Three Horseshoes, Turves

The 'Shoes is my local - it's a 5 minute walk there but at least a 20 minute walk back! Beer is always well kept and well cold. A lager drinker by heart, but they normally have at least one guest ale on tap. Back in 2007 they had Sheps, Whitstable Ale - which was impeccably kept and went down well.

Very friendly pub. Always something going on and they do good theme nightscharity nights.

And the food, well it's amazing. And great value.

Pavilho Chins Bar, Lisbon

Just to echo previous comments about this bar; It is all of the things that have been said about it already - the memrobillia is amazing and there are various rooms which seem to have a theme.

Yes it's pricy for Lisbon, especially with Biarro Alto round the corner, but you have to bear in mind that you are also paying for the experience of having a beer in a bar that is truly unique. I doubt there is another bar like this anywhere else.

Was in Lisbon over the weekend and we stumbled into this place almost by accident (even though we had read about it in the Lonely Planet guide). Once inside it actually was like being in your favorite musesum, but with a really chilled atmosphere and beer on tap.

If I ever find myself in Lisbon again I will come here again.

The Charcoal Burner, New Eltham

Give that the the UK is (or has been) ina a recession and that the on-trade is seeing pub clousres running at between 4-9 per day, it's a wonder that this place survives.

Had an attempt at Sunday lunch in here today and it was an unmitigated disaster; ordered drinks at the bar - as driving I had a p9int of Lime and Soda, not the hardest drink to get wrong, but I ended up with a pint of flat green water. The wife had an oj and both glasses were dirty and smeared. Not a great start.

We had reserved a table this morning by phone - however the secen in the main dining area was awful; set in a grubby conservatory, which was crammed full of chaep looking furniture. Managed to squeeze our way into a corner table only to find dirty cutlery laid out on the table. Ordered the roast lunch with a soup starter; soup was awfu and had obviously just been poured from a tin and out through a microwave. At this point we though about leaving. However we deceided to wait for the main course. 90 minutes later we were still waiting and when it did arrive it looked disgusting and tasted little better. The lamb was more fat than meat, roast potaoes had been fried, veg was limp and looked like it had been cooked a week ago.

Being fair, we spoke to the manager who, while disagreeing with our comments about the quality of the food offered us a full refund. Went ot the bar to settle up only yo be told that their card machine was broken so they could only take cash!!

All in all an awful example of how not to run a pub. Will never set foot in this excuse of a pub again. I just can't beleive that int he current climate the landlordlady can afford to offer such a porr service and hope to keep this pub alive.

Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich

WTF is happening to some of Greenwich's finest pubs? I really used to like this place, but it was just a mess when I went in! Yes it was cold outside, but did they really need cheap looking portable heaters in the main bar area? And even with that it was still cold. One person behind the bar, who was under a lot of pressure as the place seemed to be filled with chinless idiots.

I didn't even get as far as the bar before I walked out. It's unlikely that I will ever come in here again TBH.

The Yacht, Greenwich

Great little pub, which surely must be picking up trade from the now lamentable Cutty Sark Tavern and the Trafalgar. Had a couple in here a few weeks back and was surprised at how much I really liked it in here.

In the past this pub might have been considered the poor relation to it's more historic neighbours, but this worm has most definitely turned. And for the better. And I think the fact that it was so busy in here is testament to that.

Will come back again next time I'm in Greenwich.

15 Feb 2009 13:36

The Plume of Feathers, Greenwich

Superb little back street boozer, very small and intimate. Quite friendly as well. Would very much like to go back next time I'm in Greenwich.

15 Feb 2009 13:32

The Pelton Arms, Greenwich

A real undiscovered gem of a pub. A proper back street boozer - ended a little Greenwich pub crawl in here a few weeks back. And after the disappointment of the Cutty Sark Tavern, this was a welcome respite.

We rolled up about 2100Hrs and it was pretty quiet in here, but there was a very relaxed vibe in the place, some good music being played so it felt the right place to draw the night to a close. There was a small open fire at one end of the pub and we sat about that drinking on very well kept lager. We all agreed that this was a place we would come back to for a longer session in the future.

