The Botley Hill Farmhouse, Warlingham

Called in yesterday while walking the North Downs Way. It still calls itself a "free house" but the only beer on offer was Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen. The IPA was perfectly well kept, but at 3.00 a pint something more interesting would have been preferable.

The Brookwood, Woking

Pub has closed and is being converted into offices - apparently they didn't need planning permission for that particular change of use. Never a great pub, not recently anyway, but it's always sad when another one bites the dust.

The Heron on the Lake, Fleet

This is my local, but I didn't visit regularly because the beer was not good - a range of 4 or 5 boring regional and national brews generally in poor condition. Also the food could be variable. However, now it is in McMullen's hands things seem to be looking up. Overtly, little has changed from the previous ownership (Chef & Brewer) and I believe it is still the same management team. I haven't eaten here recently, but a couple of pounds seem to have been knocked off the menu choices. The last couple of times I have visited there have been three beers on - Cask, Country and a seasonal, and they have generally been in good nick, although I would prefer to see AK. Although it is still food oriented you now feel less out of place occupying a a table and just drinking, and one time I was there with friends we were left drinking up until well after 11 without any pressure from staff to move on. This is a great place to sit outside in the summer, overlooking the Fleet Pond, hopefully the Heron will maintain its new higher standard.

The Hautboy Inn, Ockham

Change of use to a place of worship has now been granted by Guildford Borough Council.

The Squirrel at Hurtmore, Hurtmore

I am told by the new landlord that the Squirrel will be reopening "around the 19 July" with four real ales on.

The Keep, Guildford

Had an excellent pint of Shere Drop here on Friday, easily the best pint out of a few in Guildford that evening. Not crazy they only sell one real ale, that's what they turn over at the moment - and the result is it was in top condition. Seemed fairly quiet for a Friday night but the landlord said it would probably get busy later.

The Good Intent, Puttenham

Called in yesterday while walking the North Downs Way from Farnham to Guildford. The Surrey Hills Ranmore Ale and Harvey's Bitter were quite superb, the ham from the ploughmans was real ham, the sort that still tastes like it was made from a pig. Excellent.

The Old Kings Head, Borough

This is an unprepossessing boozer - as people have said - but last night there was a reasonable number of real ales in good condition (my St Austell Tribute was good, reportedly so were the Harvey's and the Hyde's Owd Bill - an unusual beer to find in London). Two football matches were on but no volume so not too intrusive.

The Royal Oak, Borough

Didn't notice if Pride was on yet, we didn't stay very long as there seems to have been a sudden price hike, once everybody had met up we moved on. One of my friends reported 3.30 a pint, not sure which beer that was for but even the barman expressed his sympathy! But the pub was busy with people drinking and eating and the pale Ale was excellent as usual.
