The Old Nag's Head, Manchester

Ye gods, avoid at all costs, especially on a Friday which turns out to be a really bad karaoke night now.

The Old Nag's Head used to be a really great pub; nice, clean and airy but with an almost intimate atmosphere, beer well kept, friendly staff. As someone mentioned in an earlier review, "a hidden gem". Now, it wouldn't be amiss to be used on the TV show "Shameless".

On our first visit in a while, we were confronted by the worlds largest gathering of huge-bellied out-of-tune karaoke blokes. The beer was rank in the extreme (even the spirits, which my wife was drinking, were "off", the Theakstons was like vinegar, etc), the place had a really gross old sweat funk about it, and I've never ever been to a pub where the karaoke didn't only take over the main bar but was even piped into the snig via a badly tuned flat screen TV so you couldn't even have a conversation.

The staff made you feel like you were getting in the way, manky glasses, manky floors, manky tables. If the HSE went in on a flash inspection, I reckon it'd be closed on the spot.

Needless to say, we weren't in there long and won't be going back in a rush.

St James Gate, Amsterdam

I've been to this pub/bar a few times over the last couple of years (when wanting a typically Englishman-Abroad feel), and it's really quite nice. The staff are really friendly and chatty, the beer is always well kept, and the bar food's pretty good too.

The Polygon, Levenshulme

What a hovel - thank god it's closed.

Carousel, Reddish

I can't agree with the last post more strongly. This place is the pits. It used to be a great pub some 7-8 years ago, but now it's just Chav Central. I ended up in there on sufference, and suffered!

There are much nicer pubs in the locality (such as the Hinds Head) - don't waste your hard-earned in "The Carra"!

The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield

Always a great place for a pint at the end of the working day, a cold Saturday afternoon, a hot summers evening. Never had a bad pint in the Brit's, great staff, not overly pricey for the edge of the city centre.

Watch out for mad late middle-aged men with bad attitudes, no manners, and guitar cases (little tin Hitler's who think anyone under 40 are scum, basically).

The Blue Bell, Levenshulme

Had my first taste of the "new and improved" Bluebell on Saturday evening (after walking past the old version practically every day for the past 5 years!) and was hugely impressed.

Usual array of Sam Smith's, really nice decor, outstanding staff - what more could you want from a good local.

And the Sovereign is top-notch!!

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Bring back the old landlord Knoxy - he really knew how to run this place!

M19 Bar, Levenshulme

Not a bad place - went in for the first time last weekend and was pleasently surprised (I expected it to be a bit "shiny" albeit in Levenshulme!). Decent cocktails (if that's your "bag"), bottled beers and a couple on draught.

Will give it another go sometime soon.

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

I travel to London fairly frequently, and had meant to pop into The Chandos and give it a go for a while. A fortnight ago I did just that, and wasn't disappointed.

Two of my favourite pubs locally (in Manchester) are Sinclair's Oyster Bar, and The Boar's Head (in Stockport), both Sam Smith's pubs, and their bitter's and pale ale's are always top notch (alas, it's only Sinclair's that ever has the Tadcaster bitter on, however).

The beer was good, the staf were friendly, the pub itself was nice (much prefer a nice dark wood pub to a shiney pine-and-chrome monstrosity any day!), and the prices were good (surprisingly so for London, and in comparisson to other Sammies pubs).

I'd recommend the Chandos to anyone who fancied a decent pint in a decent boozer.