15 Feb 2009 13:29

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

What have they done to this pub??? Was in London a few weeks ago, meeting up with some old friends, had a couple in here early Saturday afternoon. Could not believe how bad this pub now is. The old bar has been ripped out in favour of something that looks like it was knocked up in a CDT lesson, a truly shocking range of lagers on offer, the jukebox has gone so there iswas no music and the they have some monstrous fake wood burner in the fireplace. Hows has this been allowed to happen?

Also, the place was empty bar for a few people around the bar, but it was like the end of the world in there, it really was.

Being fair, the bar manager was friendly enough and was offering free tasters of the guest ales, but it felt like he was trying to breath life into something that was long dead. I stayed for the single pint and left. Thinking it might be me I brought my mates back later on to get their opinions - part of me was hoping that I would be proved wrong. Sadly, however I wasn't.

Whomever is responsible of the ruining of this fine pub should hang their head in shame. I despise pub "refurbishments" at the best of times, but to attempt one so half-heartedly and with what looks like half a budget is nothing short of scandalous.

I love this pub - but I'm now in the situation of; "do I come here again simply because I used to like it? Or never set foot in here again because it's tainted all the memories I had of it when it was excellent?"

15 Feb 2009 13:23

The Royal Tavern, Eltham

Drove past about a month ago - seen better days, very shabby looking. Didn't venture in to find out more.

28 Nov 2007 17:16

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Thats good to hear. Hopefully the tide is turning in favour of the Nell.

7 Oct 2007 19:08

De Hems, Soho

Ended up in here for the first time in bloody years on Friday - not much has changed in the intervening years. It's still rammed, still loud and the 'Boom is still good and gives a mind numbing hangover 24 hours later!

7 Oct 2007 18:59

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Yes, save the Nell, or it's a 'spoons pub for all of us!

Anyway, for those on Facebook (if not, why not?), there is a group dedicated to saving this most treasured of pubs, so come on and sign up!

On the petition front there is now just over 1600 signatures there,if you haven't already, please sign up!

22 Aug 2007 15:59

The Stag, Victoria

When going for a beer, other people's sexuality isn't really on the radar, so the fact that this is a gay pub, well, it's the 21st century, so who cares. It's actually a decent pub - I can't comment on what it was like before, but I did expect it to be a little, well, sleazy. In fact it wasn't. What it was though was very pleasant indeed and with no attitude. And it did have a nice chilled out kind of atmos. Which for a pub round these parts is amazing! Beer was nothing which is ever going to win awards, but it was cold and clean. Hell, even the door staff were polite!!

So I would go there again. Gay or not.

17 Jun 2007 18:01

The William the Conqueror, Rye Harbour

Basic Neame pub, little tatty round the edges. BUt thats good - I like my pubs to look like pubs and not like a hospital waiting room (take not Puzzle Pub Co.). Barstaff were excellent and friendly. The 'Boom was awful and flat. I didn't stay for a second pint.

13 Jun 2007 17:51

The Ship Inn, Rye

Didn't like the refurb, the tables are still sticky and are never wiped down it seems. Didn't try anything on tap - rather the Magners from a bottle. Barman was a little creepy and trying to impress all with his anti-corporate stance on brand lagers.

Was hear about the same last year and it was much better. Considering the location this pob should be so much better.

13 Jun 2007 17:48

The Woolpack, Brookland

Great pub in a great location - it was always going to be a winner. However I have to disagree with the comments made on the 29/08/06 and 12/11/06 by Anon and Ahrmedofrye respectively.

Firstly regarding Anon's comment about this pub being a touch Chavvy. It isn't, unless you consider a mixed crowd of old and young, families and locals "Chavvy". I suspect that Anon does not truly understand that term. Either that or he takes his drinks at Buckingham Palace! Ahrmedofrye, states that the food is bland and overated. Again this isn't so! The food is well cooked and in massive portions. It's not anything fancy, rather good food well done, very well done.

My fellow drinker, should you ever find yourself down this way, my advice to you would be to stop off for a drink and something to eat as this is a real gem of a pub picturesque surroundings.

