please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not a bad pub but certainly not a great pub. It's tardis like interior was more impressive than the short stay itself for a quiet pint.

Used to use this pub regularly but never go in now. One reason only. EVERY pint they pull is extremely short measure. This is not just mine. I do mean EVERY pint. It appears to be a deliberate policy. They will usually top up but with bad grace. I am now so fed up with complaining I go elsewhere. I have written a letter of complaint to the brewery to which they didn't bother to reply.

Nice welcome from Barman( Tad I think). Fire and comfort lovely! Beer, not as good as the price tag would imply!! Better Shep's available (Bear, Crown and Anchor, Alma) in my humble opinion. Has the potential to be really good, but to cliquy by far and the general behaviour of some of the so called clientele left a lot to be desired. If people want to shout and swear like they are at a football match.......GO TO A FOOTBALL MATCH.

Smashing place. Great fire and good food. 4 Sheps Ale's on offer!!

I had the burger, Mrs S had the ploughman's, both of which were very good. The ale was well kept - Samuel Adams Blonde Ambition (brewed by Sheps) and the service unobtrusive but efficient.

I had a large family lunch here last month, and both the food and the service was outstanding. There's no need for me to grumble about their only being Shepherd Neame beer on offer, as it's my choice of beer anyway. I suggest anyone wishing to avoid Shepherd Neame should probably not drink in Faversham town centre...

The food was of an extremely high standard, and the manager was unfailing in his attention and standard of service.

Well done.

Stayed here for one night's B&B, in connection with SN brewery tour. Accommodation comfortable and roomy. Breakfast very good - I liked the smoked haddock/poached eggs alternative to full English. All staff were very polite and friendly. Drink prices were a little on the high side. Nice traditional bar and restaurant. Would use again.

It's interesting that short stay visitors seem far more impressed by this pub than many local contributors. I believe this is because regulars require more of a pub than polite, efficient staff and reasonable decor. It's a shame really, this pub has everthing going for it but still lacks that essential character that defines a popular local.

Reading through the various comments on Faversham pubs, it appears that many are from Kentish locals who have a jaded palate from over-exposure to Shep's beer. Those of us from foreign parts (Surrey) can perhaps be more objective about what is usually a perfectly good pint.
Given that the Sun is Shep's flagship pub, the beer choice had little opportunity to surprise. However, it was pleasing to see that Late Red has ceased to be purely an autumnal beer and far from hibernating, seems now to be surviving through to spring.
Apart from the beer, the rooms are perfectly good and clean, the breakfast is splendid and the staff friendly and helpful enough - can recommend as a place to stay.

Always good to sit in front of a roaring fire. Food is very good.
Shame about the toilets being outside and bloody freezing.
Would be good if there was some background music on occasions, it can feel a bit void of atmosphere.

Great value and an enjoyable place to stay. My wife and I arrived mid afternoon for an overnight stay. We were very warmly welcomed and even though the kitchen had closed they were still able to make us sandwiches.

I found all the hand pumped beers in excellent condition, all were very drinkable. That evening in the restaurant we found an interesting menu and dinner was very good. I have stayed in quite a few "Sheps" pubs and the Sun is definitely top of the list.

We, and others, stayed the night at the Sun Inn last Saturday night as our daughter got married in the Shepherd Neame Brewery during the afternoon. We only visited the bar for a short while but found the staff efficient and very friendly. Our friends had eaten the evening before and reported the food being excellent. We'll have to return and see what the place is like during the evening but the room was excellent.

Great pub, great beer garden, great beers.

Average at best, staff polite though which is a bonus these days.

A thriving establishment that serves well-kept cask ale and hearty food in generous helpings. They also seem to be equally generous in kitchen opening hours; grub was being brought forth as late as 3:30 on my last appearance.
During a weekday afternoon it has a pleasant buzz of custom and a welcoming atmosphere. It isn't doing anything out of the ordinary and on paper the Sun is something of an average outlet, yet it does have a certain something which to my mind at least sets it apart from some of its more pedestrian counterparts. Perhaps it is the general pleasantness one feels when crawling around the charming streets of Faversham? In any case, I would commend this pub for its indoor cosiness in Winter, and its pleasant garden in Summer.

Enjoyable pub and friendly atmosphere excellent beer too

Enjoyable environment as always but the prices are a tad high even for a sheps pub.
Masterbrew not bad, but not superb and not really worth the high price demanded from this cosy little boozer

Attractive looking weather-boarded Sheps pub in the centre of Faversham, down the pedestrianised West Street in the conservation area of town. It features beams, wood pannelling and a fine inglenook fireplace.

There's a rather upmarket ambience to the place, largely brought about by the absence of any TV's and a clear emphasis on food.

