The Freemasons Tavern, Hove

What happened to this place? It used to be an okay boozer but it looks like no one has done any maintenance on it for years, all the seats have stuffing coming out of them and your elbows stick to the tables. Won't be back until they start to show some pride in the place.

The Ginger Fox, Albourne

Will re-open later this year as the Ginger Fox, part of the Gingerman restaurant chain. Should be good if the Ginger Pig is anything to go by.

The Blind Busker, Hove

Used to be pretty poor but popped in for a beer over the weekend and ended up staying for Sunday lunch - which was home cooked and excellent. The rest of the menu looks good, the beer is well kept and altogether it's a fine improvement on the Hogshead that was here before.

The Devils Dyke Hotel, Brighton

Crikey! You avoid a pub like the plague because it's decorated with 15 different types of floral wallpaper, serves no decent beer and thinks that a microwaved dish of nutrient free rubbish is **food** only to drop in to use the loos and find that it's had a complete make over. Progress!

The Robin Hood, Brighton

I'm afraid I disagree about the pizzas, they're not great. However, this is a top pub with good beer and great staff.

The Coopers Cask, Brighton

Having been dissappointed last year when the food went seriously downhill (but from a very high hill) the Cooper's has started to show a little of its old magic. Worth a revisit.

The George, Brighton

Get there early in good weather for a seat in the tiny beer garden. The vegetarian food is so good you wonder why you'd ever want to eat meat. A lovely pub.

The Coach and Horses, Westminster

Potentially a great pub... if you could get served. I only work around the corner but at lunch times it's a lottery to see if you can get a pint in before having to head back to the office. That said, this pub is better than any other in this area.

The Shakespeare, Victoria

It would take an absolute genius to think of a way to make this pub worse.

The Tiger Inn, East Dean

What's not to love about this place? Jaw droppingly pretty, fantastic food and great beer.
If you're coming from Brighton take the 12 or 13 bus from Churchill Square to Exceat and walk over the Seven Sisters to Crowlink, then into East Dean. There is a bus stop on the main road at the back of the pub that will take you home to Brighton. The best pub walk on the South Downs by some margin.

The Raven, Bath

Good beer and great pies.

Ship Anson, Portsmouth

OK food, very poor selection of beer, a bit grotty but near the Royal Docks and better than the offer there. Very pretty on the outside, which is where I suggest you stay unless it's raining stair rods, or there is some other compeling reason to go inside rather than finding somewhere better.

The Farm Tavern, Hove

Good selection of beers and the Sunday lunch is great value and better than most pubs in the area.

Connaught, Hove

The bar staff are some of the best I've ever come accross, they did everything they could to make us welcome and couldn't have been more attentive. Ash trays were regularly cleaned, you never had to wait long at the bar and the beer was good. This pub won't be for everyone, it isn't trendy and the decor in one of the rooms is a bit tired, but it is a great example of a proper local pub and we'll definitely be back.
Good for watching the sport in a family friendly place rather than the usual 'lads sport bar' atmosphere.

The Three Jolly Butchers, Brighton

A recent menu change means this pub now offers some of the best pub food in Brighton and Hove (since the sad decline of The Coopers Cask).
I had a generous and delicious slow roast belly pork with home made chilli jam in ciabatta for 5.95.
The pub was almost empty on a Saturday lunch time and those people who were around weren't eating so try this place out soon or it may stop serving good food, which would be a real shame.

The Devils Dyke Hotel, Brighton

8.5 out of 10? Are you kidding? This has to be one of the worst pubs I've ever been into. No real beer (gas tap only), do you people not know what a decent pub is? Yes the views are great but don't go up to the dyke and sit in a pub, go and walk about on the Downs and if you get thirsty walk down Fulking Escarpment and go to the Dog and Shepherd in Fulking - now that's a really great pub!
