Liked it, very well kept beer, chips ok though they should really give you sauce with it and a napkin.
rainlight - 25 Mar 2015 21:42

blackdragon66 - 27 Mar 2013 09:56
Controlled by a large chain and showing all the signs, but offering good value. Only pub in the village with Wells Bombadier at 2.49 a pint :)

With some work, this could easily be the best pub around!
RogerP - 18 Mar 2013 19:14
bland if unthreatening high street pub. Done to a standard that will be pleasant enough to passers by but not high enough to encourage regular visits or a long stay.
theoneandonlyjoe - 10 Sep 2012 15:55
Love what they have done with the place, great decor. service was friendly and fast and the prices very reasonable.

Will be returning again and again.

Don't Bother! We were trying to get a bit of lunch and a drink at 1.30 on a weekday recently, so we stayed despite the empty restaurant area and lack of staff. Bad mistake, but by the time we knew it, it was too late to move on. Whatever we ordered was unavailable and the service was poor - they were taking their delivery in (loudly) past our table. But that didn't excuse cremated battered (stale) fish and chips and a very long, long wait. They dropped the puds (I would have fled after the first mouthful of the mains, but we had a guest so it was difficult) and swore loudly, then a long while later came to us with what they must have had left to try and make an Eton Mess from. A plateful of whipped up cream and some sad berries and we played 'hunt the meringue'. Ugh.Staff wandered around looking stressed and I give it a 1 rating only for the good quality vanilla ice cream. The bar area was like the 'land that time forgot'. Abandon hope all ye who enter here.... A waste of time and money, sad, we have a catering background so can be forgiving, but this was too much. No response to my complaint to head office, either.

Very reasonable food and drink prices. Sometimes the bar service and quick and efficient, and other times it is slow and poor.

It was at it's best 5 years ago before too many 18-24 year old Sutton clubbers started beginning their nights in here. Have seen some terrible fights outside the place.

Hadn't gone in a long time before returning for my birthday with around 50 of my friends and the pub was reasonably quiet but had a much nicer atmosphere to it. That was a Wednesday night so not sure how it is at weekends these days.

Is this still an Ember Inn? It no longer comes up if you search on their web site...

john_the_jester - 5 Feb 2011 11:02
Met a couple of friends in there 1 Wednesday evening a few weeks ago for a few jars prior to a meal at the excellent Charcoal Grill just up the road. The bar service is not the speediest, it has to be said, but several bog standard real ales (e.g. London Pride and Youngs Ordinary) are usually available on handpump. Beer prices can be very reasonable whenever there are special offers on. A fairly civilised atmosphere midweek, but can get overrun by the local pre-Sutton clubbing crowd at weekends.

How much do you want?
A pint, of course.
A pint? Have you gone raving mad? You must be joking.
A pint is a perfectly normal quantity to take.
You don't seriously expect me to believe that.
.....yes, it's a trademark of the Harrow but I don't think they appreciate their homage to Mr Hancock, once a near neighbour at 23 Railway Cuttings.
KittyChumley - 29 Dec 2009 15:05
Typical Ember Inn. Not a bad pint, not a bad price (2.60 for bitter). Five real ales on. Only downside was having to ask for a top up and still having room left over for more in the glass.
twineyboy - 16 May 2009 22:34
You can expect to wait a long time for bar service, usual story..... bar food being ordered or young people buying a bottle of bud with a debit card.
As a real beer drinker it's not worth going as staff cannot change barrels.
raymondstedman - 20 Aug 2008 13:41
Used to be nice, even when it became a Big Steak pub, but the refit a few years ago is horrible. The atmosphere is now young chav. Nice building, I used to like the old panelling
Timbosxm - 6 Aug 2008 21:34
Rarely can a pub be better named. It is becoming quite a "HarrowInn"g experience.
KittyChumley - 5 May 2008 17:25
This pub suffers from being an ancient building just off an ancient crossroads, meaning customers coming from the north have to find ingenious ways of even getting into the parking area, which is normally blocked off by traffic.

There my sympathy runs out. The beer (Everards when I was there) is OK, but my wife's first choice of food was off, and the near-replacement food looked and tasted like it was yesterday's normal first-choice food. Clueless staff. Not a family pub, by design, either. I wish I could be positive - it is a lovely building. Sorry.

