user reviews of the Standard, Brighton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Very slightly more comfortable and clean and expensive than the wetherspoons across the road. There is no reason to ever go here.

I've found the staff here to be exceptionally friendly and the Harveys is good. Bit more of a sports bar but definitely worth a look.

I love going to this pub as it plays good music and the drinks are a reasonable price. I don't have a shaved head and I certainly don't dress like a chav. I have also recently met the new owner of the standard and he has just spent 1m on making it look more presentable, so for the person that is SO closed minded, wake up and take a look around you, not all people are stereotypes and if you think that, then I wonder if you're actually a shaven headed chav yourself.

Since the new management took over, this place has kinda improved.
nice decor, loads of sofas, and 2 cocktails or 3 shots for 5.50. Not bad all in all. The cocktails and shots are all made infront of you and genrally presented really well.
i like the place, it has bouncers, but so does every other pub on the street.
Just a couple of things - although they do have a massive beer garden, its a bit soulless. Just loads of rows of picnic benches. And the toilets are scummy.
Oh, and they ran out of Archers last thursday. not good, as half the cocktails need it.

I would like to post a comment in defence of the standard. Since the new manager took over last year I feel that the venue & clientel have improved a great deal. There is a much stricter door policy and as for the earlier comment somebody made about needing bouncers, I think they would find that the majority of city centre pubs have bouncers.
Granted West street can be quite boisterous of an evening but when there are lots of pubs there are generally lots of drunk people acting about.
As for the comment about shaved heads and chavs, this is just a small minded person stereotyping people through their haircut and choice of clothing. I personally know a number of respected police officers with shaved heads, I wonder which stereotype box we should put them in.

Anyway back to the pub, it's a nice bar, with contempory decor and friendly staff. So, If you're looking for a lively night out in Brighton, then this is a place to call at. I have noticed that the door staff are very vigilant and they have a good presence to put any would-be trouble makers off.
Next time you call in have a pint for me, Cheers!

It says a lot when this pub was closed by the Police for a week-end under their new licencing powers!

I even saw a bouncer turn the landlord and his staff away from a club one night.

The Standard serves a pupose - it keeps the scum away from the rest of Brighton and the management and staff have to be congratulated on this amazing feat. Thank You. x

Chav central. This is why I love West St - it keeps all the undesirables in one place & leaves the rest of Brighton & Hove to the rest of us.
I feel sorry for the tourists who leave with the impression that this is the real Brighton...

Popped into this place on the off chance of trying to find a civilised pub on west street. Can any one guess what I found?...thats right, another chav/sports bar. This place does not have the right to be called a pub. I think its in competition with Yates or Wetherspoons to be the most scummy pub in Brighton. It has the usual suspects;
1. Shaved Headed Chavs.
2. Sport on 100 TVs.
3. Doorman [Very Bad Sign]
4. More Chavs.
5. Barstaff who have walkie talkies and find it an effort to serve a pint.

Avoid.

Have also been in this pit on a Tuesday.
The DJ is tone deaf and the bar staff look like they are extras from a Michael Jackson video.
rupert.the.jumper - 15 Jan 2006 01:01
I've been in here once, about two tuesdays ago and i congratulated the manager on employing disabled people in his bar, afterall, with the racket that the *dj* was making he had to be deaf.

don't know what Blank182 is on about, i've been in there on a tuesday never again!!! will stick to what i know. Dj's are supposed to create a good atmosphereHe didn't!! Looked like he didn't want to be there. I have friends that are Dj's who are twice the Dj he is yet can't find work. Hey maybe you are the Dj blank 182 singing your praise's. You say the Dj is sexy then say how nice the girls are!! Make your mind up Gay or straight??? LOL Sliped up there i take it!!
Whateva_182 - 26 Dec 2005 08:56
Everytime I go in there I have a top night. Tuesday nights have been the best so far. cheap drinks for us students and a very sexy DJ. Bar staff are very kind and also the management.

They now have very nice girls outside which is a pleasure to see. Wet T-Shirts are a good night as well. Make sure you go down there. Even if it's to see the Tuesday night DJ.

blank183 - 20 Dec 2005 16:31
awsome place .. had a great night out on wet t shirt comp night ...dunno what the wizard is on about but he/she is obviously happier in a old mans pub serving ale ... his loss ..lol... get a life .
anonymous - 14 Dec 2005 17:13
Horrible Place this one. Has the usual sport on the big screen and tribes of "what ya looking at" chavs. It had no atmosphere and seemed very gloomy. Also why bar staff need to walk around with walkie talkies is beyond me. So to sum up....avoid.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a quiz merchant, a big event is taking place here on Saturday 19th November.

I won't break protocol by advertising another website here, but if you want to know more you can always send me a private message for further info.

My rating, btw, is based on past visits. About the only pub on West Street that is actually worth visting during the day (can't comment on night time trade as I avoid the area like the plague).

V. friendly staff, well kept drink, good food.

josh - 8 Dec 2003 16:21
good fun down stairs (clubbing area) and plenty of tunes upstairs (even if the mixing isn't great). one draw back is the 1 am close...the bus doesnt leave until half 2 and there are mirrors downstairs in the club - the last thing i want to see when i am drunk and dancing is my refelction ;)

The Standard is a large venue, with a massive beer garden, and private night club.

The club, Garden and Lounge areas are all available for private functions.

The staff are all friendly and skilled, and it's a must for locals and visitors alike!!

The Standard also benefits from a late license.