13 Jun 2007 17:43

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

As of today, 30th May 2007 @ 1520Hrs, there are 1,186 signatures on the petition. Which is great (would never get us all in the Nell at the same time though!). Still think we are going to need more names on the list to save ourlittle pub..........KEEP IT GOING!!!

30 May 2007 15:20

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

Certianly not the pub it was, even a year ago. I'm amazed that theu think they can justify 3.10 for a pint of Grolsch! yes, the view and location are winners, but that price would shame a West End pub. Just as bad is the price of tunes on the jueky (though they had a rocking selection from the "Man in Black", so I can't really complain about available tracks). One pound per track! I don't think I've ever seen one quite as expensive. And it ISN'T user friendly. Period.

I will say though that most of the bar staff, are, on the whole pretty good and friendly - Which can make or break a pub. So thats all good. And a pub like this deserves to have decent staff.

It would be churlish to say that the CST is going down the pan, but I think the high prices for music and beers will put a lot of people off. Which is a shame beacuse this place does a liberal sprinkling of pub magic about it.

21 May 2007 16:41

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Signed! Bringing it to the attention of all my pals who drink in the Nell as well.

27 Apr 2007 23:26

The London and Rye, Catford

Spoons + Catford = well, it's not going to equal a decent pub. Why bother go somewhere else for abeeter pub and better beer.

22 Apr 2007 18:03

The Ravensbourne Arms, Lewisham

Nasty estate type boozer. Avoid.

22 Apr 2007 18:00

The Fox and Firkin, Lewisham

Once the best thing about Lewisham (apart from the road out of the place) The Fox was a great night out. However as the 90's wore on and the advent of Yates and then the Quaggy duck, proved to be the start of a terminal decline for the once majestic Fox.

Visit's in the intervening years have seen many a makeover and papering of cracks, which have not addressed the failings of this place; It's a tired old boozer, living on past glories (something that a lot of Firkin pubs seem to be these days). Either it goes back to how it used to be in the early 90's or close it and move on.

22 Apr 2007 17:56

The Market Tavern, Lewisham

I'm with H_files on this one. It seems Lewisham is in the grip of a slow but probably not so gentle terminal decline, most notably visible through it's pubs. And this one is certainly no exception.

Way back in the day, the Quaggy as it once was, took over from Yate's as Lewisham's unrivalled meeting place, yet 2007 see's it as a somewhere you'd go for a DIY facial from one of the local plastic "geezers". Still it keeps them off the street mugging old ladies.

22 Apr 2007 17:48

Pitchers Sports Bar, Lewisham

And another one bites the dust! What a shocker of a pub this became when it changed from the Plough.

Was last in hear way back in 2003 and even then it was the kind of place you would get stabbed as a "Friendly" greeting. I'm glad this hovel has now closed it's doors. But frankly, Lewisham is NEVER going to get decent pubs or attract decent punters.

Hopefully it will be pulled down and erased from history.

22 Apr 2007 17:42

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

In the Nell on Friday afternoon - all the talk was that the development is going ahead, sometime in July or August. There was also talk of a legal challenge on the cards.

22 Apr 2007 10:04

The Jolly Fenman, Blackfen

Big Al's Local. Food ok, beer ok, patrons ok. In other words it's okay. Just your average Greater London Suburbian working class pub.

14 Apr 2007 14:02

The Hare and Billet, Blackheath

Blackheath's premier pub. And thankfully not a chav trap. Maybe beacuse it's pretty much away from the main drag of Blackheath (princess of Wales to the Railway). Maybe because it doesn't enourage the herd mentality. Or because it isn't pretentious. Either way, it's rare thing round these parts.

enjoy.

14 Apr 2007 13:57

Dylan's, Lewisham

Awful. Better in it's previous incarnation as the Joiners.

14 Apr 2007 12:43

The Royal Oak, Dartford

Good to see the Royal Oak is still the best pub in Dartford. In London next week, so may pop in for a couple of pints of 'boom.

14 Apr 2007 12:30

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

This news is unwelcome and unacceptable to those who have come to love the Nell. We must do something to persuade these faceless jobsworth's (read "Developers") That we won't sit by and watch another of Londons historic pubs be consumed in the name of "modernisation" and "Development".

