The Wheatsheaf, Oxford

Oh dear, what a hole. Run by (ugly) deadbeats for (slightly less ugly) deadbeats. If you like good beer and a decent pub, avoid like the plague. It's a shame that pubs like this still exist. An embarrassment to the trade.

Crown & Thistle, Headington

Unpretentious and unassuming, but a friendly place to pause after a walk on Shotover.

The Harcourt Arms, Oxford

A lovely old-fashioned pub, everything you need for a nice garrulous beer with friends on an evening. There are board games too should conversation fade. Look it up!

The Marlborough House, Oxford

This used to be a decent local, but after several years of neglect closed down a year or so back. Now scheduled for redevelopment into luxury flats or similar.

The General Elliot, South Hinksey

There's always a good range of decent and interesting beer at GE, a rarity these days. The beer garden is a great place for a drink on a sunny evening or weekend afternoon, and there's often a fire roaring inside in winter. The beer festivals are worth looking up - the next is late in September, I recall.

The food is inexpensive and perfectly sound. And John now has grand plans for redeveloping the garden and expanding the car park. Worth a visit if you don't know it - and a pleasant haunt to return to if you do.

The Isis Tavern, Iffley Lock

The Isis (now the Isis Farmhouse) changed hands in February 2008. It's now run by a pleasant couple, who are a breath of fresh air after the dreadful brewery tenure of recent years. So ignore all comments below from pre-Feb 2008.

It's still, however, not a great pub. There's a very limited range of beers and food service is poor. The food itself is perfectly nice and inexpensive, with typically 3 or 4 dishes to choose from.

The location is lovely by the river and it's a good end for a rustic walk from central Oxford. But you're better off stopping for coffee and cake than beer and a meal. Here's hoping the new landlords continue their good work of improvement.

Folly Bridge Inn, Oxford

Much improved under new ownership. Friendly and pleasant. Now the best pub in south Oxford. There's a good little pub quiz on Thursday evenings.

Chester Arms, Oxford

A decent, friendly pub, slightly off the Iffley Road. The lights are rather bright and the decor too new, but it's a very nice place for a beer and chinwag. It has a good size garden for the long summer evenings (whenever those might be!).
