, the menu has been updated - as have the prices - but one suspects if the bells were not removed from the microwaves it would still sound like a church over Easter. It now falls uncomfortably between a modern pub (circa 1992) and a beach side drop in for the tourist masses..

Its being turned into apartments.

The Sailors Arms, Newquay

Good pub to get drunk in, always seems to be a decent crowd, stumbled in there one winter and they had a quiz on and were made to feel very welcome. Not the sort of place for a bearded real ale freak but if you are stumbling round town visitng the pubs definetly head for this one

Sun Inn, Bassenthwaite

On the outside this is your archetypal village pub, roses around the door, bowl of water for the dog. However, inside its furnishings are rather more reminiscent of a comfortable urban wine bar and it is heavily orientated towards food - which is perhaps understandable as drinks income alone from such a small village would not be profitable.
The food itself is OK, the drinks are OK and it does get busy. Those who knew it in the past will look back with regret it is no longer a true drinker's local complete with darts and pool leagues but it is well worth a visit, a bite to eat, a reasonable pint and take a wander by the stream.

The Oddfellows Arms, Keswick

Used to work here a long time agoi but it makes it money the same way - being right by the entrance to the main car park it gets hordes of people in summer -all attracted by the 50 odd dishes on the menu for a couple of quid. You do not have to be Gordon Ramsey to work out this is not going to be haute cuisine, its all pre-chpopped veg, mass produced micrwave fayre which will fill a hole. Do not expect much more. Beer is Ok. Not worth a visit if you are after anything special unfortunately but ewhat do they care - there are another 1,000 punters walking right past it the next day, and the next....

t's ok, heaving in summer with the wannabee surfer crowd getting paralytic on relatively cheap beer - - in winter is it empty and cavernous with a decent selction of seating and the chance for a game of pool.

The Riv, Mawgan Porth

It's up for sale. Again. Hopefully the new owners will turn it into something less incestuosly-pathetically pretentious for a handful of surfer wannabees with an interest in chemical stimulus.

The Merrymoor Inn, Mawgan Porth

In the summer this place is a food factory for the Manchester and Northern masses who descend on the beach and then go to the Merrymoor for some oven chips and pre-cooked gammon. Horrendous food. Garden furniture inside and thousands of screaming Northern oik kids outside in the summer. In the winter it is slightly more acceptable although you know the food has been in the freezer for slightly longer and the locals all give you that "you ain't from these parts" look, even though 90 per cent of them are from Bury, came in the 80s and never left. Beer is Ok, toilets ok but if they placed it anywhere other than right beside a beach it would be closed in two weeks.

Ivory Peg, Chelmsford

Don't do it. Another beer factory devoid of atmosphere. The prices are cheap but you might as well turn the telly up and drink at home.

The Fleece, Chelmsford

BobsUncle - surely giving pub reviews based on their slot machines is a bit like rating casino's on their pint of best?

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford

The photo above is of the right pub. Its Ok, nothing special, quite cramped, the usual railway station pub where you pop in to wait for the train, get glared at by the handful of locals and then leave. Not worth missng a train for, put it that way.

The Sweeney's Bar, Chelmsford

Undoubtedly the best pub in Chelmsford for a pint. Small and crowded with the usual Irish pub tat (flags and the like) it has a great atmosphere, comfy seating and good beer. Staff are always great, good selection of bar food nibbles and it is the sort of place you can sit down in at 7pm and leave at 11pm, never having moved a metre but seen the world pass through its doors, really great. Wish they would spend a few quid on the toilets though!

Edwards, Chelmsford

Complete beer factory with deafening music and Essex blokes in Ben Sherman shirts trying to chat up the women, not helped by the fact their ears are bleeding cos the music is so loud and it is so packed you cant move. Oh to be 18 again and enjoy hell-holes like this.

The Bay Horse, Chelmsford

Weird place this - full of rockers and old school bikers and goths but I just weirdly love it. Despite all the people who look like they have walked out of an Iggy Pop gig circa 1989 it has a great atmosphere and if you get bored you can always count the body piercings on display. Have never seen any trouble here although the other week early on a Saturday night the bouncer would not let me enter by the side door and I had to go through the front which was weird as there was about ten people in there. overall though, excellent!

Bar Soho, Soho

Awful. Completely over-priced, atmosphere-less and pretentious with no apparent qualities to back it up. Avoid,

The Pitcher and Piano, Soho

Its a Pitcher and Piano, if you are after olde worlde atmosphere or quirks or a homely atmosphere, you have come to the worng place. It's ok, not particularly offensive, decor ok, toilets ok, but you could be in a Pitcher and Piano in Luton and you would barely tell the difference.

The Tottenham, Soho

A great place to meet people being opposite the tube station and has some lovely internal architecture but apart from that it is a bit soulless... it gets packed, the beers are standard and it has no real homely atmosphere to speak off. Toilets small and not up to much.

The Three Greyhounds, Soho

This is a strange pub for central london and in particular Soho - a very small pub where the emphasis (despite a limited menu) is definetly on booze rather than food. I consider it among my favourites in central london for the simple reason it is a great place to pop into for a reasonably placed pint with an OK atmosphere and completely free of pretensions. I would not eat there (why on earth would you eat standard micrwaved pub grub in the middle of Soho) and the toilets are always filthy but if you fancy a pub to wander into with a mate, have a chat and a few pints then I highly recomend it.
