Bel and The Dragon, Godalming

I used to go here a lot but this business is clearly in its death throws. Arrived on Sunday afternoon and was met by a harrassed and unhappy-looking staff member who made no eye contact and simply nodded when we asked for a 'table for two'. We waited in vain for service, so I went up to the unstaffed bar to see if I could figure out what bottled bitter/ale they might have. I couldn't see what beer they had as the bar was stacked with unwashed empty glasses so I sat down again. Place looked a bit scruffy, prices have gone up on the food whilst the variety of dishes and the actual number of staff has dropped. Eventually, when it became clear that we weren't going to get served we just got up and left. The diners looked sympathetic, the few staff we could see didn't bat an eyelid. Went round the corner to the pub at 5 Wharf St. Needless to say the contrast was striking: food was excellent ( very nice roast pork belly with a pint of Doombar) and the staff were really friendly.

The White Horse, Hascombe

Was charged 3.45 for a pint of Tribute tonight. Is this a record? This pub's prestige is not equal to its premium.

The Merry Harriers, Hambledon

Nice to see how well this pub has come along in the last year or so. Very friendly staff and a great selection of ales and cider. The management at the White Horse in neighbouring Hascombe should take notice as this pub shows good attention to detail but most importantly it delivers consistently. Moreover, the beer garden catches plenty of evening sun in summer - a lovely place to visit with some terrific walks to be had just beyond the front door.

The White Horse, Haslemere

Great pub. The food is fantastic, there's a reasonable beer selection and I love the laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

The Red Lion, Godalming

Had a nice pint of Flowers in here last weekend. I'm hopeful that it will establish itself as a decent, friendly boozer.

The Rose and Crown, Godalming

Really nice little pub. The only problem is the permanently pissed-up regulars that hog the bar. They always go quiet when anyone new comes in. Makes you feel like your crashing someone else's party. That kind of thing can be bad for business in a pub. Especially one that can pick up a lot of passing trade from hot, hassled and tired train commuters. Still a nice little pub especially on a summer's evening.

The Sun Inn, Dunsfold

Really good rare beef baguettes to be had here. I particularly like the fact that on a sunny when all the other pubs in the area are trying scalp you for a mediocre sunday lunch you can still turn up here and have a decent sandwich, a pint of beer and a table outside. Always friendly too.

It's being going downhill for a while and it's pretty sloppy these days. The worst time to visit is when it's busy and you're hungry. The place is always packed which defies logic but unfortunately encourages complacency. The staff tend to get tired and so the service can be pretty unresponsive. The roast dinners are overpriced and invariably cold. One assumes they have to make them en masse (the roast potatoes are awful). The last time I was there I decided to play it safe and have bangers and mash. How hard could that be? The sausages were literally inedible. I was with polite company and didn't want to complain (which I regret) as I felt really quite angry. If you do visit, go when it's quiet and stick to the very decent beer selection. For food consider The Sun in Dunsfold (a lot more friendly and a lot less pretentious) or even head into Godalming and visit Bel and the Dragon where the food is only a little more expensive but infinitely better quality than the White Horse.