There are plenty who have written here who clearly love the Nell for what it is and amongst us all we surely have the skills needed to make our voice heard!

7 Apr 2007 19:38

O'Neills, Blackheath

Plastic = Not real an imitation of the real thing. O'Neills pubs are in general about as Irish as Bin Laden. Surely this is a fragrant breach of the Trading Standards Act? Another Woeful B'Heath pub.

27 Mar 2007 14:46

The George Hotel, Whittlesey

Crap. Crap and empty. Never reads well for a pub. I'll leave it at that.

27 Mar 2007 14:06

The Bricklayers Arms, Whittlesey

Pub that time forgot. And in a weird kind of way it's all the better for it. Not sure about wine being served up in what looked like tumblers given away free by petrol stations in the 80's after you spent five sheets of the realm. But then what do I know?

27 Mar 2007 14:05

The Duchess, Greenwich

Stumbled in by chance with Big Al last Saturday. Run of the mill south London boozer. Locals ok, beer ok, TV ok (though England would go onto lose to Wales in the Six Nations).

This type of pub is sadly becoming something of a rarity throughout London as the style free "Style bars" continue their remorseless through the captial. It's a shame as places like these are a real locals pub and offer a charm, albeit a rough charm that the souless bars that the mindless fashionista inhabits could never understand.

A mention must be made of the toilets though. Was expecting a cross between a sewage plant ind the everglades. But. Hats off to this pub they were so clean and tidy (a rarity in South London) and even had doors that hadn't been kicked in and had locks. Amazing!

22 Mar 2007 13:41

Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich

Lack of Nelsons Blood put a dampner on our eveining pub crawl around Greenwich. Other than that the Trafalger is still a superb pub.

22 Mar 2007 13:34

The Yacht, Greenwich

Following on from oliver's comments regarding the refurb; Didn't even notice that there had been one. Not a criticism - most pub refurb's are horrific and should be avoided, after all how many once great pubs fade into nothingness after being subjected to one?

Okay, the Yacht is just as it was the last time I was herre - with the exception of the bar staff 100% more friendly than before and dare i say it easier ont he eye as well. There was a good atmos and the beers was cold, very cold. Which is a good thing. Will come again when in London.

22 Mar 2007 13:32

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

Been a while since I've been round these parts, so was glad to get back to one the best pubs in the Greenwich area. Shocked to find that the prices had gone up somewhat and even worse was the new jukebox. How they can justify a pound per song is beyond me! Even worse is the GUI on the jukebox - I gave up after trying to locate some ddecent music and ended up putting on whatever. Shocking.

That said, this fine old pub has lost none of it's atmos and charm in the intervening 18 months since I was last here (Christmas 2004). And will always make a point of popping in when in London.

Oh, and it seems to have got slightly busier than I the last time I was here.

22 Mar 2007 13:10

The Princess of Wales, Blackheath

a once majestic pub way back in the day. Now just another souless blackheath pub catering to the Chav masses. Beer ok, but not great. However the bar staff were superb - both pulling pints and as eye candy.

Last time I came in here was way back in 2001 and the intervening yesrs have not been kind. yet another refurb. I just can't for the life of me understand why every pub refrub now has to ruin everything that made the pub busy int he first place. Sad to say that the working man would not find any solace in here straight after work. Too many plastic hardmen a point highlighted by the fella who took a royal shovelling in the doorway from 5 muppets.

Crap. And I'll never come here again. Ever.

20 Nov 2006 15:20

The Ship Inn, Rye

Superb. No tossers, good atmos, food and lagers. Friendly barstaff as well.

My adivce; if you're in the area pop in for somethign to eat and a pint. You won't regret it!

9 Oct 2006 18:12

Lloyds No. 1, Bexleyheath

Now that Yates has closed, surely it can only be a matter of weeks until Lloyds, meets it's nadir.

29 Sep 2006 16:47

Yates, Bexleyheath

LMFAO! Yates. Closed. How sweet life can be!

29 Sep 2006 16:46

The Silver Cross, Whitehall

possibly the worst pub in Whitehall. People who moand about the environment will hate this place - there's more wood in this pub than in Epping bloody forest!

