Waggon and Horses, Oldbury

Sadly this place has been closed for the last couple of months or so, it couldn't compete, or didn't want to compete, with The Court of Requests, the two year old 'Spoons next door, big shame really because the Waggons interior is pretty spectacular and the cask ale range was the best for miles around in it's hetday, we often used to use the upstairs function room on our return from the Cheltenham Festival, will it ever reopen? that's for Brains Brewery to answer.

The Hamstead, Hamstead

Went for lunch here today for the first time in a couple of years, we were there just before midday and a few folk like us were waiting for it to open, within ten minutes the lounge was half full, you can see why it's so popular when the meals appear, they are a decent plateful so go hungry, a selection of seven or eight main meals are available at two for £9.
Sadly things were not so bright on the ale front, two handpumps, both in use on my previous visit but only one this time, it was Hobgoblin which seems to get everywhere these days but it was in decent nick, the rest was your usual keg fare, we had two Hobgoblins & two J20s which came to £9.80.
Overall a solid boozer, big menu with portions to match.
8/10
