user reviews of the Brewery Tap, Reading

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closed and probably going to be converted into flats. Shame but nobody wanted it even though it was on the market as a pub for months.

This pub is currently closed and up for lease after the council turned down an application for strippers/lap dancers/late night drinking and other such debauchery!!

Not impressed with new look. You can never tell when it's going to be open and always quiet. Entry policy uncertain and pretty much ad hoc. Sometimes a sports top is not allowed, next day it's full of them. No consistency with their policy.

Why bother with the walk if uncertain it will be open or you will be allowed in.

Don't see how they will get away with live music and club nights. Previous landlords got in a lot of trouble with the council when they did it owing to complaints from the neighbours.

Refurbed and re-opened. London Pride and GK IPA on which were well kept when I sampled the other day. The front area has been spruced up and is more of a diner/bar area. Apparently there are plans for live music/club nights downstairs.

An improvement, let's see how it progresses.

A bit of an embarrassment to the name really. Three hand pumps but only London Pride on which was OK. Almost totally empty on a Friday night although that could be due to Reading playing at home and there being no Sky Sports. Further bar at the back with three pool tables.

Reopened under new management. Pride and Bombardier available. Not much change from previous, still have the huge pool room out the back. Beer not much to write home about. Could well struggle without a little imagination being applied.

The London Pride looked like there was something living in it, I'm glad it wasn't my drink. The bar staff looked as if they really didn't care for customers having the audacity to actually want a drink, and the toilets had a very unsavoury bouquet.

Other than that, it was ok.

Return visit on Sunday afternoon found gents toilet covered in the previous nights barf. If that's the standard then I'm not daring to drink anything that isn't bottled.

Not overly impressed, my Bombadier was a bit tinny tasting and the music was pretty loud for 6pm (yes I know, Grandad alert but 6pm?!?). A number of pool tables and a decent jukebox give it some plus points, but I didn't see much to tempt me back again really.

My 'local'. Great place, shame Eddie's gone though.

Agree with some of the comments on here about the staff attitude being appalling - especially the Manager. My wife and I (with 2 young family friends) were forefully kicked out one quiet friday lunchtime for apparently sitting in an area that was closed ! Still can't quiet believe what happened (my family wouldn't say boo to a goose).

Shame - this used to be my local and could be a really nice little boozer, but would suggest you tread carefully if you go here.

Surprised about some of the previous reviews never had any problems with the staff at this place. Been for food, which is good, but only at lunch times so can't really comment on that side too much.

This place really comes into its own as a place to drink though, always get served really quick and great atmosphere, absolutely love it.

Oh and juke box is best I have come across.

This place is great!

Madcap - 4 Jan 2006 16:41
Veri nice place with a good number of pool tables plus a juke box!!!!!!! BRILL

Staff however, think you need to find more polite ones

Nice decor and layout and friendly bar-staff, liked the cute, larege-headed dark eyed girl there and it was odd being served by an American bloke, not an aussie bloke or Polish girl.

No cask ales on because "they won't keep over Christmas" (!) and no food as it was "busy" but then we were slung out at 11pm on Christmas Eve 'cos the pub wasn't busy enough (though we were being pretty loud).

This place could be great but I get the feeling from my encounter and other reports here that the manager either has a bit of an attitude problem when it comes to putting themselves out for food and other less profitable things offered or that they're a bit skint and desperete. I think it's the former.

Shame but as pubs go in Reading, this is still better than most.

Went back there for a few on Friday night and it's gone downhill.....

I rang Friday afternoon to make sure we could get a bite to eat in there and was told that food was served until 8:30. Arrived in there at 6:30 only to be told by a fairly smug, obnoxious bar manager that they don't do food on Friday because it's "a busy pub".

I've seen the tap on a busy Friday night and that definitely wasn't busy. Wonder if the staff attitude has anything to do with it?

One of my old haunts when I used to live in Reading - had great bar staff for a while but they were a bit crap towards the end.

Definitely one of the better pubs in Reading for a pint.
brodie_bruce - 2 Dec 2005 12:55
Excellent pub for an after work drink. Good brews, lively atmosphere - just don't throw your weight around too much, it's close to the cop shop, so it's probably frequented heavily by the fuzz.
oz_chick - 28 Nov 2005 16:44
There's some sponsorship available if you've got a gift of the chat... otherwise it's a reasonable place and above average for Reading
thebigbosh - 12 Sep 2005 23:12
Bad tempered and abusive bar staff/manager. I would not go there again.
nomerac - 21 Jul 2005 12:58
Nothing special, although compared to most pubs in Reading it would rate above average. Pool tables out the back are a bonus.
golden_wonder - 22 Apr 2005 15:54
Not bad, its just that there are better places in town, its still an alright place to go though
DaveNez - 21 Mar 2005 01:35
Good Pool tables, good beer (Stella in Stella glasses in Reading shocka), nice referbishment.
gobeerbuy - 13 Jan 2005 16:35
Decent pub that used to frequent when living in Readin about 5 years ago.Good beer and football and a proper pub as opposed to the slop served up at the Oracle...
mattyd - 7 Jan 2005 16:55
Good place to go for a few pints and a few games of pool.
ANDREW - 10 Nov 2004 14:41
Unrecognisable when compared to memories of how it was in the early 90s, a great place to drink or watch sport
Acid Sorceror - 18 Feb 2004 10:06
Pool tables which are always free! Also sells a pint of Stella which will have you feeling stoned within 5 minutes!
noeth - 9 Dec 2003 18:24