Staff are exlusively from Eastern Europe (i can remember, back in the day, when all bar staff came from the southern Hemisphere). This means that not only will you struggle to order a pint of Fosters in English, but also suffer the bar staff pulling crappy half filled pints. Even jokinlgly asking for a flake in your lager doesn't work in here! Oh, and the beer is truly awful!

27 Sep 2006 13:23

The Roundhouse, Covent Garden

Birthday's, Christmas and Maunday Thursday.........it's all been done in this fine little boozer.

Always a good spot for people watching as the constant flux of people walking past never abates.

Beers are good, and it has a good atmoshpere.

22 Sep 2006 13:34

The Essex Serpent, Covent Garden

Empty and the beer wasn't all that. Too mcuh choice around this area for me to go back again.

19 Sep 2006 13:23

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Superb little pub tucked away from the masses. Always busy, always a good atmos and good beers. What more do you want or need form a pub?

You can stuck your souless chain boozers. This is where it's at.

19 Sep 2006 13:21

All Bar One, Covent Garden

It's an All-Bar-One so you can pretty much take the following as a given;

1) Bland and sterile pseudo wine bar.
2) Expensive.
3) Devoid of anything approaching an atmospshere.
4) Full of drunk siuts who think they're "IT".

To echo the other comments; you are much better to go somewhere which offers the opposite of an AB1.

I find it alarming that people actually think of these places as their "Work local" or as a real pub. Espcially when if you just open your eyes there are pub in the area which as just so, so much better.

19 Sep 2006 13:19

The Porterhouse, Covent Garden

Way overaated and full of suited tossers on a Friday night.

That said, if you can pop in during the day you can have a quiet beer in peace without the heaving masses of the West End and take in just how maze like this pub can be.

Another thing to note and to be thankfull for is the wide and varied range of beers and lagers on sale.

19 Sep 2006 13:14

Boadicea, Charing Cross Station

A pit stop before catching the train back to the Dartford badlands (thank f**k i saw sense and moved away). Anyway, it's just as the previous reviews state and rather like Margate, in that it's a nice place to have a very qick pint, but you wouldn't want to have a session in there!

Though, and i wonder if other reviewers would concur, that train station barspubs have a certain ambience all their own - for good or ill.

Mind you it's not as bad as the Oast house in London Bridge - that place has no bogs!

19 Sep 2006 13:04

The Old Tiger's Head, Lee

I always had this place down as the worst of the two tigers head pubs. Seems this one has outlasted the other. Another one of those bizarre things in life then.

Like Andy's comment about it being a "Ferrier Estate Social Club" Funny as f$$k!

19 Sep 2006 12:58

The New Tigers Head, Lee

Closed then? FFS! This used to ba an alright little boozer. Moved away from the area a while back, but always though that this boozer would stand the test of time. Still if the last three reviews are anything to go by it must have gone down hill and gone down that hill bloody fast!

19 Sep 2006 12:55

The Bell And Compass, Charing Cross

I really don't know what to make of the Bell and Compass; on one had it totally trumps it's former incarnation the Griffin, it's lighter tidider, cleaner, etc, etc. Yet on the other hand it seems to be going down the bland All-Bar-One, sterile look.

In an ideal world, it would reatin the sometimes cozy feel of the griffin, but keep teh vastly improved levels of services and general ridiness of the Bell.

One thing I have noticed since it's makeover is the number of people who don't just pop in for a quick pint before sprinting across the road to get the train home. Again, possibly due to change in direction of this pub.

14 Sep 2006 10:43

The Crown, Lee

good alround Youngs pub. Way pricey though, even for Youngs!

Need to watch out for the local estate ner-do-wells and roaming pikey's though.

13 Sep 2006 21:48

Yates's, Lewisham

That should read Jan '99. Whoops!

13 Sep 2006 17:31

Yates's, Lewisham

This used to by wok local from the day it opened until about Jan '95. Saw the great times, the good times and in the end it was mainly poor times.

Will always remember Christmas and New Year's Eve in here. They were just the best times.

