please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub appears to be undergoing a refurbishment at present. There was certainly work on-going when we passed by on Saturday. The signs are still up. So maybe it will re-open as a pub. Instead we continued up the street and started a crawl of Coventry in the Twisted Barrel Brewery & Tap House, which is not listed on here, but thoroughly recommended.

It is closed again, after a return it to its former glory as a music venue.

Reopened as the Beer Engine in early July with real ale & regular live music - just like the old Beer Engine

Re-opened as a Hooter's style bar called Boston's.

Very sad news. Landlord Ian McAllister died suddenly late January. He was highly regarded in the industry and is sadly missed. Enterprise Inns have yet to re-open the pub.

First port of call on yesterday`s Coventry crawl, alas boarded up!

Visited on 3rd November 2009. It was a Tuesday and the pub was very quiet at 9pm (4 other drinkers beside myself). Three ales on at the time: Greene King IPA, Young's Special and Fuller's London Pride. Only time for one pint so opted for the IPA which was well kept. Perfectly decent pub, but emptier than I'd expected.

Spats. Wherever if was that you did end up, they have my total sympathy. What an idiot.
spookyhead - 10 Jun 2009 15:23
Not nice. I tried to like but couldn't even bring myself to order a pint at the bar. Left the pub (and in fact coventry) to find somewhere decent to drink

Open pretty late, so a good finishing pub.
I've usually found a very good beer on. Good rapport with the owner. Lovely dog playin around which my mate nearly fell off his chair on to. That kind of place.
Pleasant talkative regulars, sheltered garden. Recommended.

visited on Saturday after a long interval . A good choice of 6 real ales which were in good condition and resonably priced .Live music added to it being a great night out.
covman2003 - 25 May 2008 12:05
Don't get here as often as i'd like but always have a cracking time when i do. Plenty of different ales to try at very reasonable prices. Friendly crowd and a live band on a Saturday evening.
spookyhead - 16 May 2008 21:38
Still Drinking Here,Blacksheep bitter is the regular with six ever changing beers to choose from. Now the smoking ban is in, the garden nearly all taken over for smokers, hope it changes if we get any summer this year!Quality of beer still good, pipes cleaned befor every beer change.Ian the manager DOES drink the beer and can be a little moody but I have always found him friendly.Still allows food to be drought in from the many eating outlets locally.Live music every saturday and sometimes on friday. May not be the most palacious pub, but always a friendly welcome I found.
lotus - 30 Mar 2008 14:32
a cracking little boozer that goes from srength to strength, knowledgeable about their beers and works hard to creat good atmosphere. definately coming back here.
beergent - 12 Oct 2007 08:25
this is THE most overated pub in Coventry. This place has better reviews than the nursery tavern! both are bad, but this place really does stink.

May I add that the barman is an ignorant fool who doesn't drink beer and has a bad attitude. I have had 1great night here, the rest have been woeful.

On the upside there is a decent curry house opposite.
BolshevistBoozehound - 16 Aug 2007 10:26
I go here most weekends, always a good choice of real ales, and a band every saterday. The outside garden area is lovely in the summer.Never any trouble even if it is full on band night.Ian likes to put candles out in the evening.Always a friendly atmosphere.

great choice of real ales

Called in while doing a crawl, and found it a friendly pub. It was quiet due to the time of day but looked a community local. I enjoyed my beer there and it is always nice to see a piano in a pub. One of the locals told me the area was being revitalised and explained how businesses were getting grants to help improve the area.

Visited last night during a GBG-directed crawl around Coventry. Being a Monday night the pub was fairly quiet but not empty. Very pleasant atmosphere, and I could easily have stayed until 12 if I did not have other pubs to try.

All behind the bar afforded me a warm welcome. Wye Valley Golden Ale was on good form, and the landlord was kind enough to serve me a pint of Oakham's Bishops Farewell before it was officialy onstream.

A very pleasant pub, improved under its current management and well worth visiting.
lad_newton - 24 Oct 2006 14:53
Bad part of cov, looked pretty chancy for us from brum, nowhere to park properly, one or two guest ales but pretty basic, not a CAMRA pub for me. to little on offer, and would leave this to the regulars, not worth a visit unless you dont know where the nursrey tavern is. Few seats, looked like someone had stolen the furniture, however pleasent staff and a very fiendly dog who played ball with us diving amongst the garden tables.
crseel - 28 Aug 2006 12:15
went to their first beer festival 9/7/06.great choice of real ale in the garden.most itried were good quality.band in the bar played eric clapton songs and sounded great from the garden.a good night.