arkaye - 23 Apr 2008 22:32
The Harrow was never much of a pub - wooden panelling and dull atmosphere - now thanks to re-furbishment it's even worse! It now has no pub 'feel' to it at all - everything's been ripped out and knocked through to make one big bar that looks like...a hotel lobby? an airport lounge from the 70's? - certainly nothing like a pub! Completely characterless and not a place to go drinking - although the food may be OK -didn't try. By the way I wouldn't travel miles to come to the Sunday pub quiz - it's a 'Family Fortunes' type quiz where you have to guess the public's answers to various questions i.e. it's not a general knowledge quiz at all. And there are only ten questions read out over the PA by a bimbo barmaid - don't bother - wish they hadn't!
discerningdan - 17 Feb 2008 13:07
this pub can be teen-friendly,expecialy at weekends where pubescents rival for service from their pals behind the jump.anyways, some absolute berk, heavily sweating, carrying a saxophone[think busker with a tie]ruined my girlfriends outfit by knocking over our table over xmas.no apology.who let this pest in?security?wont be back thanks.
livelyjoe - 13 Jan 2008 00:13
I visited The Harrow with my friend at about 1 p.m. on Thursday 13th.September and was immediately impressed with how clean the pub was. We ordered our drinks and found a table to look at the menu. Having decided what we wanted, my friend went to the bar to order and was served promply by a well presented member of staff. A few minutes later the cutlery and condiments were delivered to the table and the food arrived within 10-12 minutes from the time we ordered. It was very well presented and cooked perfectly. Within a few minutes of us finishing our food a member of staff came to clear our plates and asked if everything was alright with our meals and if we required any desserts or coffee, which we declined. Having read some of the other comments about this pub, I think it must have improved dramatically as our visit was perfect - will definately go again and recommend it to others.
philcripps - 14 Sep 2007 09:53
Have just been there for lunch today and it took them nearly an hour to microwave a couple of portions of chips. When we said that we would like a refund as we had to go, as our lunchhour was nearly up, it took them another five minutes to give us a whole 2.50 back. Since the new management the service has gone downhill rapidly.... even the bar staff agreed with me that things had gone downhill. I will be looking for a new pub to drink in from now on!!!!
smallperson - 26 Jul 2007 14:24
Revisited after 2yr gap, read the reviews. Agree with
not enough seats after 4:30, more thought to the floor lay out could provide more seats. Service generally is half hearted and needs some smiles both behind the bar and from the kitchen. I ordered fish and chips and paid 6.15!! for a very ordinary portion. Most of the meals seemed to be a quid or two over the top. Used to like this pub and so I'm disappointed with what I saw on Friday. Ok selection of bottled beers and I stuck to Leffe for a change from my normal real ales. Also has Real Budva, not that US crap.
Colourshifter - 24 Jun 2007 17:18
poor, poor pub. rubbish service, no seating available whatsoever (even on a monday evening). NB this doesnt mean the pub is popular it means it doesnt have enoug seats. the barstaff are more interested in themselves than attending to any of the customers, waited 15 minutes to get served wasnt another soul at the bar.
anonymous - 7 May 2007 16:18
This was a good pub, nb the WAS. There are new management which has slowed down the service. The main bar guy is as good as ever but cannot carry the new staff. The new management are rarely seen whilst the existing staff seem to be doing all the work The ale remains good, the food mediocre and the atmosphere good.
anonymous - 15 Jan 2007 17:44
Not a bad pub at all. The staff seem friendly enough and the barmaids seem to have a tendancy of calling the blokes babe all the time which made me laugh. They put up with me and friend with his awfull chat up lines the other week so get extra points for that alone and are to be frank easy on the eye. Makes a change from Sutton although i think alot of people move on to sutton after.
anonymous - 9 Nov 2006 16:00
Very supprised by the comments. Staff will go out of the way to help you,,, food is lovely and not badly priced. Quiz is gd fun. only problem is trying to find a seat,
sezd1987 - 4 May 2006 19:12
Good beers but on a friday or saturday night there is NEVER anywhere to sit indoors. You also get a lot of corporate suits who come in here after a hard day 'in the city'.
pianoman - 18 Apr 2006 18:59
quite surprised by comments below - although I'm only here on the odd lunchtime, beer is usually in good nick, and service friendly.
hotrods - 2 Apr 2006 10:13
ps. the food is disgusting brake brothers standard. I would rather eat the dead than go back here to eat.
biggestfrank - 31 Mar 2006 04:31
the harrow is for half-wits from low rent areas to appear with their wretched old slappers on a friday and saturday night on the assumption they are in for a 'right good posh night out' before they drag their partners (rape victims) off for a splendid night in one of suttons charming nightspots. the rest of the week it is the usual corporate coldness.
biggestfrank - 31 Mar 2006 04:30
The Cheesecake is the best... the rest of the food is pretty crap!!
Beca - 22 Jan 2006 21:00
Strange place, varies dramatically. Beer's normally OK, if a bit expensive. Service from very welcoming through to rude. Generally clean, but can be very smoky.
johnbabercomb - 1 Dec 2005 22:26
the harrow is a great pub.is a shame about refit tho smoking area too small, also the short barman is very rude, has no customer skills and is always asking people to by him a drink, superb food, best stella in cheam.
skippybushkangaroo - 15 Dec 2004 19:18
Truly shocking service, the landlord was more interested in fondling the barstaff than serving, and the barstaff just ignored us! Food, when it eventually arrived, was microwavable pap. If you want to eat, walk a few yards to the excellent Village Charcoal Grill. If you want a pint, go to the Red Lion.
Mac - 21 Oct 2004 11:31
Nice interior, but very busy and not the cheapest. A good meeting place as commented before, but move onto better things.
Alan - 10 Sep 2004 16:57
What has happened to the Harrow ?

Was never too atmospheric, but , as alluded to below, you could at least get a good feed. Had lunch in there with the missus the other day, and the food was absolutely awful.
It really hurts me when I see pubs like the Harrow. In good positions, in nice places, in big old buildings, they become complacent. Becasue of where it is , the Harrow will always be relatively busy, but think of what a pub it could be, with some atmosphere, maybe a jukebox, pool table. Maybe just some LIFE!

Think of The Old Bank in Sutton - in a good position, next to the station - and they make the most of it. The place is thriving. The staff are friendly, there is a genuine sense of community there. THIS IS WHAT THE HARROW COULD BE LIKE!
matthew - 9 Jul 2004 16:17
Excellent pub
Lovely open fires
Does a good steak & chips

Steve - 11 May 2004 17:23
This pub used to be superb until Ember Taverns came along and ruined it. The beer is alright though a bit expensive
John - 24 Jan 2004 15:41
lost eight quid on the golf machine due to the machine turning itself off during my back swing. and the land lord didnt believe me when i asked for the money back!!(tony 2 pies)
Tony 2 pies - 17 Dec 2003 19:42
Wicked Food, sane people.
The Groove - 4 Jun 2003 15:29