Used to be for the comedy nights, which were never really appriecated by the local morons. In fact one of the fellas who used to compere the comedy nights, ended up on Channel 4 on Friday nights with Gail Porter, i think his name was Chris.

For me the best times were being in there after work. Used to finish @ 1500Hrs and be in Yates by 1505Hrs. And it used to have Bud on tap. Which is almost as rare as rocking horse shit!!!

Bet it isn't that good in there now! It's getting a rating for how it was not for how it is.

13 Sep 2006 17:29

The Lord Northbrook, Lee

Plainly one of the worst boozers in the locality, full of plastic gangsters, who think (and will no doubt tell you that they are "faces". Quite possibly but only ugly faces!)

To be fair, when i was last in here, it did offer a late drink - so credit where credit is due. It was also mainly empty, so draw you own conclusions there.

Not a pub i'd ever miss if it got pulled down.

13 Sep 2006 17:18

The Edmund Halley, Lee

Quite possibly the worst example of a 'Spoons pub to be found inside the M25, possibly the UK.

Doubles up as a smoking roomcanteen for the losers from JS Lee Green (JS Lewisham, was always the far superior store) across the road.

If you like, dirty tables, staff that won't even acknowledge you, beer that tramps would turn their noses up at and no real atmosphere, then you'll like drinking here. If not head to the Tigers Head (both) for a better time.

13 Sep 2006 17:14

The Park Tavern, Eltham

I always had this down as the worst pub in Eltham. On my single visit to this place it was confirmed. And that was in 1991.

Judging be the comments here it hasn't changed!

Nothing like progress, though i find that these are the type of pubs that will survive all trends in the pub game. How weird isd that?!

13 Sep 2006 17:10

The Crown, Eltham

Used to be the old timers and postmens pub in Eltham back in the day. Never the most lively of places, but i'll always remember when the old dear from the sally army would come round trying to sell us copies of their newsletter.

Funny how some thing's stick in the memory!

13 Sep 2006 17:08

Ye Olde Greyhound, Eltham

My first serious local boozer, back in the day when i lived in Eltham. Had many a great Friday night in there drinking snakebite and black. Mmmmmm yummy! Not.

Highlights included; decent jukebox, decent foster (though in truth it isn't hard to keep good fosters). Used to be pretty much an extension of school on those heady Friday nights.

Last went in there about 5 years ago. And it had been renamed "Ye Olde Greyhound". That initsekf was bad enough, but that did not prepare me the scene inside; It looked like a fashion show for Ben Sherman shirts and snide Burberry! Utterly without a redeeming feature. And just to top it off, waht i presume to be the landlordmanager's son, playing at being a DJ. Obiviously this goon though that to be a rockin' poub DJ all you need to do is wear a shell suit look like a cock and play crappy music badly.

To see such a formerly great pub reduced to this and then closure is sad indictment of the retards or have run this place since i was a regular.

Hopefully one day it can rise from the ashes and regain some of it's former glory, though i won't hold my breath.

I'm going to rate this pub, but bear in mind that I'm going to rate it as i knew it back in the long summer of 1990. Not the snothole it became!

13 Sep 2006 17:05

Beehive, New Eltham

This was a decent boozer some years ago, like the 90's. Oh well, shit happens. THough it's always a dissapointment to see a former fave boozer down on it's luck.

I remember it as a pretty decent boozer to come and have a quick pint before going home after work and for a longer session on a Saturday evening before going onto the Venue in new cross, oh happy days indeed.

13 Sep 2006 16:51

The Odd Fellows, Dartford

Actually this place is quite nice. Always planned on having a go at their curry nights but never quite made it. Beer is good though and, this must be a first for me the refurb is actually quite good!

Again, I concur with RogerB the Rose and Crown is better if you are more of a tradtional pub kind of person.

13 Sep 2006 09:38

The Railway Hotel, Dartford

All i can say about this pub, is it provided somewhere to have a piss when the station bogs are locked shut after getting of a train from Charing Cross.. This really is the original template of a deadbeats pub. Loud gobby tossers, who can't spell work, let alone understand the concept. during the hotter summer months you can always see a gaggle of deadbeats sitting outside showing off their cheap and unprofessional tattoo's leering at people leaving the station on thier way home.

