Very slightly more comfortable and clean and expensive than the wetherspoons across the road. There is no reason to ever go here.

I've found the staff here to be exceptionally friendly and the Harveys is good. Bit more of a sports bar but definitely worth a look.

I love going to this pub as it plays good music and the drinks are a reasonable price. I don't have a shaved head and I certainly don't dress like a chav. I have also recently met the new owner of the standard and he has just spent 1m on making it look more presentable, so for the person that is SO closed minded, wake up and take a look around you, not all people are stereotypes and if you think that, then I wonder if you're actually a shaven headed chav yourself.

Since the new management took over, this place has kinda improved.
nice decor, loads of sofas, and 2 cocktails or 3 shots for 5.50. Not bad all in all. The cocktails and shots are all made infront of you and genrally presented really well.
i like the place, it has bouncers, but so does every other pub on the street.
Just a couple of things - although they do have a massive beer garden, its a bit soulless. Just loads of rows of picnic benches. And the toilets are scummy.
Oh, and they ran out of Archers last thursday. not good, as half the cocktails need it.

I would like to post a comment in defence of the standard. Since the new manager took over last year I feel that the venue & clientel have improved a great deal. There is a much stricter door policy and as for the earlier comment somebody made about needing bouncers, I think they would find that the majority of city centre pubs have bouncers.
Granted West street can be quite boisterous of an evening but when there are lots of pubs there are generally lots of drunk people acting about.
As for the comment about shaved heads and chavs, this is just a small minded person stereotyping people through their haircut and choice of clothing. I personally know a number of respected police officers with shaved heads, I wonder which stereotype box we should put them in.

Anyway back to the pub, it's a nice bar, with contempory decor and friendly staff. So, If you're looking for a lively night out in Brighton, then this is a place to call at. I have noticed that the door staff are very vigilant and they have a good presence to put any would-be trouble makers off.
Next time you call in have a pint for me, Cheers!
