Arcadia Ale and Wine Bar, Headingley

Arcadia has created a bit of a problem for itself with the extension. It's now twice the size but the bar is the same size as it was before. The queues at the bar on a Friday and Saturday night can be extensive (10-15 minutes to get served). They have started to do some table service I think to mitigate the problem. It's still the best ale pub in Headingley by a country mile though.

The Bowl Inn, Lower Almondsbury

I believe it's been taken over by Brains in 2009. They now stock a good range of ales and yes I'd echo the previous comment that it certainly wasn't more than 3.00 a pint! It's a classic village local this one - very cosy and not built for those of more statuesque proportions (i.e. you might have to duck occasionally). Well worth checking out just a couple of miles off the M5.

The Kings Head, Bayswater

I thought this was a pretty good pub. Decent range of ales and better than average pub grub. Non-smoking area too which is nice when you want to have food.

The Scarbrough Hotel, Leeds

Beer really well kept here and changes all the time. Couple of beer festivals each year also.

The Wrens, Leeds

Went into Wrens recently for the first time in years and found it still to be a gem. The no smoking room on the left is the best part of the pub. There is always a small range of real ales.

Mojo's, Leeds

A few years ago this place was responsible for some of the best nights I can remember (or not remember). Recently it has really lost its magic. The music is played so loud it distorts and they now play far too much modern indie rock for my liking. It probably just needs a refurb. The cocktails are still good.

The North Bar, Leeds

This place broke the mould when it opened a few years ago. Others have followed in its wake by offering modern surroundings and a range of international bottled and draft beers. However I think the sheer size of North Bar's beer menu takes some beating. The local artwork adds to the ambience and the music is always cool. Still sets the standard.

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

Richard Branson drove me to this pub. Well not literally but when one of his trains was late I managed to squeeze a couple of pints in here. I urge you to contrive to miss your connection if Mr Branson or the National Express Group don't facilitate it for you and visit this wonderful multi-roomed pub. Beer brewed on the premises as well as a range of, generally Midlands/Northern, ales.

The Cross Keys, Holbeck

Recent addition to Leeds real ale scene (opened summer 2005). Owned by same people that brought you North Bar on Briggate. 4-5 real ales plus quality European lagers and wide range of bottled beers. Superb food available. The place is sold as more of a gastro-pub. Lovely old characterful building.

Arcadia Ale and Wine Bar, Headingley

A veritable oasis for beer lovers in a predominantly student pub area. Part of Market Town Taverns chain of no-smoking pubs (8 of them). 5-6 regularly changing real ales plus wide range of bottled beers from around the world. Great atmosphere with no music - just the hubbub of conversation.
