user reviews of the Antelope, High Wycombe

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Antelope’s bouncers are thugs. A member of the pubic was assaulted by two of The Antelope’s bouncers while walking past.

A very strange place indeed. 10pm on a Tuesday and there is loud music. Is it a disco? Is it Karaoke? Is it some sort of bastard hybrid of the two. I am still not sure.

What I am sure is there were youngsters singing and oldsters dancing. It was always going to end in tears. The oldster dropped his pint in a most spectacular fashion.

One of those places that Sky make documentaries about.

do NOT go into the Antelope bar. According to this bar its now apparently an offense to say "excuse me" to a bar woman, in order to gan her attention. It is also an offense to try and defend someone who does this and it WILL end in you not only getting thrown out, but being done so violently and inappropriately after saying that you will leave of your own accord.
My suggestion - DO NOT GO HERE. The bar staff I encountered was in a bad mood and took it out on each and every customer, this lead to her complaining about paying customers for no verified reason and lead to people being thrown out *in my opinion* in a rough and inappropriate way

Very rough & ready pub with large beer garden which is certaintly less oppressive than the inside. We tried the only real ale; the Courage Best & it was so-so. Slightly cloudy with a not overly pleasant taste - I would say it was served a bit too soon. Will only come back if part of a crawl, I had heard real ale is not their strong point.

I've re-visited this place a few times over the past year. Mostly around 8pm on a weekend when the place is still quite quiet and we can get a seat in the beer garden. The problem with this place as I said a few years ago - it needs a big refurb. When you walk in you are met with the overbearing smell of stale lager, urine and a general musky smell. The place is looking very sorry for itself and quite drab and even the beer garden could do with a spruce up now. The 'locals' are usually to be found at the bar stinking the place out even more, staring at you and sizing you up should you dare stand in their spot at the bar. It fills up with chavs and coke heads after around 10pm and the dancefloor that used to play some really good alternative/indie music now pumps out generic dance and R&B. In summary, go for a pint in the beer garden, then leave. There are better places around.

Yeah not as good as it was about 5/6 years back. Then it was a good boozer with a young bohemian atmosphere and some great beer(Rebellion?).Now no ales.Pretty drab and boring and not worth visiting. It needs a change of management to compete with Wycombe's best.

I hadn't been into The Antelope for some years and on my last visit it sold Rebellion beer and was quite pleasant. I went in again yesterday and was so disappointed. This is probably Wycombe's only pub that bears any resemblance to a proper genuine unaltered classic. Sadly it isn't - it has been knocked about a bit and to me has lost it's charm. There was no real ale available and some of the customers did not enhance the surroundings. Such a shame as this should be a little gem offering some good cask beers; food and a pleasant atmosphere - especially considering its poisiton in town. At least the open fire was lit !!

Wow ! Now my reviews sometimes have a habit of being overly long and detailed. But I have to take my hat off to adams1104 below.
What a piece of work !
And as it is the only review ever posted and I cannot believe this is the only pub they have visited, I can only assume that the energy taken to complete this masterpiece led to a mild trauma caused by exhaustion.
What is there to possibly add, with the exception that its location in Church Square makes it a good , more traditional option to the chain pubs and bars on the High Street.
Oh, and being a pub, it does serve beer, but in keeping with all the other reviewers, who seem to have a pact to completely ignore the main premise behind B.I.T.E, I also am not going to tell you what it is and what the qualitys like. You will just have to visit and find out for yourself.

Reading the past reviews for the lope listed here, over the last 6 years, a lot has changed. I've been going since i was about 16, almost 8 years now and over time it has indeed changed. Not, fortunately, have the clientle. The best thing i've experienced in my years of going to the lope is the amount of faces you see week in and week out. I've met a lot of people over the years who will remain memories for a life time. A completely diverse mix of people from rockers to chavs (the good, funny kind), emos to students. No other pub in town offers this mix.
The music is varied, from hard rock to some old skool drum n bass land everything inbetween. Karaoke held on...(guesses recollection...).. Mon?,day?? and occasional drinks promotions make for a good night out even with a small group.

