The Four Seasons Public House, Devizes

Closed - now an antique shop

The Crown, Devizes

What can I say about this place. Stark and soulless describes it well. If the Saturday night I visited was anything to go by, this place could be renamed the Marie Celeste. With poor beer and blaring TVs in every corner, I left pretty sharpish.

The Bear Hotel, Devizes

Came here for a Saturday evening drink recently. It was really busy in the back bar, a group of ladies in long gowns, meeting for pre-ball drinks, gave the place a pleasant upmarket atmosphere. Service was friendly, but as usual for pubs in Devizes I cannot recommend the beers that much. the 6X was its usual variable self. I find Wadworth's beers are never truly satisfying. Horizon was the best of a mediocre bunch.

The Welington Arms, Marlborough

The Ramsbury Gold here was superb, service was prompt and very friendly, and the meal we had was lovely. The pub itself has a large bar area, with a lower seating/dining area leading to the beer garden.

Punters consisted of tourists and locals, ranging from the 'well orf' to the 'down at heel'. It doesn't seem that upmarket, a bit like an extension to the local Ladbrokes. However, there's a nice friendly atmosphere, which with the wonderful beer is just what you want from a pub.

Ox Row, Salisbury

3.80 for a pint of London Pride, WTF? If only I'd read the reviews on here before venturing in. No wonder the place was utterly deserted.

The Old Vine, Winchester

Quite a pleasant place to sit and wile away a Saturday lunchtime. Very food orientated, but they served a nice pint of 'Timothy Taylor's Landlord' at a not too unreasonable price for the area.

The Eclipse Inn, Winchester

I must have gone into a completely different pub from everyone else. Sullen service, prices incredibly high, even for a pub close to the cathedral, out-of-date crisps! The 'Ringwood Best' was its saving grace, but with better pubs close-by, I won't be coming back here in a hurry.

The Crosse Keys, Bank

A cavern of a pub, with lots of atmosphere, so noisy you can hardly think. More real ales than you can shake a stick at, possibly all with cheesy xmas related names. I'd recommend the 'Escape Clause', one of the nicest pints I've had in a while. As usual for a Wetherspoons, but unusual for the City, the afternoon punters veer towards pensionable age, but after 5 it starts to fill up with suits. One thing I noticed, men outnumber women by about 30 to 1.

I want to know where all those women are going!?

The Bramley Inn, Bramley

Went in here for a pint or two recently during the week. I must admit it's changed a lot since my last visit. The atmosphere is much much nicer, beer is still as good as it ever was, and quick friendly service with a smile too. My only minus point is that it feels so much like a town centre sports bar, rather than a village pub. The TV is permanently switched on Sky (thankfully with no sound) its more Rhu Bar than Plough, if you know what I mean. With that said, I'll be coming here again, as I like it better than those other two pubs. Nearly forgot the fact that the back bar has been converted into a proper Indian Resaurant. I won't tell you how good it is, 'cos I don't want it to be packed when I next drop in.

The Swan, Sherborne St John

In the umpteen years I've visited this pub, I've seen more managers come and go than I've had hot dinners. However the current one seems to be the best of the bunch so far. Super beer and excellent food, and the service is by far the best its ever been.

The White Hart, Charter Alley

Dropped in here recently one Saturday as we were in the area. This is one of those pubs where conversation stops and everyone looks round at the strangers walking in. Everyone that is except the barman, who decided to completely ignore us. It was at this point that we 'should' have walked out. It didn't get any better, we were overcharged and had to ask for a price breakdown, begrudgingly getting a refund. To cap it all the beers were really poor. Needless to say we didn't stop for another and won't be coming back.

The Bear Hotel, Hungerford

WARNING: This is the most expensive place I have ever had the misfortune to drink at...wait for it... 4.50 for a pint of Old Speckled Hen. No wonder it was waitress service only, if I had known the price when I ordered, I would have walked straight out. Let this be a warning to others. Not much point in moaning about the decor, just imagine walking into an olde worlde coaching inn that used to be owned by Henry VIII or whoever, and finding yourself in an All Bar One or similar.

