The White Horse, Sandway

nothing on this pub since 2011 lead me to believe it has been sold but is now reopen. Good food, steak pudding and slow cooked belly pork plus several pints of an excellent oyster stout from whitstable. Pub deserves far better than its 3.9 rating.

6 Oct 2012 10:47

The Plough, Little London

can't see any mention of it on Fleurets??

4 Oct 2011 12:41

Three Horseshoes Inn, Sidlow Bridge

We only visit this pub twice a year when flying out of Gatwick, however the Landlord seems to recognise us!!! Excellent food as always, beer choice was varied and in good condition. Had a pint of the Challenger (?) stout brewed locally, nearer a porter than a Guiness but very tasty, hope you keep it however if the general public want Guiness unfortunately it is a business decision....shame! Will be back in late February for Sunday Lunch!

4 Oct 2011 12:31

The Carpenters Arms, Burghclere

Morris sides had a good evening at the Carpenters, BBB and Kingsdown were both in good form

23 Aug 2011 12:22

The Plough, Little London

Can't understand A Porters comments, I have never witnessed Terry (landlord) being disdainful to anyone, regular or visitor. We have always found him to be most welcoming.
Black beers are on at the Plough from time to time in the summer but tend to be out in force in the winter months i would suggest another visit and enjoy the roaring log fires.
Thanks from Customs & Exiles & Mayflower for an excellent evenings and we hope to visit soon Penny and Dave

23 Aug 2011 12:06

The Anchor, Cockwood

Visited on Friday afternoon, had an iffy pint of Otter Head which was changed without question for an excellent pint of Otter Ale. Nice location and a very interesting building. Had the steak and ale pie which was huge and made very good eating.

23 Aug 2011 12:06

Eagle Tavern, Rochester

good band playing in the bar and a good range of ales in the outside beer festival

3 May 2011 16:22

Golden Lion, Rochester

full of Rochester low life, beer and cider were running out as we asked for them, left the pub and went to the Eagle instead

3 May 2011 16:21

The Good Intent, Rochester

Customs and Exiles were looking for a post curry beer or several. Man of Kent rammed so we went up the road to the Good Intent, wise choice! excellent range of beers in their garden based beer festival , good value too

3 May 2011 16:19

The Man of Kent Ale House, Rochester

Customs and Exiles dance and play hard, retired to the MoK following a sucessful debut at the Sweeps festival. Excellent range of well kept beers as ever. Just what we needed pre curry

3 May 2011 16:17

The Globe on the Lake, Alresford

hope it has sorted itself out since last year at the watercress festival when they only had 2 staff behind the bar who kept disappearing out to the kitchen, leaving it 6 deep at the bar.

27 Apr 2011 10:47

Lloyds No 1, Basingstoke

Last time i went in there there were only 2 ales on, not good enough for a JDW establishment

27 Apr 2011 10:31

The Bakers, Basingstoke

Same pub wortman, it used to be a Hogshead

27 Apr 2011 10:25

Horse and Farrier Inn, Threlkeld

Excellent pub, the Sneck Lifter was on top form. Food looked good too

2 Dec 2010 12:19

The Golden Rule, Ambleside

Best pub in Ambleside. No food just good beer, open fire and plenty of locals.

2 Dec 2010 12:14

The William Henry, Weymouth

Much better than the other JDW (The Swan) down the road. More welcoming and the beer was of a far better quality

8 Jun 2010 10:57

Swan Inn, Weymouth

Beer was past its best and the whole place is too noisy!

8 Jun 2010 10:55

The Kings Arms, Weymouth

Folk festival last weekend showed the shortcomings, Courage Best and Directors ran out on Friday night as did the Westons cider! If you are expecting an influx of people sor the cellar out. Other than that the Caledonion bitter was in fine form.

8 Jun 2010 10:50

The Boot, Weymouth

A real gem, was only told about it on Friday, have been hanging out in there ever since! All the Ringwood beers are on offer and all in excellent condition, also 3 ciders available on draught which pleases Portside.
A proper pub!!!

8 Jun 2010 10:47

Sweeney and Todd, Reading

the pies are to die for!

3 Jun 2009 15:05

The Pineapple, Brimpton Common

beer overpriced and of only passable quality

The Royal Oak, Lasham

good beer choice and quality, nice garden to sit in and while away the hours if it is sunny

3 Jun 2009 14:39

3 Jun 2009 14:35

The Railway Arms, Alton

excellent beer range and quality as you would expect as the local brewery own the pub

3 Jun 2009 14:34

The Eight Bells, Alton

Proper pub, excellent beer, great atmosphere a credit to Altons brewing heritage

3 Jun 2009 14:33

The Raven, Bath

Now our favourite pub in Bath, Salamander comes a close second. Friendly /knowledgeable landlord. The house beers both raven and stark raven on top form. Excellent pies. You may even witness a killer Jenga fest!