In my eyes, the best thing about the pub now is the expansive covered garden area provided. approx. 1000sq feet(my estimations are terrible, but big) garden with about half of it covered by good quality parasols donned with equally good quality heaters. This means, any time of year, rain or shine, you're sure of a good place to have a bit of a cheeky smoke and a bubble (bubble-it's been said, deal with it). Arriving late can often mean no available seats under the covers, but adequate levels of secondary benches are provided. Busier nights see all tables full and a large congregation of people mass in the center creating quite a party atmosphere. Again, on busier nights, an outdoor bar is opened which serves a variety of bottles and a few other beverages. Two horrifically disgusting porta-loos skirt the edge of the garden as to allow people to piddle without crossing the dancefloor which is inside.. the less said about them two the better. Also, a 'pool' table is available at a pound a go. Not really worth it if you ask me. The table is about as flat as pam anderson and the cues often have had their tips busted. If there is chalk, it's often not any use without a serviceable cue to use it on. However, like most tables in pubs, chalk is often moved on elsewhere. i've got a photo on my phone of the table's side where the staff had written, "please do not steal the chalk", and where someone underneath has written "why not?".. in chalk. made me chuckle.
As for the inside, this is where the lope has let itself down recently. Poorly furnished and lit, the main bar section is often crowded to the point entrances and exits are obscured, drink handling mishaps are a common occurrence as some impatient knobs (ie me and anyone else in the queue) races for the spot you've just been dispensed your drink from. On week nights, the bar can often be found propped up by a collection of alcohol drenched regulars, who you imagine would have some interesting stories to tell... they do not. For the weekends, a secondary bar is opened inside which offers almost the same range of drinks that the primary bar does, and more than the exterior bar. Prices at each of the bars are reasonable at best, their trademark 'shark' being one of the better deals. Double vodka and this shark/redbull equivalent, 3. Which aint amazing but beats some other places - could do with taller glasses and the option to keep the rest of the can. think they get two out of one there.
Other than the outside and the 'bar-room' there are two other notable features, one being the en-suite dancefloor, which i touched on earlier. Often the dancefloor can be great, eclectic mix of tunes, meaning all 'types' of people can join the fun. Occasionally during more mainstream sessions, the floor can get a little crowded due to its size. I reckon, possibly the DJs play a wide range of music so ppl can dance in like shifts. Start off with a bit of Rock, keep the DnB fanboys at bay, allow the rockers to rock out.. then flip, pow, (un)original nutter plays and the chavs flock like birds to the dancefloor, which by now is being vacated by punks. That type of thing happens about 3 or 4 times a night, the mix of genres they play is probably the best thing the dj's got. the variety within those genres are severely lacking however. same tunes, different order i'm afraid. The en-suite element of this dancefloor soon shows itself in either a Final Destination-esque line of suspicious liquid seeping out of the doorway of the mens, which is no more than an arms length from the dancefloor. That or the birds loo will have a queue of lovelies hanging outside. Not a plus-point really, no good chatting up a bird if she's busting for a pee. (atleast that's the excuse i always get!!! *runs off crying*) :P
The last area of the pub is what i've always referred to as the grandads inglenook. With a second point of delivery to the main bar (thinner, about 2/3 customers wide), this area acts as a more relaxed and calm place to be. Customers in this 'nook' should really use this bar-estuary unless severely long queues have gathered both sides. Often the dilemma of standing at the main bar, is that u can see right across to this secondary bar by the nook and it can be ever so tempting to nip round, hoping to shave off a few ply of customers.
Only a few other minor issues. Occasionally after around 12, you will need to pay anything from 2-4 to get in, this is dependent on it being busy i believe. Doormen are pretty reliable, though a little mob-style. Have seen them with the old-bald guy one time beating the crap outta this one punter, then taking them off the premises and round make of the church to continue beating him up. pretty harsh. Just glad that didn't happen the time i bolted the fence when i was 16. got in, but clothes were covered in that blackstuff, plus tore ma jeans. Oh well, got in.

This pub used to be so great, but what happened to it? I was in over the weekend and it was dier! Rubbish music, poor barstaff who al look like they are 15, and generally dirty and grotty pub! Makes me sad that a pub that used to be so great is now a down trodden boozer. The only thing keeping this place alive are the regulars who have been going there since THEY were 15!

Poor.

The Antelope is a great pub with the best atmosphere in Wycombe, it's open until 2am on Firday's and Saturday's so doesn't start filling up until about 10-11pm those nights. Most people pop into the nearby Weatherspoons for a few cheap swift ones before moving on to the Antelope.

The bouncers are very friendly, welcoming and fair. If you break the rules you are asked to leave, I've never seen them have to resort to violence. There is no real dress code in place, no tracksuit bottoms and no hats in the evenings seems to be the only regulations.

There is a small dancefloor but if you are away from it you can still hear the music but not loudly so you can just talk at normal volume.

The crowd that turn up are the main reason to go, just a chilled out mix of friendly people. I don't think I've ever been to the Antelope and not struck up conversation with a stranger and as most people return to the Antelope over time you make new friends there.