One night inparticular springs to mind; After coming home on a Friday night from London, walking passed this pub there were two meat head bouncers (one of which used to go the the same gym as me and wa soooooooooo up his own ringpiece and had other sad and desperate people haning out the back of him, hogging all the weights. Tossers!) on the main doors, however the side doors of the pub were also open, but with no one stopping people coming in or out.

TBH, i'm glad i no longer live in Dartford or have to walk past this eyesore anymore, though i feel sorry for those that still do.

13 Sep 2006 09:35

The Wat Tyler, Dartford

One of Dartford's better pubs and I can concur with the comments made by HTM69, Kutiepie6662003 and RogerB. Never my local when i lived in Dartford, but popped in once or twice during my four year stay.

13 Sep 2006 09:24

The Malt Shovel, Dartford

Another Youngs pub, set way off the main Dartford drag. Which works both to it's advantage and disadvantage. If spoons pubs set the lowest of expectations for the pub going populace, then Youngs are near the very top; Well kept beers, clean, good atmosphere and largely no tossers. The only downside i have with youngs pubs is the price. BUt than again, if we all wanted cheap beer and food, the world woulf be full of spoon's pubs. So it's probably for the best.

The Rose, Dartford

Bland in the extreme. I would imagine that the vast majority of punters who come here, come to see the larger than life landlord Andy Fordham. Sadly, this would seem to point out that the pub is crap.

13 Sep 2006 09:17

The Tollgate, Dartford

Once. And only once have i visited this nasty little boozer.

Just awful. A real candidate for the worst pub ever. I lasted just long enough in here to drink about half a pint. Not good.

13 Sep 2006 09:06

The Royal Victoria and Bull, Dartford

Another small town pub that suffers from STS (small Town Syndrome), like it's near neighbour the Litten Tree. Full of plastic hardmen and gangsters, who are probably still at school and shouldn't even be in a pub.

I don't care for pubs that are this big, as usually they favour cramming people in over having any kind of atmosphere.

The beer isn't of a standard that would encourage you to make a second visit. As for the food, well, it's so bad that it must in some way breach teh trading standards act. Horrific! In particular stay away from anything that suggests it was caught at sea.

It's hard to seperate this hovel and the Litten Tree. My advice? Go somewhere else!

13 Sep 2006 09:03

The Stage Door, Dartford

Never thought that the Stage Door was run down. A little frayed around the edges yes. Run Down no.

Still as the previous comments touch on; it is a local pub for local people, to borrow a phrase from the LoG. And it seems to be bypassed by the hordes of pissed up yobbo's that descend on Dartford at the weekend.

Another Neame pub, so the beers are normally well kept.

13 Sep 2006 08:54

The Courthouse, Dartford

Youngs pubs normally deliver two things;

God pubs & expensive beer. Or to put it another way; West End prices in the suburbs.

13 Sep 2006 08:51

The Smith and Western, Chichester

Gret place to coem for a cold beer or a huge steak. Infact i would go far as to say the best steak i've ever had in the UK.

Not really a pubar, but well worthy of it's inclusion on B.I.T.E.

11 Sep 2006 09:12

The London Stone, Cannon Street

Small and cosy, nice to get away from the maddening crowds marching to and from Cannon Street station and their offices. Like anything could be more important than a cold beer, d'uh!

11 Sep 2006 08:48

The Honourable Pilot, Gillingham

Not bad, better for familes than a pub to have a long session in.

11 Sep 2006 08:45

The Southern Belle, Gillingham

Another boozer that was only used when getting off the train @ Gillingham! Think the Landlord at the time used to be in the Parachute Regiment.

11 Sep 2006 08:38

Crush Bar, Dartford

Did this hovel used to be Zens in another life? That was crap too!

6 Sep 2006 21:48

The City of London, Dymchurch

Quite possibly the first pub i ever went in! Thanks Dad! Had a quick pint in here a while back. Another Neame offering with well kept beer.

6 Sep 2006 21:45

The New Inn, Winchelsea

Lovely. Nice open fire, good food and good beer. Superb.

