user reviews of the Lion, New Basford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I was probably in the Lion the same time as Ellisref. It's been almost 6 years since I was last in Basford and I enjoyed my visits to the Fox & Crown and the Horse & Groom. But, the Lion was on a different level. Service from the young lady was excellent. She was even happy to grant me a retrospective CAMRA discount on ordering a second half. It's 15p off per pint of ale or cider. The ale selection in itself was excellent - Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Bass, Pentrich Red Skies, Shiny Dr Dank, Blue Bee Triple Hop, Purity Longhorn IPA, Beartown Crème Brulee, Wilde Child Hedonistic Experience (described as a chocolate ganache stout), Beermats Charismatic, Magpie Belong To Earth & Bath Gem. But, my eyes were eventually drawn to a cider blackboard - Charnwood Dabinett, Bottle Kicking Cider Company Scrummage, Broadoak Purple Haze, Skidbrooke General Ludd, Heck's Porter's Perfection, Orchard Revival Putloe Pucker & Weston's Old Rosie. 4 ciders I'd never had before. So, I enjoyed a half of each. Staying inside, I managed to steer clear of any doggy doo. In fact, I spent a very pleasant hour or so here, leaving me well behind my planned schedule! Another great Nottingham pub.

Good select of ales, mainly local, and ciders. Extremely dog friendly (award winning) sadly some owners need to be reminded to clean up in the garden after their charges - mainly pitbulls (dogs and owners).

Another real ale gem. Excellent choice and quality, a real old-fashioned pub with loads of character. They have a feature inn the bar where you can view down a deep shaft into the cellar area, presumably this is an old delivery shaft to the cellar. The food looks very good, live music (good standeard live jazz on Sunday afternoons) and other styles throughout the week. Great mix of ages here, all very friendly and as a pub should be. Within sight of the old Shipstones Gold Star brewery building tucked away in Basford, Nottingham. Tram stop runs a few yards away. Various events and festivals. Well worth a visit.

Very good on my last visit. My favourite out of the three on the Basford Tram Route. Excellent wide choice of beers, styles and strengths and quality pints all round.

I was there in winter this time, but there is a large beer garden for use in the summer.

Right next to Shipstone Street Tram Stop.

Great atmosphere, friendly locals, great choice of real ales, free live music. A must visit if you're in the area - and the tram stops here as well! What more do you want? A legendary hostelry and deservedly so.

The signs still say Batemans but it has changed ownership and no worse off for that. In fact the beer range has possibly improved (selection-wise that is). We had a mix of Castle Rock; Rhymney and Celt brews which were all fine. Easy walk from Shipstone Street tram stop. Outside seating and smoking areas. Forthcoming ales are advertised on the blackboard and prices were about average for Nottingham.
You can easily combine a visit to The Lion with The Horse and Groom just round the corner.

Visited 27/7/10, 5pm

Cracking pub. Quiet at the time I visited but I can imagine it getting pretty lively. About nine beers on offer. The first pint I had was a bit hazy and didn't taste quite right. Maybe the end of the barrel. Second pint was much better. 15p discount for CAMRA members. Will definitely call again.

Still one of may pubs in town - well worth the tram ride out of the centre. Seems to have survived being taken over, beer range seems to have shrank a bit though.
Stunned this isnt in the good beer good, compared to some of the total piss-holes they did include!

I'm also surprised ny the low rating. This isn't a great pub, but it's a solid 6/10.

Having spotted the Lion on my way to the Fox & Crown made a point of calling here on my way back to the city. Very surprised at the low rating, can only presume it was bad in the past or the low ratings are made by music lovers rather than beer lovers. Found the beers excellent and the staff and customers friendly. Will definitely return on my next visit to Nottingham.

I have seen many a good musician at the open mike nights (Thursdays) but I am sorry to say that they have taken the road to qickly becoming a clique set up.

I hope they stop before they reach the point of no return.
Already I have noticed so many talented people no longer attending.
What started as the best open mike in Nottingham has very quickly lost the plot.
If you only wish friends to play then have a party at your house and leave the pubs to real musicians.

this pub just symbolises red-brick industrial nottingham. the beer is great, the garden is a sun-trap and it does rick's pork scratchings - awesome!!!! i wish it was nearer to town. just a wee bit pricey, that's all

Wanted two beers and had to return one that had gone to vinegar. Disappointed that we could not have a refund but had to have another beer we did not want. The quality of the other beers were good though.

Beer quality has been consistently good of late - Tree returning seems to have made all the difference. Lovely new wooden floor. All the beers at the St George's beer festival were absolutely lovely. Highly recommended

Beer quality seems to have gone down definitely since my last review.
Sandalf - 17 Feb 2007 17:11
Wow this is probably what pubs would by like in heaven , i'm giving it a 10 out of 10.
anonymous - 10 Dec 2006 09:42
great, great pub. if this was in the city centre it would be rammed every night
cantonacantona - 21 Aug 2006 17:38
9 ales on last night, every one I had was spot on. Delicious.
Sandalf - 24 Jun 2006 00:36
Music is OK at night if it is your fancy, but too loud with no escape. Beer is fine BUT the pumps run out very frequently with no replacements - really VERY POOR - no excuse for this just poor staff and management.
beerdragun - 13 Apr 2006 15:57
pub was nice few in on a monday early doors, music bit too loud and the toilets were disgusting if they could sort out this would be a nice pub.

brilliant love this place, my top reccommendations

A truly great pub - lots of choice of quality real ales and the biggest selection of milds I've ever seen - also free live music and proper pub food. Gets suddenly busy after a tram pulls up outside!
Used to be a popular stop on the tram pub crawl but we now stay all night. Beware of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' a strong ale which can take you by surprise after a couple.

Summer in the beer garden. All it needs is one knobhead to park his car and turn his music up so that everyone can hear it while the rest of us would be ashamed to admit to liking such music, probably an off-duty policeman. Luckily, I'd been to the shop so some milk accidentally fell into his car. Hope it didn't smell too much.

This beer garden would be better without children too.
palmwinedrinkard - 11 Jun 2004 12:04
FANTASTIC!! and now with its own tramstop as well, on my last 2 visits there were 9 beers on handpump!!

The open mike session on Thursdays is worth listening to
Cobbo - 16 May 2004 14:56
Great pub! Ten beers, music Thurs - Sat nights and jazz on Sunday afternoons. A good mix of ages is always the sign of a good pub. The new tram stops right outside.
