| Excellent pub, full of character and architectural curiosities. Like many Sam Smiths pubs the beer is always top quality (i know it's not to everyone's taste) and refreshingly old school. The ale here has the advantage of not sitting too long in the barrel and pipes like so many nearby pubs that seem to offer a 'choice' of different (bland, generic, inoffensive) beers. | How anyone can even mention crap holes like The Arkley The Gate and The Rising Sun as being better than here? ...they are just sanitised feeding stations bereft of character. This place is actually a pub where people go to socialise rather than pose and skull swill down - the Gate in particular, am surprised they haven't dispensed with tables as replacing them with troughs could double their turnover. anonymous - 9 Apr 2017 17:37 |
| Good location is the best that can be said about this hostelry. The wines are way over-priced and the staff are rude. The ladies toilets need an overhaul and do smell of the main sewer. It's not a patch on other pubs in the vicinity and I won't be rushing back anytime in the near future. The Arkley - The Gate - The Rising Sun beat this establishment in every department. | This is the best pub in the surrounding area by miles. It has a lot of character both inside and out with a cracking beer garden that has a retractable roof. There is a big selection of beers and the Guinness is excellent. All the real ales are very well kept, I can recommend the Deuchars.