The Pineapple, Brimpton Common

This pub has a really nice atmosphere, with excellent service at the bar, and since the smoking ban, you can even breathe without an oxygen mask. The beer is wonderful, specially the Tim Taylor's Landlord, but at over 3 a pint its even leaving diesel behind in the price stakes. I haven't tried the food, but it always looks yummy when served up at the tables. Talking of the tables, isn't it time that the Elm hewn furniture was retired? The seats give you a severe numb bum, and all glasses need several wedges under them to maintain equilibrium. Luckily on my last visit there was no music in evidence, hopefully the Van Morrison and Bob Dillon tapes have finally disintegrated after being looped continually for what seems like millenia.

The New Inn, Strafield Saye

This was shut when we passed by one Saturday evening recently. I hope it hasn't fallen foul of the latest pub closures.

The White Hart, Sherfield on Loddon

Decided to try this pub, which I used to visit a lot during 2000/1, but don't think I'll be returning in a hurry. Firstly the service was dire, the staff preferring to serve the 'locals', even when they stroll to the bar 5 minutes after myself. Secondly the aforementioned boorish locals; barging past, pushing in, holding loud conversations with us in the middle. Thirdly the Youngs was far from the best example I've tasted recently. I really hate pubs like this, a senseless waste of drinking time.

The Jekyll and Hyde, Turgis Green

Visited the other evening and the service was dire. I waited over 10 minutes to get served at a nearly empty bar. One person serving and other kitchen staff just standing around, fiddling with cutlery and watching the queues build up. Of course, when the bar was empty the bar staff miraculously appeared again! Saving grace...a nice pint of bitter.

The Kings Arms Hotel, Dorchester

This is an upmarket hotel bar with very friendly and attentive staff. They have a good selection of well kept bitters including, on my last visit, a wonderful Timothy Taylor Golden Best. Fully No Smoking throughout. Recommended for people wanting a quiet drink and chat in pleasant surroundings.

The Red Lion, Mortimer West End

I knew I was in for trouble when the barman completely ignored my futile attempts to get attention and rushed to serve the locals, a cardinal sin in my book. However, the real low point was the meal; luke warm, indifferent service and completely overpriced for such small portions. The food here seems to have gone steadily downhill over the last few years, but the prices, of course, have not! The kitchen staff looked like they'd dropped in on their way home from school, and to top it all they were expecting a tip on the credit card machine. Fat Chance! I won't be heading back here in a hurry, even though the Badger Best is rather nice.

Wellington Arms Hotel, Stratfield Turgis

Excellent for a hotel bar. Reasonable prices, good service, and drinkable beer - albeit the ubiquitous Badger. Haven't tried the bar food, but it looks and smells great. Its just like relaxing in a posh relative's sitting room, so leave those jeans at home and dress-up for an enjoyable evening out.

31 May 2006 22:03

The Bramley Inn, Bramley

A difficult pub to rate, as the manager & staff seem to go out of their way to make you feel welcome, but the other customers, as the previous reviewer noted, put you right off. The bitter is always good though and there's a non-smoking room - which is nearly always empty - in which to escape from the rest of the punters, who seem to be engaged in some kind of High-Tar Smoke-Aid event.

Dexters Bar and Grill, Basingstoke

Went in here yesterday and after waiting ages to get served, found out they've stopped doing draft beer (except Guiness). So we all got up and walked out!

The Angel, Old Street

Just down the City Road from Old Street roundabout. Decent beer, friendly staff. I count 4 big screens but there are probably more upstairs. Interesting mix of customers, not too crowded, always seems to be seats when I'm there(!) My only gripe was that I can hardly breathe with the thick cigarette smoke. Thank goodness for the two doors! Another one to try.

Nelson's Retreat, Old Street

Modern pub on the busy road just by Old Street roundabout. Decent beer, friendly staff, interesting menu including numerous yummy Thai selections. A bit bright and noisy, with numerous TVs, juke box and pool teams all competing to be heard, but all-in-all better than it may look from outside. Try It.

The Bar Aquarium, Old Street

Of all the bars I could have chosen at lunchtime, I had to choose this one. Its difficult to comprehend how rude and disinterested the staff were. You may sometimes get one, but here all three lacked basic social skills. Avoid this one like the plague, specially as there are lots of places close with incredibly friendly staff.
