If you want to pay big money for real ales, then this is the place to come!
And they were only average. One of the most expensive pubs around, a tourist trap, what do you expect?
noggin46 - 6 Jan 2012 21:50
i notice people keep mentioning the wait at this lovely pub, but what do they expect in the height of summer at a very popular venue and at least they tell you when there is a lengthy tailback which is more than most pubs do.
I have never found the staff unfreindly but obviously when customers are queuing out of the door they don't have much time to chat and as the bar serving area is very small there is naturally a limit on the number of hands they can have at the pumps.
I sometimes telephone to check what ales are on and the number is 01723 500449 so i don't know where that phone number in the details above has come from.

This pub should be avoided like the plague. I took my wife and 4 year old daughter in on Sunday 4th September for a bite to eat and a pint and the place was filthy. When we asked the staff to kindly wipe our table (which had dog hairs on it) they looked surprised as if we were asking for something unattainable. The food was over priced, tasteless and little of it. We ordered some home made fries for 1.95 and they arrived in a tiny plastic chip tray, half full. My wife was half way through her cup of tea when she discovered somebody else's lipstick all around her cup. When I took it back to the bar they simply replaced it without a sorry, explanation or reassurances it was a one off. The staff were indifferent, surly and it ruined what had been up until that point a lovely day. Filthy pub, tasteless food that takes up to 45 minutes to arrive, indifferent staff - HORRIBLE PLACE.

Dropped in there earlier today, had a nice pint of Wold Top North Bay - a tad expensive at 3 but heh-ho! A lady ordered a Bacon Banjo whilst I was waiting for my pint only to be told there would be an half an hour wait. Even I could make one quicker than that!!!

Called in last week and was very impress with the new floor what a lovely job the food was great and staff very friendly beer prices are average but you do get the best choice of real ail around you can see that the landlord loves his pub with the amount of work he has done over the last 2 or 3 years would love to see a full Sunday lunch on the menu with mash potatoes. But we cant have every thing can we. Thanks to you all at old scalby mills

having called into this pub last week i can honestly say i was not impressed . Myself my partner and four children were sat at a table only meant to sit four people and then after placing our order and paying for it we were informed it would be at least 45 minutes wait for food so as we had already paid we waited. As we waited 2 other tables who arrived after us were served and appologised to for their wait our food arrived minus the appology to be rather unimpressed as in yorkshire we picked the traditional yorkshire pudding to recieve frozen yorkshires frozen roast potatos and frozen meat just reheated for what we recieved i thought it was over priced and not very tasty at all the tables were sticky and the staff rather unpleasant so i will definately not be going back and it is a shame as scarborough is looking rather nice and the pub has a lovely location regards C Erskine

5 stars from the council does not mean the food is good only that the management are doing a good job and the kitchens kept clean.

wow ; great views great beer great food and friendly staff. this was my 3rd visit to the scalby mills and it has impressed on each occasion.on my last ,on new years day me and my partner dodged the waves on a walk from the north bay car park along the prom for lunch.first a few beers whilst taking in the view over north bay to the imposing castle.brews from copper dragon, wold top, and captain cook, whose endeavour 4.3% was pick of the day. i ordered fish and chips, and my partner a steak sandwich. the fish was more like a whale. so we left full up and ready for the walk back.and looking foreward to my next visit ps this establishment hasnt got to be confused with the dreadfull scalby manor nearby..

Just visited this pub, and whilst I found the views beautiful, thats where it ended. The pub is disgracfully dirty. I have never used pub toilets before where I have had to hold my breath. They were discusting. As I looked around the lounge was in the same filthy state. Tables were filthy, the smell appalling and a big black greasy stain that emerged from the bar accross the lounge carpet. The staff - two young girls, whilst polite enough were clueless. No ice available (for the second night I was told) and serving people food with their hair all ov er the place. Their was a German family who were there and I honestly felt quite ashamed. I quietly hoped they didnt think this a typical English - Yorkshire Pub. Sorry to rant on but I feel it such a shame to see such potential in a place sliding to such low levels. I appreciate the Pub industry has been 'hit hard' over recent years, but this was a lack of basic hygene and cleanliness which costs a bit of hot water, soap and elbow grease and no more.

Walked from the Spa Centre all the way around the seafront to build up an appetite (& a thirst) for this place, one of my favourites in Scarborough it never fails to hit the spot.

Ale around the 2.70-3.00 mark, consistently well kept, & a couple from Yorkshire breweries with Copper Dragons Black Gold from Skipton always on when I visit, the luck of the mild drinker!

Food is good value with the chicken & steak pies particulary well filled, freshly cooked, we four had a 25 min wait with dining area 25% full, proper chips too!

If you eat inside you have the bonus of the best views & a respite from inclement weather, highchairs available, they advertise themselves as"sprog & dog" friendly.

Outside there are more benches on a lower level behind pub.

They have added a smokers roof to the right of the entrance & a small conservatory to the left since my last visit, as sign of its increasing popularity.

Sea Life Centre & minature railway are just across the road, look out for the white wigwams.

For those who don't fancy the 3.5 mile stroll we did, the No. 3A EYMS (Scarborough & District) has its terminus right outside, no Sunday service but 25 mins to the hour until early evening Monday to Saturday 1.45 single journey.

I know its a cliche, but who wouldn't want a boozer like this around the corner from them?

This pub is in a great location with a good range of beers, though rather pricey.
Unfortunately the tables are very dirty and never cleaned by staff. If you put your elbows on the tables chances are you will stick to it! Still OK to drink in but eat there at your peril.

Excellent pub but it is a bit of a trek from the town centre. Five or six ales on, friendly barmaid.
Killian42 - 2 May 2010 16:32
A bit of a trek on a rainy day, but well worth the effort. Decent ales in pleasant surroundings and was deservedly popular, despite the weather

A pub in a lovely location that tries to be many things to many people. Perhaps too many.

There's ale available - a decent range and in good condition. There's food too - a whole half the pub (the best bit too with the views I might add) which means the drinkers are often rather squashed in the rest - I was one of those unfortunates.

Good to see the place is dog-friendly, I like well-behaved dogs in pubs although surprised this squares with the food provision (doesn't bother me but I suspect it might others). However, in our squished part of the pub, the dogs added a further obstacle to navigate.

I quite liked the place and it's worth a walk along the sands for but something didn't quite work for me in terms of wanting to return in a hurry. Perhaps best sampled on the very quiet days as it is currently a victim of it's own success.

Not bad. Good variety of beers well kept. A place to sit outside on a summers day. A little bit too foody orientated for my liking.

Thuoght it might be a brewers tudor tourist trap..wrong tried three beers on a very hot day (and by try i mean pints) all in tip top condition despite most others drinking lager/pop also a nice beef sandwich..lovely and highly recommended (pub/beer and food!).

Nice cosy pub with great sea views of Scarborough North Bay. The beer was good and the food filling.

Walked along the front to this pub and arrived like a drowned rat in a massive downpour. Enjoyed good real ale and black pudding a friendly local had put on the bar while my coat dried off in front of the fire.

Excellent pub which caters for all- our small children were made welcome, good local beers were also on offer.. Very handy for both the sea-life centre and clifftop walks!