The restaurant area on the right looks like an extension to the original building. There's 9 rooms for accommodation, but this is a pub with rooms, rather than a hotel with a bar if you get my drift.

Unfortunately, my pint was served considerably short - the head was so large, it would probably have even been below the line of a lined glass. Having waited unsuccessfully to see if my pint would be topped up without asking, I was then subject to the occasional suspicious and disapproving looks from the Duty Manager after his staff had been asked to fill my glass ( which they did with good grace, incidentally )

The beer was on form and I quite liked the pub as a pub, but it does leave a nasty taste in the mouth when you get served short measure - and this was the shortest pint that I've been served in a long while.

Currently in one of its periodic revivals - now has converted the adjacent property as a small hotel, and added a restaurant. The beer is well-kept Shepherd-Neame standard, but the restaurant food is now quite spectacular - I just had a meal with excellent smoked duck with poached egg & caramelised walnut starter, lamb cooked 3 ways main course (shepherds pie, deep fried, & roast), and chocolate fondue with fresh strawberries & marshmallows for sweet - with a nice bottle of wine - 28 each including tip. All was excellent, including service. This was mid-week - I haven't eaten there at the weekend, but I'll definitely be going again :-)

Overpriced flat beer, if this is Shepherd Neames flagship pub in thier own town it may not be worth visiting any other, had to wait ages to be served while bar staff chatted to their mates then had to return first pint as cleaning fluid was still present, tried a bottle of "finger" as nothing else was on offer. a real let down.
Nice pub,nice location,garden lovely,needs better manager,cellar man and staff.
CAMRAMAN1 - 23 Aug 2008 19:39
Smart, old and spacious; decent Master Brew. Hard to fault except Children not allowed in during evening food session.
mtaylor40 - 9 Feb 2008 01:41
Bit pricey as with most Shep pubs but serves a good pint of Masterbrew and you've got to love that open fireplace
cufc4 - 3 Feb 2008 20:58
Had a quick half on my way to the Shep Neame AGM.Friendly service and decent beer maybe they knew I was coming!

Always used to be my old haunt. Good pub for meeting friends in. Or good midweek when its not too busy and can chat to friends not have to shout. I used to like sitting in front of the fireplace at the front, have now changed to other pubs, but is a great building in a easy to find area.
indycant - 11 Oct 2006 01:00
Typical managed house with staff that are full of their own (imagined) self-importance, when you do manage to get served the Beer is generally bland.
As the Shep Neame flag ship pub a short walk from the brewery which should be the dogs bs it is not only expensive but also very disappointing.
For good beer you are better off going to either the Bear the Market Inn or the Mechanics for food try the Bear or really well presented Mexican try the Albion.

Stopped here for lunch a couple of months ago. An excellent all round pub. Fantastic pint of Spitfire, and possibly the best ploughman's I've ever had. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

A Shepherd Neame pub in the brewery's home town. The building dates from the last year of Richard the Lionheart's crusades, and is known to have been an Inn since 1608. There is a list of landlords since that time on the wall inside. This used to be my favourite Faversham pub, and - in fact - the model for my perfect pub. My favourite room was the wood paneled raised area on the right of the main entrance. This has a huge fire place. It used to be a great place to sit and relax, have a long conversation, or play a game or two of chess.

But the pub has become a victim of its popularity. Over the years it has become more and more crowded, and food has become more and more important. The expansion into a hotel restaurant, especially creating a passageway through the atmospheric wood paneled room, has rather reduced the character of the place.

Even though just slightly away from the market centre my loyalty has shifted to The Anchor at the end of Abbey Street.

Stayed here recently and rooms very good and staff kept them clean on a daily basis. Defintely worth staying here if you're making a short visit.

As for the pub, excellent beer (though in Faversham that's not a surprise). Though food nothing special. Very busy and good atmosphere.
Darren_in_the_City - 2 Oct 2005 17:09
Since the refit at the end of 2003, I have to say I find that the atmosphere has left the building. It's still basically the same structure (but with a passage to the hotel next door knocked through next to the ancient inglenook fireplace). Now it's part of the hotel and restaurant, it's less cosy and welcoming but a lot busier, with guests with luggage constantly trampling through.

I've switched to the Bear Inn, nearby.

This has been 1 of my favourite pubs, out of the 1000`s I`ve visited....Old pub,(usually)good beer, great atmosphere, large fire with the hops hanging all around it in early september..with a number of nice, quaint(but inferior)pubs nearby...Worth a stop off back from Canterbury.

Beautiful late 14th or early 15th century Shepherd Neame pub. Walking distance of brewery, town centre & station. Beer is good, excellent bar snacks & meals. Recently extended with 8 en-suite bedrooms, beer garden and restaurant.

A really good Shephard Neame pub - really good atmosphere, great food, and easy to get to...
Oh, and the beers good too!