8 Dec 2008 14:14

Porter, Bath

good basic pub, more of a students haunt but the beer and the blues are good!

8 Dec 2008 14:10

The Plough, Little London

Don't go in and try this years excellent Porter, there will be less for me!

3 Dec 2008 11:15

The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke

Whats Brewing reported their removal from the 2009 guide, however they are still putting a bill board outside claiming they are included!

Recent festival was good, however although there were plenty of 'black' beers advertised in the programme precious few made an appearnace at this particular outlet

3 Dec 2008 11:14

The George, Odiham

Saturday last was the Odiham Extravaganza that pulls in a lot of people. The Eagles were performing outside the George, went in for a drink to find the business side of the bar deserted, plenty of people were waiting to be served, what a way to run a business, needless to say we decamped to the Bell! where we had an excellent pint of Adnams Old ale

3 Dec 2008 11:10

The Star, Godalming

Excellent pub, Portside was very taken with the ciders and perrys on offer, took her back to last week in the Red Lion at Swanage (another good cider venue if you are ever passing). Recommended if you find yourself in this facinating historic town

15 Sep 2008 09:16

Calleva Arms, Silchester

Forgot to post the review of this one. The Eagles joined Kennet Morris for a memorable evening at the Calleva. Several hundred(?) students from the nearby dig joined us and a fine time was had by all. The pub actaully ran out of beer for a short spell due to demand ! The landlord must have wondered what hit him it being a Monday night. HSB was on good form that night

9 Sep 2008 15:52

The Hogget, Hook Common

Thankyou tadley musher for confirming it is a restaurant and not a pub, may try it for a meal sometime though!

9 Sep 2008 15:47

The Red Lion, Swanage

The infamous Hook Eagles have just completed the Folk Festival here and can thoroughly recommend this pub. 3 regular ales available plus another 4 ever changing 'guests' Had excellent pints of Summer Lightning, Otter, Cocky Hop and others which due to the volume consumed I have forgotten. The other half matched me pint for pint with their excellent selection of draught cider with the inevitable consequenses! Very good Sunday lunch

9 Sep 2008 15:34

The Weyhill Fair, Weyhill

Thought the beer was average and expensive

26 Aug 2008 16:09

Radway Inn, Sidmouth

Nice pub, excellent beer and taunton traditional cider

12 Aug 2008 12:13

Old Ship Inn, Sidmouth

good pub, good beer!

12 Aug 2008 12:12

The Swan Inn, Sidmouth

Lovely old pub, seems to be base camp during Sidmouth Festival week, excellent beer. Look out for the radioactive cheddar cider!

12 Aug 2008 12:10

The Devonshire Inn, Sticklepath

Long may the Devonshire continue, a bit scruffy at the edges but has real charm. Landlord and Landlady are lovely and the beer is excellent.

12 Aug 2008 12:05

The Tom Cobley, Spreyton

Wonderful pub, supurb range of beer. How can they do it at 2.30 a pint!!?? Landlord passionate about the pub and his ales, just the right attributes for a successful business. Nice to see some 'black beer' at this time of year, usually have to wade through the ever increasing number of 'summer golden ales' to find one

12 Aug 2008 12:03

Queens Arms, Basingstoke

Have not been in this pub for about 25 years, internally it does not seem to have changed a bit! Good range of beers in excellent condition. Nice touch if you leave your mobile number they will text you when each new guest ale is put up. Will not leave it so long before a repeat visit

21 Jul 2008 09:17

Lobster, Sheringham

Some of the Eagles overindulged at the Lobsters beer festival which was excellent. Very pleasant terrace to sit and while away a few hours. Reservations about the restaurant here though (the stables), trying hard with the food but served a couple of less than average dishes, need to concentrate on the little things like making sure the wine glasses are clean, the tables are not sticky and also make repairs to many of the dining chairs.

8 Jul 2008 08:49

Windham Arms, Sheringham

The Eagles have just done the local Lobster Potties festival which was well supported by this pub. Good honest local with an excellent range of beers

8 Jul 2008 08:44

The Kings Arms, Weymouth

Visited as part of the Wessex Folk Festival that was taking place on the harbourside. Very good pint of Directors and only 2.50 a go. Excellent Irish session going on when we visited. Would recommend a visit to the Kings if you are in the Weymouth area

9 Jun 2008 09:22

The Livingstone, Bath

often passed it but never been brave enough to go in!