Basically it's the only reason to go out in Wycombe.

In need of a major refurb. Gone downhill big time since the old landlord left. Not my watering hole anymore.
mikeyr1234 - 21 Apr 2007 01:42
Nice pub, nice staff. Busy at weekends. Has a young audience.

Overall friendly busy pub - probably the busiest in Wycombe.

Bouncers helpful - unless you break the rules then you are asked to leave. Just the way it should be.

Management also helpful - and take people's suggestions.

THE ANTELOPE SEEMS TO HAVE LOST ITS SPARKLE IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS,MUSIC HAS CHANGED,SO HAS THE ATMOSPHERE.THE BAR STAFF DONT SEEM AS FRIENDLY,AND THE WHOLE PLACE LOOKS LIKE IT NEEDS A GOOD FACE LIFT
anonymous - 10 Apr 2006 14:54
Great night out especially on Saturday nights, music seems to have changed in last couple of months(much better!) . Beer garden is fantastic, Toiltes are a bit of an issue - not enough of them. Thursday`s Student night is great - great offers on the drinks.
Try it!!!!!!!!! You won`t be disappointed
PartyPerson - 5 Oct 2005 00:35
music students rock. and so does the antelope. great pub, great music, nice place for alternative people to go and chill. cheap drinks, great dance floor. met many a boyfriend here, and made lots of great friends!
green18 - 1 Aug 2005 18:15
it's good during the day and some weekday evenings on fridays and saturdays it becomes over run by pretentious music and design students who give the rest of us a bad name.

A very homely place to be, very relaxing and makes you feel comfortable. They've recently refurbished it and installed a new bar inside. I was a bit sceptic at first about the new extension and dancefloor, but i must admit it now caters for both the young and the old. It is under new Scotish management which is evident within its quiz night which features mostly questions on Scotish landmarks and heritage, easy pickings for the scots amongst you. Friendly staff and bouncers make you feel welcome. The new managent have even fitted a new garden feature and also a beer tent outside for nice days. Prices are reasonable, but there are cheaper places to drink. Student discount help draw in younger crowds, though there are still the obligitry bar flies which are recognisable a mile away.

All on All, 8 on 10. - Good Stuff.

By far the best pub in Wycombe, especially now its been sorted out inside. Love it!
anonymous - 2 Jun 2004 17:25
This pub will ALWAYS be the best in town. ecletic mix of characters, friendly, trouble free and the bouncers at weekends actually converse with you and smile. :)

the extension was a bit of a worry, but it hasn't really altered the crowd or atmosphere. horrible colour paint though !!

bit worried about the big scree tv as well... i hope it's not gonna be a football haunt :(

courage best and brakspear @ 1.60 a pint... not the greatest of Ale but cheap and kept well... (but of course the Belle Vue is THE BEST for ALE in town ;)
Alan - 7 May 2004 17:47
Went in there over the Easter weekend - and it's got bigger! How'd they do that without me noticing?! Hopefully might be a bit quicker getting served in the busy summer evenings with the extra bar - looks quite nice. Same old problems with the bogs though - despite them being brand new ones!
gilesd - 14 Apr 2004 11:33
What the hell has happened to MY Antelope?! Haven't been in there for a few months (away at Uni) and went in there last night to see a new paint job and an EXSTENSION!!

I personally believe that it's ruined the atmosphere totally... I hate it!

Oh well, suppose I will have to wait and see what it is like when the refurbishment is fully finished...
Lee - 28 Mar 2004 10:03
Interesting cross-section of students and strange old men inhabit this pub
Andy - 28 Mar 2004 09:15
Great discounts for students- the biggest variety of people I've ever seen in a pub- you find everyone here! The bar staff are great, incredibly friendly, and you always make a couple of new friends here.
anonymous - 25 Mar 2004 12:23

I love the antelope to bits, however, the music must be altered. the resident dj buys his records from woolworths I think.
apart from that good crowd.
chris - 18 Dec 2003 10:05
Open until 2 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays! If you hate dressing out to go out at a weekend then the Antelope is for you! The most diverse collection of people known to man!!
noeth - 9 Dec 2003 15:18
This pub is tiny and used to be full of rockers.. is it still? Not been here since late 90's. Great hangout I the summer as the garden is huge.

Just behind old Market Hall, Below the Church. I visited on a Sunday on thye way to watch London Wasps. Old pub with many original bits still there (pillars, bits of open brickwork, open fireplace, regulars etc). Cheap beer Sunday lunchtime (1,50 a pint) - normally including beer from nearby Rebellion Brewery. Discounts for students 7 days a week. Rock night on Tuesdays.