I have to say I have spent many a day (and night) in the Beer Engine, and I have never suffered from a rash! maybe gillyweed is allergic to dogs!

I will also say this is one of the few pubs in town where a girl can enter on her own and feel kinda safe - it gets a high rating from me too.
mcnaughty - 28 Nov 2005 14:11
Great place. Its the customers that make this the pub giant that it is. All truely special individuals with a tale to tell. you get a real sence of 'care in the community' here. A band who were innocently sound checking before their performance were mercilessly heckled by a pair of revelers, to inpatient to even wait for the main event. its definately a hands on place where audience participation is encouraged and lunacy is celebrated.
P.S the place could really do with a good scrub, dont go if you are prone to rashes.
gillyweed - 9 Oct 2005 12:34
Hurrah! Great beer and live music! Geoff behind the bars a friendly chap and knows how to pour the excellent hand-pulls the beer engine has.

Needs to be higher in the top 40 so more people know about it, so its a good rating from me!
Scarey_biscuits - 16 Sep 2005 11:56
Hi we shall put the bands up whan we confirm so there may be several addition shortly.
fifiweewee - 19 Jul 2005 19:58
Great news about the website, will the band listings be listed for the month or just week by week?
anonymous - 13 Jul 2005 15:20
Lovely Pub. Recently went back after a short absence. There is Black Sheep as a permanent and four other revolving guest ales well kept, heaven for a real ale fan like myself. Live bands on Saturday night and if you believe the advertising on the wall various other activities during the week. Staff are friendly, attentive and approachable. Good mix of clientele. Go ahead, pay a visit and feel the stress melt away.
BeerHoldTheMan - 19 Apr 2005 18:50
This is a great pub, good staff, great beer (Off the top of my head there are four revolving guests and Black Sheep as a resident and Hoegarden on tap,) and live bands every Saturday night, but these aren't your average city centre bands, the guys the Beer Engine get CAN ACTUALLY PLAY!!! Coupled with the afforementioned beer it's a great place to spend your Saturday night, in fact, if you go there, you'll probably see me there, but don't ask for me 'cause I'll think you're a loon.
gazbert - 19 Feb 2005 18:24
There is going to be an Art Display opening night with a Valentines theme on Friday 11th Feb - should be fun! Also bands are now playing every Saturday night!

mcnaughty - 8 Feb 2005 10:19
The ROOTERS are playing in the Beer Engine 26th March! Hurrah

mcnaughty - 26 Jan 2005 14:23
Can we have a gig guide, this place was the best venue for live rock in Cov, we must have Rooters, Beholder, Pure Insctict, IZZY the Push, Rebellious Jukebox and more back soon, please.
yvonne elliott - 16 Oct 2004 18:10
bands will be playing soon hooray and alcohol hooray it's all good!
sam - 19 Sep 2004 22:57
The SKABILLY REBELS are playing at The Beer Engine Sat Oct 9th, 9pm start, free admission. also there are now 4 Cask Ales on offer Black Sheep and 3 ever changing guest ales, along with bottled Belgian beers, and hoegaarten on tap!!!
Layla - 18 Sep 2004 00:46
A nice pub with a nice atmosphere. Should be really good when there are a few more beers on, (Black Sheep and Pedigree were available at my recent visit)especially the prospect of a belgian beer on draft! Still in the process of refurbishment, but the signs are good. Very clean, took the time to clean my glass thoroughly before giving me my bottle of Judas!!! Well worth visiting.
Andrew - 13 Jul 2004 15:48
Just heard the good news, the beer engine is having a facelift. The former landlord of the whitefriars has taken over and he is retaining his original staff. If the pub is half as good as his previous we should be in for a treat. Not confirmed yet but possibly 6-7 handpulls, belgian bottled and one on tap to boot. A breath of fresh air well done guys!
Barry - 8 Jun 2004 13:20
Hasn't even opened yet, but given the former success of Whitefriars how could you lose. Is going to be the best Pub in Coventry and surely one of the best in the Midlands without fail!
Ted - 8 Jun 2004 11:02
This Pub is new home of Bill and the former staff of Whitefriars Olde Ale House. Opening on Monday 14th June, with a totally rejuvenated interior, a immensely wide variety of cask ales, good food. Definately going to be the best Pub in Coventry without a shadow of a doubt.
NOTHING LIKE IT WAS PREVIOUSLY!