4 Jun 2008 15:02

The Star Inn, Bath

Extremely interesting building both internally and externally. The other halfs favourite in Bath. friendly locals and excellent beer. Don't miss this one if you are in the city it is well worth the walk up the hill

4 Jun 2008 15:00

The Salamander, Bath

favourite pub in Bath, nice building, excellent beers. Toilets however leave a little to be desired but it won't put me off going there!

4 Jun 2008 14:58

The Barley Mow, Englefield Green

Agree very nice setting but never found the beer particularly good

4 Jun 2008 14:57

The Beehive, Englefield Green

Visited a couple of weeks ago on a saturday night and by 9.00 pm we were the only two in the place. Why???
Pub has had a makeover, decor very nice and beer was very good,(compared with last visit before new landlord took over when the beer was poor there were hardly any of the advertised Gales wines for the girls and there was water cascading through the toilet ceiling) come on Englefield Green support it or lose it!!

4 Jun 2008 14:55

The Happy Man, Englefield Green

Never ventured in here before the smoking ban as it was difficult to see across the bar. However have now managed a visit and was not disappointed, excellent pub with excellent beer

4 Jun 2008 14:53

The Hogget, Hook Common

According to the dictionary a hogget(t) is a sheep not a pig?? Walked in for a drink and straight out again. Set up for diners not drinkers.

4 Jun 2008 14:49

De Havilland Arms, Elvetham Heath

souless estate/chain pub, beer is not too bad though!

4 Jun 2008 14:46

St James Tavern, Winchester

excellent example of a corner local. Very cosy

4 Jun 2008 14:44

The Eclipse Inn, Winchester

Annual counting house for the Christmas Clog tour (in aid of Naomi House) Landlord and Landlady always very supportive. Excellent beer especially the Ringwood Porter. See you on 13th December 2008!

4 Jun 2008 14:42

The Fox, North Waltham

Beer usually in top condition, excellent pint of Braodside last time I visited and at only 2.50 a pint - bargin. Have eaten in restaurant and can recommend the souffle and the venison

4 Jun 2008 14:32

The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney

One of the best pints of Gales HSB in the south, always immaculate. Good honest pub (very few of these about nowadays). Starting point for the Eagles (Hook) on Wassail night, long may it continue

3 Jun 2008 17:03

The Crown and Horns Inn, East Ilsley

The Eagles (Hook) had just been entertaining at the East Illsley sheep fair when unfortunately the beer tent somehow managed to run out of beer (they had john smiths on offer but no way can i liken that to beer as i know it!). So the boys retired to the Crown and Thorns. An excellent choice, friendly atmospheric and above all good beer. We will be back! (for those who were somewhat bemused when we arrived we don't usually 'black up' to go for a beer)

3 Jun 2008 14:16

The Jolly Farmer, Cliddesden

A village pub I can walk to (although it is bit of an effort from the wrong side of the M3!). Has gone through several changes of ownership. Present owners seem to know how a pub should be run. Good food and an excellent range of beers. Got used to the usual predictable 'guest ales' in North Hampshire, glad to report the jolly breaks the mould. Recently 2 cracking beers from Titanic (one a stout, us black beer drinkers are often neglected!) and a favourite from Bath - Barnstormer. Keep up the good work!

3 Jun 2008 14:08

The Bramley Inn, Bramley

Took the infamous Hook Eagles there last year on a cold grey May evening. Excellent reception from the locals who seemd to enjoy the entertainment. Landlord very generous with the beer which was well kept. Hope we can return again

3 Jun 2008 14:01

The Plough, Little London

One of the only uspoiled, genuine pubs in North Hampshire. Terry is a gracious host and keeps an excellent pint. always something different to try. Winter time, a pint of Ringwood Porter and a blazing log fire - bliss!

3 Jun 2008 13:59

The Sun Inn, Bentworth

This used to be my favourite 'winter pub'. Got out of the habit of going there for a few years until the Sun featured on a local TV South Programme. Decided to indulge in some nostalgia. On entry nothing seemed to have changed however although we visited early evening and it was not at the weekend all the tables were reserved. My wife and i were thus forced to stand and after 1 drink made a hasty exit, which was a shame as the beer quality was good. Too much of a restaurant now so won't be revisiting.

30 May 2008 16:36

The Man of Kent Ale House, Rochester

My Border Morris side did the Sweeps Festival last weekend. Beer festival at the Gordon House was very disappointing so we decided to try a 'real' pub. What a gem, excellent selection of ales, top landlord and very friendly locals. This will be the Base Camp for the Eagles in the coming years! Hope you guys were entertained by our brief visit on Sunday afternoon.