6 Sep 2006 21:43

The Ship Inn, Winchelsea Beach

Another favorite! Got a little seaside hideaway nearby, which we like to get down to now and then. The ship is normally the first stop after the long drive down. One thing i do so miss up in the fens, is the lack of 'Boom. Can't be doing with 'Boom in tins.

Anyway, great little boozer, nice and friendly. Will be down there later in the year.

6 Sep 2006 21:40

The Valiant Sailor, Capel Le Ferne

What's the score with this boozer now? Last I heard it was closed. Had some good nights in there.

6 Sep 2006 21:36

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

Last in here just before Christmas 2005. One superb pub. And away from the tourist trail which so blights Greenwich. Enjoyed some excellent company that night.

Times change and time waits for no man. Even the Pig. Will hopefully be able to enjoy a few jars whn next in the smoke. Hopefully later on this year - the view seems to be better int he winter as well!

Rock on!!

6 Sep 2006 21:34

The Theodore Bullfrog, Charing Cross

Another regular haunt, when working in Whitehall. Had many a drunken lunchafternoonevening, etc, etc, etc in here.

Looking forward to having a couple of jars when next int he smoke.

6 Sep 2006 21:28

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Will be taking in a couple of "cheeky" pints when next in the smoke. Don't miss much about London, but safe to say the Nell is one of those rare things that I do!

6 Sep 2006 21:25

The Coal Hole, Strand

Used to frequent, when a DEFRA twonk in another life. Stopped going after some horrifc episodes of shite lager and even shiter staff.

Has anything changed?

6 Sep 2006 21:22

The Westminster, Westminster

Bring back the Galaxy class Enterprise "D"! Or better still, replace it with a Sovereign class Enterprise "E" (but not an NX class Enterprise, which is based on the Akira class starship!).

This place is horrific and was much better as Page's bar!

Beer isn't that bad though!

5 Sep 2006 13:04

The Puzzle, Westminster

Bloody awful! Was way better when it was the Old Monk.

again it's another DEFRA pub.

Better for a long lunch than an early evening!

5 Sep 2006 12:59

The Barley Mow, Westminster

Another mainly DEFRA pub. Normally part of teh Friday night booze trek, which starts in the Marquis.

Only a so, so kinda pub. But sometimes thats all you need. Certainly spent enough time in here. IN fact, this is the first pub i had a drink in when i started @ MAFF (as it was back then.

Happy days indeed!

5 Sep 2006 12:57

Walkers of Whitehall, Whitehall

Walkers comes in for some harsh criticism. And TBH most of it's a tad unfair. Seems to come in and out of fashion very quickly, especially with DEFRA twonks. Personally I've always liked it in there. Beer is good, never had the food though. Very nicely tucked away from the main drag of Westminster Village, so not too many tourists - and they always, always drink upstairs.

8 Aug 2006 21:24

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Don't know WTF stamford is on about. Perhaps he got confused with another pub? Who knows?!

What I do know (and I've posted this under other names on this site) is that the Nell is one of London's greatest unknown pubs. It rocks. I've had so many late, late lunches (former Civil Servant) and even later evening's in the Nell. It just is everything a decent pub should be.

And as for the bar staff, well, i can tell you that without a doubt, the best in in any pub in the west end.

Can't wait to have another beer in here, when I'm next in London.

27 Jul 2006 17:03

The Royal Oak, Dartford

Best pub in Dartford, by some distance. Most people who know Dartford would say; "That's not difficult!". However this really is better in every way a pub can be.

Certainly, this was my "local" when i lived in Dartford. And about the only thing that I will miss about the place (except the Green Spice curry house in Darenth). And it's 'Boom was always a welcome sight. Can't seem to get it up in the Fens :-(

27 Jul 2006 16:14

The Litten Tree, Dartford

Crap. Suffers from STS (Small Town Syndrome). Avoid. Croos the road and walk on to the Royal Oak.

27 Jul 2006 16:07

The Marquis of Granby, Westminster

Ah, how i will miss the Marquis. Not everyone's cup of tea, but i always enjoyed coming here.
